Chromium (Cr) is a heavy metal of commercial importance; thus, significant amounts are released in wastewaters. The mobility and distribution of metals in the environment is related not only to their concentration but also to their availability in the environment. Most chromium (Cr) exists in oxidation states ranging from 0 to VI in soils but the most stable and common forms are Cr(0), Cr(III), and Cr(VI) species. Cr can have positive and negative effects on health, according to the dose, exposure time, and its oxidation state. Its behavior in soil, its soil-plant transfer and accumulation in different plant parts vary …

Gemcitabine is a broad-spectrum antimetabolite and a deoxycytidine analog recognized as a standard therapy alone or in combination with other antineoplastic agents in the therapy of pancreas cancer. Drug resistance following gemcitabine treatment is a common phenomenon; therefore, combinational therapy models are usually preferred. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, or pancreas cancer, is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. With the increasing incidence of pancreatic cancer every year, the mortality rate is also rising significantly because of late diagnosis, and limited chemotherapy options. Adjuvant chemotherapy after surgical resection is the typical option for the treatment of early pancreatic cancer. Mostly, …

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing public health threat. Improved surveillance of AMR's genetic indicators in environmental reservoirs should lead to a more comprehensive understanding of the problem at a global scale, as with SARS-CoV-2 monitoring in sewage. However, the “best” monitoring approach is unclear. Some scientific works have emphasized monitoring for the abundance of already-known antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs); others have emphasized monitoring for the potential of new ARGs to arise. The goal of this study was to examine which methods were employed by highly-cited papers studying AMR in environmental engineering and agricultural systems, thus providing insight into current …

Distributed Wireless Sensor Node Localization Based On Penguin Searchoptimization, Md Al Shayokh, Soo Young Shin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have become popular for sensing areas-of-interest and performing assigned tasks based on information on the location of sensor devices. Localization in WSNs is aimed at designating distinct geographical information to the inordinate nodes within a search area. Biologically inspired algorithms are being applied extensively in WSN localization to determine inordinate nodes more precisely while consuming minimal computation time. An optimization algorithm belonging to the metaheuristic class and named penguin search optimization (PeSOA) is presented in this paper. It utilizes the hunting approaches in a collaborative manner to determine the inordinate nodes within an area of interest. …

To increase the suitability of PVA (C2H4O)n and render it ideal for food packaging, a diversity of studies have already been carried out. In the below-mentioned script, we, for the first time, report the use of natural product osthol in making a new composite with PVA for enhancing thermal, physicochemical, and antimicrobial properties. The significant aim of the report is the insertion of osthol (C15H16O3 …
Elliptical Kinematics Of The Accretive Surface Growth, Zehra Özdemi̇r, Gül Güner
Elliptical Kinematics Of The Accretive Surface Growth, Zehra Özdemi̇r, Gül Güner
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
The stresses within the soft tissue are not constant for some shell surfaces. They vary with position along the mantle edge. In this paper, we show that elliptical geometry is more convenient to describe this type of surface. Thus, we introduce the elliptical kinematics along an initial curve and construct some accretive surfaces with an elliptical cross-section. In fact, these surfaces are not only curves with an elliptical cross-sectional curve, but also the material points of the surface follow an elliptical trajectory during their formation. This situation can be easily explained through elliptical motion and elliptical quaternion algebra. Then, we …

Analyzing Bifurcation, Stability, And Chaos Control For A Discrete-Time Prey-Predator Model With Allee Effect, Fi̇gen Kangalgi̇l, Ni̇lüfer Topsakal, Ni̇hal Öztürk
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, the qualitative behavior of a discrete-time prey-predator model with Allee effect in prey population is discussed. Firstly, the existence of the fixed points and their topological classification are analyzed algebraically. Then, the conditions of existence for both period-doubling and Neimark--Sacker bifurcations arising from coexistence fixed point with the help of the center manifold theorem and bifurcation theory are investigated. OGY feedback control method is implemented to control chaos in the proposed model due to the emergence of bifurcations. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to support the theoretical findings.

This editorial essay introduces a special issue on education for sustainability, early childhood education and initial teacher education. We adopt a duoethnographic approach to first provide an overview of the issues, gaps, tensions and challenges in past and current trends in early childhood education for sustainability (ECEfS) in initial teacher education (ITE). Then, from our perspectives as four teacher educators located in disparate regions of the world: Finland, Turkiye, Canada, and Australia, we invite readers into our own stories as a starting place to explore the papers within the special issue. Through this dynamic interplay of four critically questioning minds …
Broadening Ontological And Epistemological Possibilities Within Early Childhood Teacher Education For Sustainability, Kassahun Weldemariam
Broadening Ontological And Epistemological Possibilities Within Early Childhood Teacher Education For Sustainability, Kassahun Weldemariam
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The dominant sustainability ethos and discourse within early childhood education pursue a normative ontological and epistemological direction aimed at empowering children’s agency and thus, building certain predefined moral values, knowledge, and skills. Likewise, mainstream early childhood teacher education programmes strive to build early childhood pre-service teachers’ sustainability knowledge and skills, especially to enhance their capacity to be transformative agents and motivators for change to engage children with sustainability challenges. In this conceptual article, drawing on posthuman concepts, I highlight the limits of such orthodox assumptions in early childhood education for sustainability (ECEfS) teacher education and invite broader ontological and epistemic …
Early Childhood Teachers’ Perceptions Of Environmental Sustainability: A Phenomenographic Investigation, Jane Spiteri
Early Childhood Teachers’ Perceptions Of Environmental Sustainability: A Phenomenographic Investigation, Jane Spiteri
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Early childhood teachers’ environmental perceptions can influence young children’s learning about environmental issues. Yet, to date, there is minimal research focusing on the perceptions of environmental sustainability held by early childhood teachers. This qualitative phenomenographic study collected data via individual semi-structured interviews with five early childhood teachers and one head teacher, in Malta. Preliminary findings revealed that the participants perceived environmental sustainability in terms of environmental concerns; environmental responsibility; and environmental protection. A mismatch between the participants’ environmental concerns and their pro-environmental behaviour emerged. The data also show that any environmental activities at school were done so uncritically. These findings …
Weaving Child-Plastic Relations With Early Childhood Educators In The Ecuadorian Andes, Alexandra M. Berry
Weaving Child-Plastic Relations With Early Childhood Educators In The Ecuadorian Andes, Alexandra M. Berry
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In a small village in the Ecuadorian Andes called Racar, plastics are intimately woven into social and ecological structures. These entanglements move beyond human control and generate toxic dependencies between humans, plastics, and others. This requires a pedagogical shift in how early childhood educators understand and respond to plastics. Drawing on field research with educators in Racar, this paper attempts to interrupt human-centric discourses of the child as separate from Andean ecologies and resituates childhoods as differentially embedded in complex place relations.
Using Formative Assessment To Build Coherence Between Educational Policy And Classroom Practice: A Case Study Using Inquiry In Science, Connie Cirkony, John Daniel Kenny
Using Formative Assessment To Build Coherence Between Educational Policy And Classroom Practice: A Case Study Using Inquiry In Science, Connie Cirkony, John Daniel Kenny
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In this paper we argue that the complexity of education systems can lead to a lack of coherence in the implementation of policy. More effective educational change requires policy-makers and researchers to pay more attention to supporting teachers in classrooms. As an example, we consider decades of research attempts in STEM education to implement learning through inquiry and note there has been little change in teaching practices in classrooms. Using formative assessment in science education as a case study, we developed a rubric for teachers that embeds key aspects of the desired pedagogy. We argue this builds teachers’ confidence to …

Iron Toxicity-Induced Dna Damage, Dna Methylation Changes, And Ltr Retrotransposon Polymorphisms In Zea Mays, Esra Arslan Yüksel, Murat Aydin, Mahmut Si̇nan Taşpinar, Güleray Ağar
Turkish Journal of Botany
The impact of Fe2+ (iron)toxicity on genomic instability, DNA methylation status, and Long Terminal Repeat Retrotransposons (LTR RTs) polymorphisms on Zea mays is unknown. We investigated the toxicity of Fe2+ using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD), Coupled Restriction Enzyme Digestion-Random Amplification (CRED-RA) and Inter Retrotransposon Amplified Polymorphism (IRAP) assays in Zea mays seedlings, respectively. The results indicated that each dose of FeSO4 (50, 100, 200, and 300 mg/L) had a reducing effect on Genomic Template Stability (GTS) and increasing in RAPD pattern changes (DNA damage). The value of DNA methylation rised gradually depending on FeSO4 doses. Moreover, five LTR RTs …

Involvement Of Poly(Adp-Ribose)Ylation (Parylation) In The Regulation Of Antioxidant Defense System In Arabidopsis Thaliana Under Salt Stress, Rengi̇n Özgür Uzi̇lday
Turkish Journal of Botany
Posttranslational modifications (PTM) are one of the first responses of plants to environmental stress and involve changing the location and activity of proteins in the cell. Addition of poly(ADP-ribose) (PAR) to proteins, poly(ADP-ribose)ylation (PARylation), is a posttranslational modification resulting from the binding of ADP-ribose from NAD+ to target proteins by PAR polymerases (PARP). PARylation is involved in many physiological events in plants including abiotic and biotic stress response. The aim of this work was to understand involvement of PARylation in inducing enzymatic antioxidant defence and alternative electron sinks in response to salinity. For this purpose A. thaliana plants were treated …
