Case Study Of Domoic Acid Toxicosis In A California Sea Lion: Diffusion Imaging Analysis Of Anterior Thalamus And Connectivity, Isabella Michal
Case Study Of Domoic Acid Toxicosis In A California Sea Lion: Diffusion Imaging Analysis Of Anterior Thalamus And Connectivity, Isabella Michal
Theses & ETDs
Populations of wild California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are an opportunistic disease model for study of the effects of the algal toxin domoic acid. Common symptomology of chronic domoic acid toxicosis in these animals includes hippocampal atrophy and seizures. Distributed neural pathology is less well understood. The thalamus shares dense connections with the hippocampus, and there has been some evidence of thalamus lesioning in exposed sea lions and human cases, but these findings have been anecdotal. Relatedly, temporal lobe epilepsy in humans can lead to thalamus atrophy. In the present study, high resolution diffusion tensor imaging data obtained postmortem was …
The Information Needed To Successfully Educate Florida Highschool Students On The Topic Of Artificial Coral Reefs, Eliot Greene
The Information Needed To Successfully Educate Florida Highschool Students On The Topic Of Artificial Coral Reefs, Eliot Greene
Theses & ETDs
The purpose of this thesis was to create a lesson plan that teaches the importance of artificial coral reefs to high school students. There are no lesson plans designed to teach about artificial coral reefs to high school students that are publicly available for educators to use. To write a lesson plan about artificial coral reefs an extensive amount of background research was done. This included general information about corals and how they are impacted by climate change, analyzing existing artificial coral reefs, understanding the process of doing an artificial reef project from scratch, and analyzing lesson plans designed to …

Flight For Survival: The Past, Present, And Future Of The Florida Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus Savannarum Floridanus), Hope Sandlin
Theses & ETDs
The Florida grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum floridanus) is a highly endangered subspecies endemic to the dry prairies of south-central Florida. They have the capacity to act as an umbrella species for this shrinking ecosystem, wherein their conservation will protect the other species that share their habitat. They are currently threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation, degradation, and invasive species. Their populations continue to decline even in protected areas. There is no unifying cause for this decline. Currently a captive breeding program aims to revive the species and create stable wild populations. The US Fish & Wildlife Service’s recovery plan for these …
The Future Of Urban Agriculture: Community Gardening And Controlled Environment Agriculture, Bryton Calder
The Future Of Urban Agriculture: Community Gardening And Controlled Environment Agriculture, Bryton Calder
Theses & ETDs
Urban agriculture is the practice of cultivating and harnessing agriculture within cities, in order to provide for the people who live there. Our urban populations are sustained from the produce of industrial agriculture, grown far from where it is needed most. As urban populations expand many communities are being left behind, deprived of access to healthy and fresh produce. Urban agriculture offers a way to bring food production back to these communities and change urban landscapes into conduits for their own livelihoods. The act of growing and processing food within communities was the foundation of urbanization, and although cities today …
Understanding The Design Considerations Of A Community Health Org App: A Case Study With The Multicultural Health Institute, Olympia Fulcher
Understanding The Design Considerations Of A Community Health Org App: A Case Study With The Multicultural Health Institute, Olympia Fulcher
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores how software design concepts and implementation are unique when developing for public health organizations by developing an app for a local public health organization in Sarasota, Florida called The Multicultural Health Institute (MHI). In practice, public health organizations focus primarily on community trust building to foster widespread use of public health interventions. With this model in mind, and with feedback from MHI key staff and “Community Safekeepers”, an Android app was developed that allows users to access public health resources from different sources all in one screen, including content published by MHI related to public health issues …
A Spark Of Shared Creation: A Review And Analysis Of Dungeons And Dragons, Its History, And Its Impact On Marginal Identities, Toni White
Theses & ETDs
Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a game that pioneered the tabletop roleplay game genre. Given its foundational status within the genre, I pinpoint and analyze the ways D&D provides community and escapism, particularly considering the benefits minority and marginalized players gain from these concepts outside the game’s fiction. Conversely, this project points to examples in a larger pattern of D&D alienating those same marginalized players with complacent use of harmful stereotypes. I outline the ways the game has influenced pop culture and game design (with the creation of game mechanics such as the “Hit Point” and “Alignment Chart”) to center …
Sex Differences In Greb1 Expression In Xenopus Laevis, Daria Paulis
Sex Differences In Greb1 Expression In Xenopus Laevis, Daria Paulis
Theses & ETDs
Transcriptomic studies are a great tool for trying to understand the molecular support mechanisms for behavior and physiology. This thesis builds on a previous transcriptomic study that was done in Xenopus (African clawed frogs). Xenopus use sex- and species-specific vocalizations to mediate reproduction. Differences in vocalizations are supported by the sexually dimorphic larynx, the muscle responsible for vocalizations. Work to understand Xenopus laryngeal physiology and morphology had found sex differences in the fiber type, size, and density. Our past transcriptomic study found greb1 (growth regulation by estrogen in breast cancer 1) to be differentially expressed between males and females in …
Deconstructing The Viking Archetype: The Erasure Of Marginalized Groups From Viking History, Leviathan Fisher
Deconstructing The Viking Archetype: The Erasure Of Marginalized Groups From Viking History, Leviathan Fisher
Theses & ETDs
In the most authoritative early works on Viking history, there is a notable lack of discussion about Vikings that were nonwhite, queer, or gender nonconforming. These texts, nineteenth and early twentieth century creations of European/American men, instead focused on the interests of their authors: other Anglo-European men. The erasure of marginalized groups from the literature ensured that these groups were not a part of the Viking revival that introduced physical stereotypes to the public consciousness, and as a result Victorian popular culture crystallized the image of Vikings as blonde-haired, blue- eyed, cisgender-heterosexual, and white. This same image remains in modern …
Seeking Transcendence: An Argument For The Ritual Use Of Psychedelics Among The Spiritual But Not Religious, Jackson Bove
Seeking Transcendence: An Argument For The Ritual Use Of Psychedelics Among The Spiritual But Not Religious, Jackson Bove
Theses & ETDs
Currently, the movement of “spiritual but not religious” people represents a growing population in the United States. This spiritual but not religious category, primarily characterized by the rejection of institutional religion and desire for firsthand spiritual experiences, overlaps with the concurrent resurgence of psychedelic research and culture. Psychedelics indeed may elicit those spiritually meaningful experiences without the need for hierarchies and churches to mediate them. However, there is a critical need to structure the use of psychedelics. This thesis thus argues to retain the ritual and ceremonial contexts which hallucinogenic drugs have traditionally been used in as we integrate psychedelics …

Nature Photography – A Unity Game, Addie Fluegge
Theses & ETDs
Within this Thesis, I talk about the creation of a nature photography game created using C# and the Unity engine. In this game, the player begins in a nature center, and then travels between three different locations - A field, a plains river, and a volcano – each with different animals that would be native to that location in the wild. The player then can return to the nature center and view the pictures that they’ve taken. The art of the game was created using Blender, for the 3d models of the locations and buildings, and Clip Studio Paint, for …
Empirical And Epistemic Justifications:A Comparative Assessment Of Mapping Validation Techniques For Evaluating Seagrass Abundance, Maria Guardado
Empirical And Epistemic Justifications:A Comparative Assessment Of Mapping Validation Techniques For Evaluating Seagrass Abundance, Maria Guardado
Theses & ETDs
Empirically, I perform three different mapping validation procedures (by eye, photo-quadrat, and point count) in order to compare their functionality as ground truth data. I calculate the benthic substrate coverage in a subset of the Sarasota Bay in Florida by using high resolution aerial images and perform accuracy assessments using the three validation procedures. Philosophically, I assess how the methodology of mapping validation procedures assumes a framework of scientific realism for practicing scientists, implying an absolutism about the truth in scientific claims. I then assess the procedures I used in the comparative study of mapping validation procedures through the epistemic …

About Us, No Longer Without Us: What A Disability Theory Lens Has To Offer The Cognitive Sciences, Mason Tedeschi
About Us, No Longer Without Us: What A Disability Theory Lens Has To Offer The Cognitive Sciences, Mason Tedeschi
Theses & ETDs
This thesis argues that producing knowledge about the brain and behavior can recognize variance in neutral terms rather than pathologizing ones. I begin by discussing the academic field of disability studies. Disability studies defines disability as separate from impairment, which describes the actual difference in body, brain, or behavior. I will then explain how redefining the way cognitive science looks at disabilities and intentionally moving away from the perspective of deficit doesn’t require the invention of new tools. Affordance theory, which discusses an emergent property between an environment and an individual that makes actions possible, has the potential to open …
Multiple Raspberry Picamera Recording And Video Stitching Software, Zachary Carey
Multiple Raspberry Picamera Recording And Video Stitching Software, Zachary Carey
Theses & ETDs
Most animal behavior experiments constrain the experimental design to a single camera, small terrestrial animal and small arena. Advancements in modern technology have allowed for new designs of animal behavior experiments to be created like the multiple Raspberry Picamera recording system generated for the Pritzker Marine Laboratory’s flume tank. This system pilots an experimental design allowing for multiple cameras to be used, and large aquatic animals in large arenas to be studied. This Picamera system produces a single panorama-like output of the entire enclosure by using cost-effective and open-source materials, making it cheaper than standardized alternatives.
Opera And Sound As Interpretive Frames For A Cbs And Warner Bros. Tv Show: The Hundred, Emma Garza
Opera And Sound As Interpretive Frames For A Cbs And Warner Bros. Tv Show: The Hundred, Emma Garza
Theses & ETDs
This thesis looks at a CBS and Warner Bros. (CW) television show, The Hundred, to examine prominent operatic themes and how it utilizes sound. The Hundred uses both its characters and plot to demonstrate a variety of dynamics, relationships and roles that are common opera staples. Todorov’s concept of the fantastic plays an essential part in the structure of the show, allowing a discussion of what qualifies as supernatural through the categorization of events under labels of the uncanny and the marvelous. Instances of sound are also highlighted through a lens of feelings such as fear. All examples are connected …
Xenopus Muelleri Vocalizations And Their Social Contexts, Eliot Evans
Xenopus Muelleri Vocalizations And Their Social Contexts, Eliot Evans
Theses & ETDs
Anurans of the genus Xenopus provide us with an excellent model to study vocalization physiology and behavior. These frogs produce species and sex-specific vocalizations depending on their current social context. In this study, I look at the understudied species Xenopus muelleri in an attempt to elicit undiscovered vocalizations in this species as well as provide novel behavioral descriptions for each of their known vocalizations. To accomplish this, I primed male and female frogs with human chorionic gonadotropin to increase the likelihood of mating behaviors then paired males and females together both with and without a separation barrier. Temporal and behavioral …
Lilith: Mother Of Demons Or Feminist Ideal?, Sarah Cooper
Lilith: Mother Of Demons Or Feminist Ideal?, Sarah Cooper
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the relationship Jewish women have had with the Lilith figure over the past millennium to better understand the social and cultural priorities of Jewish women in different historical contexts. By approaching pre-modern conceptions of Lilith through an analysis of childbirth amulets that were used explicitly to protect against her, this thesis establishes an early understanding of Lilith as a harmful entity with the specific aim of bringing physical harm to infants. A more contemporary focus on Lilith literature from mostly Jewish women scholars brings to light a Lilith with very different priorities, much more focused on themes …

Study Of Zyomogen Granule Movement Along Actin Filaments Using A Single Beam Optical Trap, Justin James Raupp
Study Of Zyomogen Granule Movement Along Actin Filaments Using A Single Beam Optical Trap, Justin James Raupp
Wayne State University Dissertations
Zymogen granules are enzymatic vesicles in the pancreas. The surface of these zymogen granules (ZGs) has several different kinds of myosin molecules, such as myosin 1c, 6, 5c, and 7b. These molecular motors may contribute to ZG transportation in cells. To understand the molecular motors involved in the vesicle trafficking, we observed the in vitro motility of purified ZGs from rat pancreas and examined the stepping behavior and force that is generated using a single beam optical trap. To be involved in trafficking, molecular motors have certain characteristics, a high duty ratio and the ability to move continuously along actin …
Fish Community Trends In The Greenup Pool, Ohio River, Nathaniel Kingsley Fleshman
Fish Community Trends In The Greenup Pool, Ohio River, Nathaniel Kingsley Fleshman
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (H. molitrix), collectively referred to as Asian carps, are invasive species that may negatively affect native species through plankton resource exploitation mechanisms. Bighead and silver carp escaped into the Mississippi River basin in the early 1970s and have been steadily migrating upstream. The Greenup Pool lies upstream of the current known invasion of Asian carp in the Ohio River. The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) has conducted probabilistic electrofishing community surveys in the Greenup Pool since 2006 on a five-year cycle. The objective of this study was …
Applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy To Latinx Youth Experiencing Deportation Stress: A Critical Literature Review And Culturally Congruent Application, Desiree Curcio
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Deportation policies from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have harmful effects on the mental health of immigrant families in the US. These effects can be experienced at multiple points such as living in fear of deportation, undergoing ICE raids, becoming detained, or being deported. The children that witness these experiences of deportation within their families are impacted substantially. Some of the psychological effects of having a parent deported or detained can include internalizing and externalizing problems, attention difficulties, emotional and behavioral changes, interpersonal conflict, and feeling like a burden. While the impacts of deportation on youth are highlighted in the …

Simulated Dataset Of Corn Response To Nitrogen Over Thousands Of Fields And Multiple Years In Illinois, German Mandrini, Sotirios V. Archontoulis, Cameron M. Pittelkow, Taro Mieno, Nicolas F. Martin
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Nitrogen (N) fertilizer recommendations for corn (Zea mays L.) in the US Midwest have been a puzzle for several decades, without agreement among stakeholders for which methodology is the best to balance environmental and economic outcomes. Part of the reason is the lack of long-term data of crop responses to N over multiple fields since trial data is often limited in the number of soils and years it can explore. To overcome this limitation, we designed an analytical platform based on crop simulations run over millions of farming scenarios over extensive geographies. The database was calibrated and validated using data …

A central goal of introductory physics for the life sciences (IPLS) is to prepare students to use physics to model and analyze biological situations, a skill of increasing importance for their future studies and careers. Here we report our findings on life science students’ ability to carry out a sophisticated biological modeling task at the end of first-semester introductory physics. Some students were enrolled in a standard course (N = 34), and some in an IPLS course (N = 61); both courses were taught with active learning, used calculus, and included the same core physics concepts. Compared to …
Arousal, The Bible, And Bruegel’S Codpieces: The Male Body In Early Modern Visual Culture, Alison Stewart
Arousal, The Bible, And Bruegel’S Codpieces: The Male Body In Early Modern Visual Culture, Alison Stewart
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
This essay explores varied responses to the male body, including the phallus and its sixteenth- century covering, the codpiece, that existed over the past half millennium in the visual arts during which time discomfort coexisted with more neutral or positive representations of the human form. The essay will show that images indicate no monolithic attitude toward the body, clothed or not, in the centuries emerging from the Middle Ages, thereby agreeing with Bynum that a “cacophony of discourses” existed for many aspects of life, including responses to the body. Bynum’s linking of more general Medieval attitudes to those of our …
