Robust Embeddings Of Genetics, Anatomy, And State Decoded From A Neuron’S Activity, Aidan Schneider Jul 2025

Robust Embeddings Of Genetics, Anatomy, And State Decoded From A Neuron’S Activity, Aidan Schneider

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Neural spike trains are shaped by both extrinsic inputs and intrinsic structural constraints. While prior work has focused on how spike timing encodes externally driven variables, such as stimuli or behavior, this dissertation explores whether principles that organize neural activity in space and time—such as genetic cell type, anatomical location, and arousal state—are also embedded in the spiking output of individual neurons. I hypothesize that these organizing principles are not quenched as irrelevant variability, but rather multiplexed within the neural code itself. To test this, I attempt to decode these principles from the spike trains of neurons recorded in behaving …

Abstract

A Synthesis of Sociological Perspectives on Culture and Social Evolution This paper provides an in-depth exploration of culture as a foundational element in the study of sociology, dissecting its central components—knowledge, language, symbols, values, norms, and material objects—and their profound impact on society. Through the examination of cultural integration and diversity, the analysis foregrounds the dynamic tensions between assimilation and the preservation of subcultures, illustrating how these forces shape identities, relationships, and social cohesion in contemporary contexts. The discussion offers nuanced insights into the processes by which dominant and minority cultures interact, negotiate power, and navigate the challenges of …

The integrity of cellular membranes (lipid bilayers) and myelin sheaths covering axons is a crucial feature controlling normal brain structural and functional networks. Yet, in vivo evaluation of this integrity at the nanoscale level of the cellular membranes organization is challenging. Herein we explore the dual property of biological water in Central Nervous System (CNS), as one of the major stabilizing factors of cellular membranes, and the major source of MRI signal. We introduce the Basic Transient Hydrogen Bond (THB) model of the MR signal relaxation due to the quantum spin/magnetization exchanges within the THB Matrix encompassing water molecules and …

Neutrophils are highly abundant in the oral mucosal tissues, and their balanced activation and clearance are essential for immune homeostasis. Here, we demonstrate that neutrophils infected with the bacterial pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) are captured alive by macrophages in a manner that bypasses all known receptor-ligand interactions involved in the phagocytosis of either live or dead cells. Mechanistically, upon interaction with Pg, or its protease RgpB (gingipains), live neutrophils undergo rapid remodeling of their proteomes, generating neoepitopes. N-terminomics-based proteomic profiling identified multiple RgpB cleavage sites on several azurophilic granule proteins that are translocated to the surface of live neutrophils via …

A Case Study In Evolving Academic Governance: Democratic Accountability And Academic Capitalism, William C. Schulz, Denise Dezolt

Higher Learning Research Communications

As the higher education market becomes both more competitive and fragmented (as well as controlled through uncertain and changing regulatory regimes), and as those whom the higher education market serves become more discerning as consumers who apply proven customer behaviors within the market, universities must re-evaluate their internal governance systems. Re-evaluation of customer behaviors and governance systems may allow universities to become more inclusive, responsive, and adaptive within an academic capitalism setting.

In this case study, we present a research-based and integrated “Shared, Informed, Stakeholder-Engaged Governance” model. We describe how a large online university developed and implemented a model that …

Background: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) remains a major complication in preterm infants with lifelong sequelae. There is no effective treatment for IVH other than supportive care and surgery for post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus. We previously reported that the innate neuroimmune response in an animal model of IVH was dependent on developmental stage, only occurring in older animals.

Methods: This study utilized a lysed-blood injection model of IVH in rats. This model specifically captures the effects of blood products released by IVH on brain parenchyma. We performed RNAseq and differential gene expression analysis on CD11b/c-positive cells in the brain (microglia/macrophages) to define gene expression …

Parkinson's disease (PD) is considered the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide; treating this disease remains quite challenging. Environmental and genetic factors may play a role in the pathophysiology of PD. α-synuclein aggregation, oxidative stress, ferroptosis, mitochondrial failure, neuroinflammation, and gut dysbiosis are among the known risk factors of PD. The pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease is complicated by the interconnections between these molecular pathways, which also present significant obstacles to treatment development. However, due to its complex mechanism and long latency, PD is difficult to diagnose and detect, which presents a barrier to treatment. In addition, the need to develop …

RAS genes are frequently mutated in cancer, often at codons 12 and 61. With the recent introduction of RAS inhibitors, we can now directly investigate the effects of specific RAS mutations in cancer cells. In this study, we demonstrate that in tumors with RASG12X mutations, mutant RAS can be activated by receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK), and PI3K activation is dependent on mutant RAS. Conversely, RASQ61X mutations activate the MAPK cascade independently of RTKs, and inhibition of RASQ61X impairs MAPK pathway activation but leaves the PI3K pathway unaffected. Our characterization of these distinct features of G12X and Q61X mutations suggests that …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Cancer cells uptake excessive nutrients by expressing higher levels of glucose and/or amino acid transporters to meet their increased energy demands. L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1), is regarded as a cancer-specific transporter for the uptake of large neutral amino acids such as L-tryptophan. However, the mechanism by which LAT1 rewires cellular metabolism to promote cancer progression and chemoresistance have not yet been investigated.

METHODS: The protein levels of LAT1, p-PKM2, and p-LDHA were determined in breast cancer tissue arrays by immunohistochemistry staining followed by survival analysis. The orthotopic breast cancer models in mice, syngeneic breast cancer models, and …

Hallmarks Of Stem Cell Aging, Thomas A Rando, Anne Brunet, Margaret A Goodell

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

As organisms age, somatic stem cells progressively lose their ability to sustain tissue homeostasis and support regeneration. Although stem cells are relatively shielded from some cellular aging mechanisms compared with their differentiated progeny, they remain vulnerable to both intrinsic and extrinsic stressors. In this review, we delineate five cardinal features that characterize aged stem cells and examine how these alterations underlie functional decline across well-studied stem cell compartments. These hallmarks not only provide insight into the aging process but also serve as promising targets for therapeutic strategies aimed at rejuvenating stem cell function and extending tissue health span.

Language skills are essential to effective communication, but learning language is by no means a simple process for individuals with developmental disabilities who cannot rely on speech alone to be heard and understood. Research demonstrates that augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions positively impact development across language domains (e.g., pragmatics, semantics, morphosyntax) and may also benefit speech production. However, these gains can only be realized if people have timely access to effective AAC and have meaningful opportunities to interact with others. This paper integrates the lived experiences of individuals who need or use AAC and their families with key research …

Splicing is a complex process that is required to create the transcriptomic diversity needed for specialized functions in higher eukaryotes. The spliceosome contains more than 100 proteins and RNA molecules, which coordinate this dynamic process. Despite the ubiquity of splicing, pathogenic variants in spliceosomal components often cause a tissue-specific phenotype, hinting at further complexities that are not yet fully understood. We have identified a cohort of ten families with de novo missense variants in a spliceosomal component, CRNKL1, where nine individuals harbor one of two missense variants that both affect the same amino acid, Arg267. All affected individuals share a …

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

In this paper, we consider an extended SEIR compartmental model that incorporates young and old interacting subpopulations, allowing for cross-group transmission dynamics. Implicit behavioral changes are included to determine the influence of social behavior on coronavirus transmission dynamics. The basic reproduction number, the average number of secondary cases of infection produced by a single primary case, is derived for both the explicit and implicit model using the next-generation matrix method. We solve the associated differential equation systems and estimate useful parameters in the explicit model using physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). Our results point to how the PINNs approach offers an …

Improving Children's Television Jul 2025

Improving Children's Television

Communication Research Trends

Few areas of television programming have provoked such strong public concern and protest as children's programmes. Parents and educators fear that television may be disrupting the balanced development of children's personalities or implanting harmful values. Most of the early research on children's television was an attempt to determine more accurately whether content was truly violent or manipulative and whether violence, advertising or other content was having destructive effects.

This public reaction also sparked moves in the late 1960s to carefully design programmes such as Sesame Street which would be entertaining, instructive and contribute to the intellectual-emotional growth of the child. …

Stepping Up, Keeping On Track, And Pulling Your Own Weight: Collaborative Arts-Based Service-Learning Metaphors, Marcy Meyer

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

In this study, the author explores metaphors related to students’ experiences conducting collaborative arts-based ethnographic research in a U.S. nonprofit organization. A metaphor analysis of 25 students’ essays revealed they were most likely to frame their experiences with arts-based service learning as a journey or a sports contest. The author examines the extent to which students’ metaphors legitimize or delegitimize arts-based service learning, as well as the degree of novelty that characterizes these metaphors. She explores the implications of her findings for teaching and promoting arts-based service learning in the academy.

Co-Optive Constitutionalism, Raquel Muñiz, Andrés Castro Samayoa

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

In this Article, we introduce the concept of co-optive constitutionalism, a rhetorical mechanism through which the U.S. Supreme Court dismantles civil rights protections while paradoxically employing civil rights language to legitimize these regressive outcomes. Through a detailed analysis of the majority, concurrences, and dissents in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, we demonstrate how the Court's conservative majority strategically appropriates progressive ideals, selectively quotes precedent, and redefines equality to justify overturning decades-long precedent permitting race-conscious admissions. We situate co-optive constitutionalism within the broader conservative legal political movement spearheaded by the Federalist Society, revealing how judicial rhetoric aligns with conservative political …
