3d Data Visualization And Analysis Tools For Ai Ready City : Space Syntax And Social Media Data, Santirak Prasertsuk, Chawee Busayarat

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Space syntax is now widely accepted as a set of techniques that can be used to efficiently analyze spatial morphological structure at the city or community level. Segment analysis, a type of space syntax that is typically rendered through two-dimensional vector lines, can show the effectiveness of pedestrian and vehicular accesses to parts of a city. However, analysis of a city’s condition is far too diverse and complex for the use of space syntax alone. Other types of information, such as data from social media, can be integrated to determine and locate problems in the city, or to search for …

User Satisfaction And The Social And Environmental Benefits Of Urban Green Spaces : A Case Study Of Thimphu City, Bhutan, Chandra Man Rai, Yeshi Dorji, Sangay Zangmo

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Urban green spaces provide important recreational, social, and ecological benefits in urban settings. Understanding of the use and benefits associated with green spaces amongst urban residents is crucial in developing appropriate urban green infrastructure strategies. This study explored visitors’ levels of satisfaction with the benefits, characteristics, and determined factors influencing visitor satisfaction with urban green spaces. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey from a random sample of 125 visitors from three urban green spaces in the capital city of Bhutan, Thimphu.  Visitors' satisfaction with urban parks was assessed based on their quality, social, and environmental benefits. Descriptive statistics and …

Optimizing Open Green Space On Urban Campuses Through The Case Of Ui Salemba Campus : A Step Towards Improved Green Metric Ranking, Indrajati Wurianturi, Hayati Sari Hasibuan, Emirhadi Suganda

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Universities are trying to make their campuses sustainable. One of the tools used to evaluate the level of campus sustainability is UI Green Metric World University Rank (UIGMWUR), which focuses on sustainable efforts implemented by universities. It has become clear, however, that it is difficult for urban campuses to obtain a good ranking under the UIGMWUR framework due to the limited amount of open green space in dense city areas. Therefore, one possible strategy involves optimizing the existing open green space. This research was conducted to determine some possible solutions through the use of observation and a Likert scale questionnaire. …

Sex Differences In Metabolic Indices And Chronic Neuroinflammation In Response To Prolonged High-Fat Diet In Apoe4 Knock-In Mice, Jennifer M. Mattar, Mark Majchrzak, Jaclyn Iannucci, Sydney Bartman, John K. Robinson, Paula Grammas Jan 2022

Sex Differences In Metabolic Indices And Chronic Neuroinflammation In Response To Prolonged High-Fat Diet In Apoe4 Knock-In Mice, Jennifer M. Mattar, Mark Majchrzak, Jaclyn Iannucci, Sydney Bartman, John K. Robinson, Paula Grammas

Psychology Faculty Publications

Late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD) likely results from combinations of risk factors that include both genetic predisposition and modifiable lifestyle factors. The E4 allele of apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is the most significant genetic risk factor for LOAD. A Western-pattern diet (WD) has been shown to strongly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, conditions which have been strongly linked to an increased risk for developing AD. Little is known about how the WD may contribute to, or enhance, the increased risk presented by possession of the ApoE4 allele. To model this interaction over the course of a lifetime, we exposed …

Human Nature, Mary Robb Jan 2022

Human Nature, Mary Robb

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Human Nature explores my personal observations and life experiences through the use of my narrative ceramic sculptures. Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics or behaviors to non-human entities, such as animals. Some animals are more desirable than others, but all have value and purpose. They exist for a reason. They all bleed. They just want to be. People are like that. I became untrusting of humans after a childhood trauma and began relating more to animals than humans. I observed many similarities in wild animals with my experience. They are continually on alert searching for food and watching for …

Development And Utilization Of Geodatabase: Predicting Biodiversity In Equatorial Guinea, Africa, Nicholas Treusch Jan 2022

Development And Utilization Of Geodatabase: Predicting Biodiversity In Equatorial Guinea, Africa, Nicholas Treusch

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

After declaring independence in 1968 and discovering oil reserves in 1995, Equatorial Guinea has arisen as one of the wealthier countries in Africa but unfortunately has become one of the most volatile countries as well, with the numerous military coups and disproportionate distribution of wealth. This nation also houses some of the most diverse wildlife on earth, with several endangered species of mammals, as well as reptilian and bird species that are unique only to Equatorial Guinea. With increased bushmeat demand increasing in the last two decades, illegal hunting activities have increased as well, even in national parks. Because of …

The Impact Of Food Deprivation On Cardiovascular Physiology, Steven Philip Stelly Jan 2022

The Impact Of Food Deprivation On Cardiovascular Physiology, Steven Philip Stelly

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Introduction: Despite the commonality of fasting, there still remains a lack of scientific research, specifically in regard to the impact of fasting on cardiovascular physiology. Thus, the goal of this research project was to further explore the relationship between fasting and cardiovascular physiology. Hypothesis: The hypothesis of this research project was that a 24-hr fast would likely lead to increased BP and HR, along with blood biomarker changes, and that experiencing this 24-hr fast twice a week would lead to reduced BP and HR along with altered circulating blood biomarker levels. Methods: In order to test these hypotheses, cardiovascular and …

Spatial Geochemical Changes In Central And East Texas Soils Over Time Resulting From Human Decomposition, Isabela Marisol Overturf Jan 2022

Spatial Geochemical Changes In Central And East Texas Soils Over Time Resulting From Human Decomposition, Isabela Marisol Overturf

CMC Senior Theses

Human decomposition is studied to aid forensic investigations and better understand the impact of cemeteries on urban resources like soil and groundwater. The purpose of this study was to identify changes in soil geochemistry at and around a human grave to search for lateral nutrient movement and possibly identify new patterns in elemental concentrations that could be used in estimating post-mortem intervals (PMIs). At the Forensic Anthropology Research Facility (FARF) at Texas State San Marcos, soil samples were collected from a shallow grave over the course of 54 days to conduct analysis for organic matter content, texture, pH, and bulk …

Can Social Science Teach Congress New Tricks?: Addressing The Need For Educational Support Dogs In Classrooms, Elaina H. Wilson Jan 2022

Can Social Science Teach Congress New Tricks?: Addressing The Need For Educational Support Dogs In Classrooms, Elaina H. Wilson

Indiana Law Journal

In the United States, children with disabilities are afforded protections in three federal statutes: the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. However, these laws fail to provide for educational support dogs in public schools, despite the common and successful use of educational support dogs in other countries. The success of educational support dogs abroad is not suprising, as recent waves of social science research make clear the benefits of dogs in schools, from increased productivity within the classroom to improved morale within the school community …

The Next Pandemic Might Be A Petdemic, Hillary Greene Jan 2022

The Next Pandemic Might Be A Petdemic, Hillary Greene

Indiana Law Journal

A new scientific study shows that COVID-19 can be transmitted from cats to humans. Luckily, this channel of transmission seems extremely rare, at least thus far. But next time—and there will be a next time—we may not be so fortunate. This Article addresses this underappreciated risk of what I term a “petdemic”—a pandemic or epidemic that involves significant disease transmission between pets and humans. With nearly 70% of U.S. households owning pets, a petdemic could be catastrophic. One of our go-to responses for even perceived petdemics, honed over the last century, is to slaughter our pets. This pioneering Article proposes …

Do Social Movements Spur Corporate Change? The Rise Of “Metoo Termination Rights” In Ceo Contracts, Rachel Arnow-Richman, James Hicks, Steven Davidoff Solomon Jan 2022

Do Social Movements Spur Corporate Change? The Rise Of “Metoo Termination Rights” In Ceo Contracts, Rachel Arnow-Richman, James Hicks, Steven Davidoff Solomon

Indiana Law Journal

Do social movements spur corporate change? This Article sheds new empirical and theoretical light on the issue through an original study of executive contracts before and after MeToo. The MeToo movement, beginning in late 2017, exposed a workplace culture seemingly permissive of high-level, sex-based misconduct. Companies typically responded slowly and imposed few consequences on perpetrators, often allowing them to depart with lucrative exit packages. Why did companies reward rather than penalize bad actors, and has the movement disrupted this culture of complicity?

The passage of time since the height of the movement allows us to investigate these issues empirically, using …

Delusions, Moral Incapacity, And The Case For Moral Wrongfulness, Lea Johnston Jan 2022

Delusions, Moral Incapacity, And The Case For Moral Wrongfulness, Lea Johnston

Indiana Law Journal

Responsibility is a legal—not medical—construct. However, science can be useful in exposing faulty assumptions underlying current doctrine or practice, illuminating changes in practice or evidentiary standards to better effectuate the law’s animating purpose, and even suggesting updates to legal standards to account for modern understandings of functionalities of concern. This Article uses the science of delusions to assess the law regarding, and practice of establishing, criminal irresponsibility for defendants with psychosis. Over the last two decades, researchers from the cognitive sciences have compiled strong evidence that a host of cognitive and emotional impairments contribute to the origin and maintenance of …

Bargaining For Abolition, Zohra Ahmed Jan 2022

Bargaining For Abolition, Zohra Ahmed

Fordham Law Review

What if instead of seeing criminal court as an institution driven by the operation of rules, we saw it as a workplace where people labor to criminalize those with the misfortune to be prosecuted? Early observers of twentieth century urban criminal courts likened them to factories. Since then, commentators often deploy the pejorative epithet “assembly line justice” to describe criminal court’s processes. The term conveys the criticism of a mechanical system delivering a form of justice that is impersonal and fallible. Perhaps unintentionally, the epithet reveals another truth: criminal court is also a workplace, and it takes labor to keep …

Spatiotemporal Relationships Of Coyotes And Free-Ranging Domestic Cats As Indicators Of Conflict In Culver City, California, Rebecca N. Davenport, Melinda Weaver, Katherine C. B. Weiss, Eric G. Strauss Jan 2022

Spatiotemporal Relationships Of Coyotes And Free-Ranging Domestic Cats As Indicators Of Conflict In Culver City, California, Rebecca N. Davenport, Melinda Weaver, Katherine C. B. Weiss, Eric G. Strauss

Center for Urban Resilience Scholarship

As habitat generalists, urban coyote (Canis latrans) populations often utilize an abundance of diverse food sources in cities. Within southern California, domestic cats (Felis catus) comprise a higher proportion of coyote diets than in other studied urban areas throughout the United States. However, it is unclear which ecological factors contribute to higher rates of cat depredation by coyotes in this region. While previous research suggests that coyote presence may have a negative effect on free-ranging domestic cat distributions, few studies have determined whether urban green spaces affect coyote or free-ranging domestic cat occurrence and activity within …

Length–Weight Relation For Seven Neotropical Freshwater Fish Species (Actinopterygii) Endemic To Central America, Justin C. Bagley, Maria Florencia Breitman, Jerald B. Johnson

Research, Publications & Creative Work

In the presently reported study, we estimated length–weight relation (LWRs) for seven species of freshwater fishes from Central America. Samples were collected using seines from 60 sites across Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama during field expeditions conducted between 1997 and 2012. The fishes were preserved and transported to the lab, where their total weight (W) was measured (to nearest 0.0001 g) and standard lengths were taken (to nearest 0.01 mm). Data were collected from four livebearers (Poeciliidae), Alfaro cultratus (Regan, 1908), Phallichthys amates (Miller, 1907), Poecilia gillii (Kner, 1863), and Priapichthys annectens (Regan, 1907); the cichlids (Cichlidae), Parachromis dovii (Günther, …

Marcus Drymon, Amanda E. Jefferson, Matthew B. Jargowsky, Emily A. Seubert, Simon Dedman, John Mareska, Sean P. Powers

University Faculty and Staff Publications

In the Gulf of Mexico, the red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) is an immensely popular sportfish, yet the Gulf of Mexico stock is currently managed as data-limited in federal waters. The results of the federal stock assessment conducted in 2016 for Gulf of Mexico red drum were not recommended for providing management advice. Consequently, we sought to address data gaps highlighted in the assessment by producing up-to- date overall and sex-specific growth models, standardized indices of relative abundance, and predictions of habitat suitability and by updating estimates of natural mortality. Using a time series for the period of 2006–2018, we assigned …

Combatting Ai’S Protectionism & Totalitarian-Coded Hypnosis: The Case For Ai Reparations & Antitrust Remedies In The Ecology Of Collective Self-Determination, Maurice Dyson

SMU Law Review

Artificial Intelligence’s (AI) global race for comparative advantage has the world spinning, while leaving people of color and the poor rushing to reinvent AI imagination in less racist, destructive ways. In repurposing AI technology, we can look to close the national racial gaps in academic achievement, healthcare, housing, income, and fairness in the criminal justice system to conceive what AI reparations can fairly look like. AI can create a fantasy world, realizing goods we previously thought impossible. However, if AI does not close these national gaps, it no longer has foreseeable or practical social utility value compared to its foreseeable …

The Electrophysiological Correlates Of Text Integration And Direct Vs. Indirect Articles: A Centralized And Lateralized Examination, Deanna C. Hall

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

As we read, we develop mental models of the discourse content called situation models. Situation models are integral to how we keep track of information, and to do so in an ongoing event incoming information needs to be integrated into the model or discarded. The type of information being presented, and its relation to prior data, impacts how that new information is processed. The current research examined discourse passages containing concepts that were either previously mentioned (match), mentioned with a general term (general category), unmentioned in lieu of another concept (mismatch), or completely unmentioned previously (indeterminate), and examined how these …

Taking Down The Eighth Circuit Monolith: Big-Ag & Ag-Gag, Kelly Shanahan

Nebraska Law Review

The term “Ag-Gag” refers to a collection of laws passed by various state legislatures to protect farm animal operations from undercover investigations and whistleblowers that document animal cruelty.1 These laws are also often referred to as farm security laws or antiwhistleblower legislation.2 There have been two phases of these laws within the United States.3 First, in the 1990s, Kansas, Montana, and North Dakota legislators passed laws in response to an uptick in terroristic bombings and arsons occurring primarily at non-farm facilities like research laboratories.4 State legislatures passed the second phase of Ag-Gag laws in the 2010s largely in response to …

Changing The Rules For Direct Democracy In The Twenty-First Century In Response To Animal Welfare, Marijuana, Minimum Wage, Medicaid, Elections, And Gambling Initiatives, John Dinan

Nebraska Law Review

In many of the twenty-four states that permit voters to initiate statutes, constitutional amendments, or both,1 groups routinely rely on initiatives to enact policies unattainable through the legislature. In recent decades, initiatives have been a vehicle for both limiting and increasing taxes and spending, imposing legislative term limits, raising the minimum wage, limiting affirmative action, legalizing marijuana, expanding gambling operations, protecting animal welfare, and establishing redistricting commissions, among other measures that are often blocked by legislators but embraced by voters.2 This Article focuses on rules governing the initiative process. It explains the numerous wide-ranging efforts to change initiative process rules …
