Community-Based, Culturally Relevant Stem: Engaging Rural And Indigenous Students Through Partnerships, Institutional Flexibility, And One Health, Ellen Chenoweth, Paul Cotter, Janice Straley, Kari Lanphier

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Rural and Indigenous students face many barriers to persistence in biomedical and STEM trajectories including poor access to science experiences, a dearth of relatable educational resources, and educational structures misaligned with rural and Indigenous student and community needs. Rural Alaska Students in One Health Research (RASOR) is designed to provide a positive first college experience for rural and Indigenous students. Key innovations include 1) a partnership between the University of Alaska and tribal governments to allow for culturally relevant, locallymentored research experiences and 2) a customizable program structure. We also surveyed adults in the region regarding attitudes about science, its …

Evaluating Nutrition, Exercise, And Education, On Mental Health And Quality Of Life In Menopause, Jill R. Stone Jul 2025

Evaluating Nutrition, Exercise, And Education, On Mental Health And Quality Of Life In Menopause, Jill R. Stone

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and a lack of understanding of menopause adversely affect mental health and quality of life in women entering menopause. Metabolic changes during this period can lead to an increase in visceral fat, loss of muscle mass, depression, and anxiety. These metabolic changes are linked to a higher risk for cardiovascular disease, type two diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. This cross-sectional quantitative study, guided by the health belief model, explored the contribution of adopting specific nutrition strategies, exercise, and education in women during menopause transition to help manage mental health (as measured by depression and tension), and quality …

Stream Fish Assemblage Dynamics And Barriers To Aquatic Connectivity In The Ichawaynochaway Creek Watershed, Georgia, Usa, Jake R. Duhé Jul 2025

Stream Fish Assemblage Dynamics And Barriers To Aquatic Connectivity In The Ichawaynochaway Creek Watershed, Georgia, Usa, Jake R. Duhé

LSU Master's Theses

Stream fishes in the southeastern United States are adapted to hydrological disturbances such as droughts. However, this region is projected to experience increasingly frequent and severe disturbances that will elevate water demands given increasing agricultural and urban development. Further, road-stream crossings (RSCs) are abundant features in these streams that can exacerbate drought-mediated stream fragmentation and impede movements by many aquatic organisms, including fishes, when poorly constructed. These compounding effects may adversely affect the diversity and abundances of resident stream fishes, but their interactions remain poorly understood, warranting rigorous testing of how droughts and RSCs influence stream fish dynamics. I assessed …

Impact Of Fructose-Enhanced Solid And Soft Drink Diets On Metabolism, Physiology, And Gut Microbiome In Pregnant Rats, Xiaoyuan Han, Linda D. Shortliffe, Neeraja Kambham

Pacific Faculty Work

Introduction: High fructose consumption is linked to hypertension and metabolic disorders. We hypothesize fructose (solid and/or liquid) may further influence dietary patterns. To investigate potential effects, we compared eating behaviors, physiological and metabolic measures, and gut microbiome in pregnant rats fed solid or liquid fructose-enhanced (soft drink) diets to those fed standard chow. Methods: Pregnant rats were assigned to three dietary groups: (1) standard chow and water (CW), (2) standard chow and decarbonated soft drink (CS, decarbonated Sprite with 5.89% fructose w/v), and (3) 60% fructose chow and water (FW). Body weight, blood pressure, food and liquid intake, fasting blood …

It is known that β1 integrins and a downstream signaling molecule c-Src are upregulated in prostate cancer (PrCa) tissues, are co-expressed in circulating small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) and contribute to cancer progression. Here, we demonstrate that sEVs from PrCa patients show robust expression of both β1 integrins and c-Src. The impact of irradiation, a widely used therapy for the treatment of PrCa, on circulating sEVs is however not fully understood. We show that sEVs isolated from the plasma of transgenic adenocarcinoma of mouse prostate (TRAMP) mice, stimulate migration and anchorage-independent growth of recipient cancer cells, but sEVs are not active …

Coastal radar system are located around the world and many happen to transmit at frequencies capable of skywave propagation via the ionosphere. Therefore, they can be detected hundreds to thousands of kilometers away. This paper demonstrates the opportunity to detect 39 Coastal Ocean Dynamics Application Radar transmitters located on the western coast of the United States using three HF radio receivers in Utah and New Mexico. It also illustrates the possibility to use the phase and Doppler measurements of these signals to derive displacements of the refracting ionospheric layer up to meter resolution for the 2023 annular solar eclipse, an …

Genetic Gain And Loss In The Evolution Of Amniote T Cell Receptor And Immunoglobulin Genes, Jordan M. Sampson Jul 2025

Genetic Gain And Loss In The Evolution Of Amniote T Cell Receptor And Immunoglobulin Genes, Jordan M. Sampson

Biology ETDs

The immune system of most jawed vertebrates consists of three major cell types: αβ T cells, γδ T cells, and B cells. Every species evaluated contains the loci that encode the highly conserved αβ T cells, however, γδ T cells are less conserved and have been lost in squamate reptiles. The loci that encode the B cell receptor have also varied across evolution. Seven immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy chain isotypes have been identified in amniotes: IgM, IgD, IgY, IgG, IgE, IgO, and IgA. Some are found in most species (IgM and IgD) and others only in specific lineages (IgY or IgG). …

The alveolar bone is a specialized mineralized structure supporting the lifelong functionality of the tooth in mastication. The alveolar bone develops from the dental follicle (DF) during tooth root formation due to deliberate epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. However, how DF progenitor cell fates are regulated toward alveolar bone osteoblasts remains unknown. We find that Hedgehog signaling activities are transiently activated during the onset of tooth root formation and alveolar bone formation. Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP)-expressing DF cells are highly responsive to Hedgehog signaling, yet constitutive Hedgehog activation using Pthrp-creER and Ptch1-floxed alleles potently suppresses alveolar osteoblast and ligament differentiation of PTHrP+ DF …

The Theoretical Role Of The Wind In Aerosolising Microplastics And Nanoplastics From Coastal Combined Sewer Overflows, Lauren Biermann, David Moffat, Clive E Sabel, Thomas E Stovin Jul 2025

The Theoretical Role Of The Wind In Aerosolising Microplastics And Nanoplastics From Coastal Combined Sewer Overflows, Lauren Biermann, David Moffat, Clive E Sabel, Thomas E Stovin

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Inhaled microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) have shown bio-persistence in the body, with concerning implications for human health. Airborne MNPs primarily originate from terrestrial sources, but sea air may contribute when onshore 'aerosolising' winds coincide with high concentrations of MNPs in surface waters. From the thousands of cities worldwide with Combined Sewer Overflows, millions to billions of MNPs can be discharged daily into rivers, estuaries, and the sea. To assess the possible links between water pollution and air quality, we analysed two years of Combined Sewer Overflows (spills) off Plymouth, UK, alongside same-day and long-term meteorological and satellite data. Winds exceeding …

A Sensory Investment Syndrome Hypothesis: Personality And Predictability Are Linked To Sensory Capacity In The Hermit Crab Pagurus Bernhardus, Ari Drummond, Summer Nash, Tianna Holloway, Alexander Wilson, Lucy Turner, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Correlated phenotypic traits (i.e., syndromes) may manifest as associations between different behavioural types or between behavioural and non-behavioural phenotypes. While syndromes research is extensive, correlations involving behavioural type and sensory morphology have yet to be investigated. Sensation is essential in decision-making and should be correlated with behavioural phenotypes involved in risk response, including boldness. We investigated correlations between boldness and sensory capacity in Pagurus bernhardus hermit crabs, taking repeat measures of startle response durations to assess hermit crab personality and predictability. The correlation between startle response and the sensillar density (i.e., number of sensilla per unit surface area) of both …

Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) and fumarate hydratase (FH)-deficient renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are rare and highly aggressive cancers. Although the combination of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibition by bevacizumab and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibition by erlotinib is clinically used for both diseases, the differential effect of each component has not been investigated. Transcriptomic profiling revealed that RMC and FH-deficient tumor tissues demonstrate increased EGFR but not VEGF expression compared with adjacent normal kidney. Subsequent in vitro studies revealed that RMC and FH-deficient cell lines are sensitive to erlotinib treatment, whereas clear cell RCC cell lines are resistant. …

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects multiple organs, including the skin and kidneys. The etiology of SLE remains unclear but involves hormonal, environmental, and genetic factors. Environmental factors, such as diet and microbiota-derived metabolites, among which short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are major players, can influence autoimmune disease pathogenesis.

Objectives: This study investigates the involvement of SCFAs in the pathogenesis of SLE and further investigates the effect of propionate (PA) supplementation on SLE disease outcome in MRL-lpr mice.

Methods: Cecal SCFAs from mouse models with varying degrees of SLE disease activities (C57BL/6, MRL+/+, and MRL-lpr) …

Oxytocin Reduces Asymmetries In Dominance Relationships Between Pairs Of Captive Female Lions, Jessica C Burkhart, Abby Guthmann, Evianne M Dubois, Sarah R Heilbronner, Craig Packer

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Free-ranging female African lions maintain symmetrical social relationships by respecting each other's "ownership" of valuable food items rather than by supplanting subordinates according to well-defined dominance hierarchies. However, captivity often skews relationships in captive carnivores, hence we investigated whether captive female lions demonstrate obvious dominance relationships. Oxytocin has been shown to elicit context-specific impacts that equalize dominant subordinate relationships, thus we hypothesized that oxytocin would reduce any asymmetries found between dominants and subordinates in captive lions. We designed two experimental protocols for investigating pairwise relationships. We first identified dominant individuals by performing neutral trials that allowed each female equal opportunity …

ACTA2 pathogenic variants altering arginine 179 cause childhood-onset strokes due to moyamoya disease (MMD)-like occlusions of the distal internal carotid arteries, but the mechanisms of pathogenesis are unknown and no preventive treatments exist. Here we show that Acta2R179C/+ smooth muscle cells (SMCs) fail to fully differentiate and maintain stem cell-like features, including increased migration and glycolytic flux compared to wildtype (WT) SMCs. Increasing mitochondrial respiration with nicotinamide riboside (NR) drives differentiation and decreases migration of Acta2R179C/+ SMCs. Carotid artery injury of Acta2SMC-R179C/+ mice leads to premature death, intraluminal SMC accumulation leading to MMD-like occlusive lesions, neurologic symptoms, …

Pediatric high-grade gliomas (pHGGs), particularly diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs), are among the most lethal brain tumors due to poor survival and resistance to therapies. DMGs possess a distinct genetic profile, primarily driven by hallmark mutations such as H3K27M, ACVR1, and PDGFRA mutations/amplifications and TP53 inactivation, all of which contribute to tumor biology and therapeutic resistance. Developing physiologically relevant preclinical models that replicate both tumor biology and the tumor microenvironment (TME) is critical for advancing effective treatments. This review highlights recent progress in in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models, including patient-derived brain organoids, genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs), and …

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

Unicuspid aortic valve (UAV) is a rare congenital anomaly, diagnosed in individuals aged 30 to 50. It is associated with aortic stenosis or aortic regurgitation, potentially leading to heart failure. We report a case of a 28-year-old male with an acommissural UAV, aortopathy, critical aortic stenosis, and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, presenting with shortness of breath. This case is notable for late presentation of an acommissural UAV, which typically manifests in childhood.

Television Viewing And Family Communication Jul 2025

Television Viewing And Family Communication

Communication Research Trends

Over the past thirty years a host of research studies has sought to determine just what are the effects of television viewing on social behaviour. In particular, study after study has attempted to establish once and for all whether or not the watching of violent programmes by children and adolescents is a direct cause of later aggressive behaviour.

Yet today all that these studies can tell us for certain is that ''for some children, under some conditions, some television is harmful'' and that ''for most children, under most conditions, most television is probably neither harmful nor particularly beneficial." And we …

Community Members’ Perspectives On A Community-Engaged Process For Supporting Vibrant Greenspaces In Detroit, Alysha D. Matthews, Guilherme Hebling Costa, Karl Erickson, Karin A. Pfeiffer, Amber L. Pearson, Benjamin V. Dougherty

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Greenspaces provide several well-being (Dinnie et al., 2013) and psychosocial benefits (Addy et al., 2004). Community-engaged research affords community partners a voice in the project (Cushman et al., 2004). This study assessed Detroit community members’ perceived benefits of and suggestions for engaging with the community to support greenspaces. Through qualitative analysis, a three-step process for community-engaged planning was revealed. Findings highlight strategies that involve community members in this process to enhance community engagement and well-being.

Establishing An Evaluative Mechanism For Cura Personalis, Jarrod Stadnyk

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Cura personalis is an important characteristic of Jesuit education. Peter Hans Kolvenbach, S.J. helped to focus attention on the importance of cura personalis in Jesuit education. However, rather than simply being individual care for the whole person, cura personalis is an illusive concept that is easier to recite than apply in practice. This article proposes an evaluative mechanism that can be used to gauge a person’s or organization’s depth in providing cura personalis for higher education students. The Higher Education Cura Personalis Reflection Chart within this article is a new mechanism that can help guide the process of determining what …

Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects around 537 million people globally, with 77 million cases in India. Type 2 DM is primarily linked to poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles, leading to either insulin resistance or impaired insulin secretion. In Ayurveda this condition is referred to as Apathyanimmataja Prameha. To promote healthier food choices, the Indian government declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets, emphasizing their significant health benefits. Historically, millets, known as "Shri Anna," were among the first domesticated crops in India and were a staple food across Asia. However, with the Green Revolution prioritizing the mass production of rice …
