Cortical Structure In Nodes Of The Default Mode Network Estimates General Intelligence, Abhinav Yadav, Archana Purushotham May 2025

Cortical Structure In Nodes Of The Default Mode Network Estimates General Intelligence, Abhinav Yadav, Archana Purushotham

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Introduction: A growing number of studies implicate functional brain networks in intelligence, but it is unclear if network nodal structure relates to intelligence.

Methods: Using MRI, we studied the relationship of the general intelligence factor (g) with cortical thickness (CT), local gyrification index (LGI), and voxel-based morphometry in the nodes of the default mode network (DMN) and task-positive network (TPN) in a cohort of 44 young, healthy adults. Employing a novel strategy, we performed repeated analyses with multiple sets of g estimates to remove false positives.

Results: CT and LGI in medial and temporal nodes of the DMN were reliably …

Leptomeningeal metastases are the major source of morbidity and mortality for patients with medulloblastoma. The biology of the leptomeningeal metastases and the local tumour microenvironment are poorly characterized. Here we show that metastasis-associated meningeal fibroblasts (MB-MAFs) are transcriptionally distinct and signal extensively to tumour cells and the tumour microenvironment. Metastatic cells secrete platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) ligands into the local microenvironment to chemotactically recruit meningeal fibroblasts. Meningeal fibroblasts are reprogrammed to become MB-MAFs, expressing distinct transcriptomes and secretomes, including bone morphogenetic proteins. Active bone morphogenetic protein signalling and co-implantation of tumour cells with MB-MAFs enhances the colonization of the leptomeninges …

Making Tabby, Making Place: Examining A Gullah Geechee Wattle And Tabby Daub Dwelling Through Thin Section Analysis, Jacob E. Hamill May 2025

Making Tabby, Making Place: Examining A Gullah Geechee Wattle And Tabby Daub Dwelling Through Thin Section Analysis, Jacob E. Hamill

Graduate Masters Theses

Tabby is a building material made from lime, sand, oyster shell, and water that is geographically associated with the Sea Islands of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. This material was used from the early 18th century to end of the American Civil War to construct all-manner of buildings in the Sea Islands region. Enslaved African descendant communities constructed wattle and tabby daub dwellings within plantation landscapes, and these settlements are interpreted as spaces where enslaved people exercised greater spatial autonomy.

This thesis analyzes the remains of a wattle and tabby daub structure located on what was once Old Fort …

Over the last 20 years, research into the Meibomian glands of the eyelids has increased exponentially and is now widely recognized as a field of research. It is all the more astonishing that knowledge about another type of gland in the eyelids, the Moll glands or ciliary glands, has almost stagnated and there has been little to almost no progress, even though this type of gland as a whole takes up a relatively large volume in the upper and lower eyelids. There is not much information about the namesake Moll or the function of the glands although these are listed …

The Central Role Of Cytochrome P450 Reductase (Cpr) In Hyperoxic Lung Injury, Deven Narke, Bhagavatula Moorthy

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Introduction: Hyperoxic lung injury results from excessive supplemental oxygen therapy in conditions such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in adults. This review explores the role of cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR) in hyperoxic lung injury.

Areas covered: Hyperoxia induces the production of reactive oxygen species in excessive amounts, overwhelming the body's antioxidant defenses and exacerbating lung injury in ARDS/BPD. This review examines the differential roles of CPR-dependent enzymes in the context of hyperoxic lung injury. Additionally, we highlight the potential of targeting CPR to study mechanisms of lung injury and leverage gene-editing technologies …

Advancing Marine Animal Movement Studies Using An Open Innovation Framework, Jacob Levenson May 2025

Advancing Marine Animal Movement Studies Using An Open Innovation Framework, Jacob Levenson

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the application of open innovation to migratory marine animal movement studies, addressing critical challenges in understanding, managing and ultimately conserving highly mobile and migratory species (HMMS). The species examined herein, including manta rays, sea turtles, and marine mammals, face threats including habitat disruption and behavioral changes to adapt to anthropogenic stressors. Traditional monitoring techniques, while valuable, are often costly, limited in scale, and protected by proprietary intellectual property, all of which decrease accessibility. Ambitious conservation goals, such as protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, require more data that are indubitably sharable and thus will need to …

Factors Influencing Community Assembly Of The Amphibian Microbiome In Rochester, Ny, Thomas R. Minahan

Theses

Amphibians are crucial in wetlands and, by extension, our planet. As predator and prey, amphibians serve as keystone species, vital for the continued equilibrium in their wetland ecosystems. However, the global amphibian population is currently threatened by the spread of a pathogenic fungus known as Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Over the past thirty years, Bd has spread worldwide, threatening hundreds of amphibian species. The environmental factors that influence microbial community assembly in amphibians are key to developing interventions that can protect amphibians from disease. This research examines the abiotic and biotic factors influencing microbial community composition in amphibians of Rochester, New …

Under The Mask: Labeling And Self-Perception In Augmented Reality, Ruiyuan Guo May 2025

Under The Mask: Labeling And Self-Perception In Augmented Reality, Ruiyuan Guo

Theses

Under the Mask is a speculative AR experience that critically explores how social labels shape both perception and self-perception in everyday life. The project reimagines augmented reality not as a technological novelty, but as a conceptual mirror—a way to visualize how identity is continuously negotiated in social space. Users interact with two distinct labeling functions: when they assign a tag to themselves, it becomes visible to everyone, symbolizing the ways in which self-identification enters public discourse. In contrast, when users label others, those tags remain private—visible only to the individual user—highlighting how our assumptions primarily influence our own vision, not …

A Remote Sensing-Based Evaluation Of Road And Electricity Infrastructure Expansion Effects On Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Tunmise Ibukun Raji

Theses

Sub-Saharan African countries consistently rank low on human development indicators despite decades of international aid and domestic investment. To address these challenges, governments across the region are allocating substantial portions of their national budgets to infrastructure expansion, viewing it as a catalyst for accelerated socio-economic development. However, given severely constrained budgets, these nations often face trade-offs between infrastructure development and investment in other important sectors such as healthcare and education. This highlights the need for infrastructure investments to deliver their anticipated benefits. This dissertation examines the relationship between infrastructure development and socio-economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus …

Determining The Causation Of Microphthalmia In Cannabidiol Treated Zebrafish Embryos, Nicolas Zuniga

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid derived from the plant cannabis sativa. Multiple studies on CBD show that it is used as an anti-psychotic, an anti-inflammatory for pain relief, and an antinausea agent. The Agriculture Improvement Act (2018) played a role in removing hemp and hemp derivatives like CBD from being categorized as a Schedule I substance, which led to recreational usage in America. In 2003, there was an increase in cannabinoid consumption during pregnancy to alleviate morning sickness along with distress. Prior studies on CBD-treated zebrafish embryos have demonstrated phenotypes of microphthalmia, scoliosis, fewer neuronal connections, and less motor neuron …
