Cloud 10: An Exploration Of Immersive Theatre’S Many Benefits And The Process Of Creating My Own Cafe, Kyla Hunter
Cloud 10: An Exploration Of Immersive Theatre’S Many Benefits And The Process Of Creating My Own Cafe, Kyla Hunter
Theses & ETDs
Immersive theatre, at its core, prioritizes bodies and the human experience. Theatre goers are typically acclimated to a passive experience that encourages distancing between the audience and the imagined world. So, by utilizing immersive theatre as a tool, I will be bridging that gap and exploring how the benefits of this genre help to integrate non- traditional theatre goers into the world of theatre. I do this by examining immersive theatre's use of sensory stimulation, audience engagement and agency, interactivity, connectivity, and more. With this in mind, I’ve created my own immersive theatre piece, Cloud 10: an immersive and interactive …
Modeling Ecological Interactions Between Two Species Of Parasitoid Wasps, Michelle Voight
Modeling Ecological Interactions Between Two Species Of Parasitoid Wasps, Michelle Voight
Theses & ETDs
The competitive exclusion principle is a commonly accepted notion within ecology; it asserts that two species with identical niches can not coexist indefinitely over ecologi- cal time. The Lotka-Volterra model of competition explores this notion by predicting the outcome of competitive events between two species. Using data on two species of parasitoid wasps, Nasonia vitripennis and Melittobia digitata, this model was ap- plied to determine the outcome of interspecific competition. The analysis found the population growth of M. digitata was possibly negatively impacted by the presence of N. vitripennis. Comparatively, the results indicated N. vitripennis was likely to be either …
Spatial Modeling Of The Relative Abundance Of Bird Populations In Peninsular Florida Using Citizen Science Data, Veronica Lee
Spatial Modeling Of The Relative Abundance Of Bird Populations In Peninsular Florida Using Citizen Science Data, Veronica Lee
Theses & ETDs
In our thesis, we will model the relative abundance of ten selected bird species in peninsular Florida using data from eBird, a citizen science project developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. We will implement strategies developed by the Cornell Lab to make best use of citizen science data in the modeling context, such as imposing structure on the data by filtering for effort on the behalf of eBird participants. We will begin by conducting generalized linear modeling using the quasi- Poisson, negative binomial, and zero-inflated Poisson distributions for the response variable. We will use covariates related to both environment …

Sustainable Tourism: How We Can Reduce The Negative Impacts Of Tourism In The National Parks, Lily Burse
Sustainable Tourism: How We Can Reduce The Negative Impacts Of Tourism In The National Parks, Lily Burse
Theses & ETDs
Tourism to the national parks is beneficial for the tourist, but the parks themselves are at risk of environmental damage. Sustainable tourism is offered as the solution to minimize the negative impacts of tourism. This thesis aims to outline three ways sustainable tourism can be implemented within the national parks. Specifically, infrastructure, government involvement, and education will be explored alongside the case studies of Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Everglades National Parks. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks were used to illustrate the value of infrastructure in sustainable tourism. Infrastructure can be used to encourage sustainable choices, or even entirely eliminate …

A Grizzly Situation An Issue Assessment Of Grizzly Bear Management In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Macie Robison
Theses & ETDs
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is one of the few remaining areas in the contiguous United States that contains a stable and thriving population of grizzly bears ( Ursus arctos horribilis). Management policies and practices have heavily impacted the success of this species’ survival. This thesis examines the relationship between the public, government agencies, and the state of Yellowstone’s grizzly population both spatially and temporally. It addresses both historic and current issues facing grizzly bears in the ecosystem today, and includes stakeholder perspectives gathered through unstructured interviews, historic documents, and legislation. It concludes that the future management of grizzly bears is …

Examining The Role Of Premenstrual Symptomatology In Emotion Regulation, Interoceptive Awareness, & Cortisol Reactivity To Competition, Sophia Laney
Theses & ETDs
Premenstrual disorders, including premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), are defined by significant fluctuations in mood, behavior, and cognition across the menstrual cycle that are inextricably linked to a differential sensitivity to cyclical hormone changes. This thesis aimed to investigate several psychological and biological correlates of premenstrual symptomatology, including emotion regulation difficulties and interoceptive abilities, as well as how premenstrual disorders are connected to cortisol reactivity and competitive stress. Two different studies were conducted to achieve this. In Study 1, self-reports, along with a competitive behavioral task and hormone assay data, were used to assess 54 participants’ extent of premenstrual symptomatology, cortisol …
“The Hand That Rocks The Cradle:” Exploring Contemporary Depictions Of Motherhood In Literature, Thalia Sanchez
“The Hand That Rocks The Cradle:” Exploring Contemporary Depictions Of Motherhood In Literature, Thalia Sanchez
Theses & ETDs
This thesis focuses on exploring depictions of motherhood in popular twentieth and twenty-first century literature. I use shifting trends in maternal literature as a means of identifying women’s shifting anxieties and frustrations around motherhood, specifically through the lens of the traditional nuclear family structure. In Chapter 1, I analyze the cultural mythology of the Virgin Mary, in conjunction with Shin Kyung-sook’s novel Please Look After Mom. The aim of this chapter is to create an understanding of what it takes to be considered a “good mother,” and the limitations of the sociocultural vision of the perfect mother. In Chapter 2, …

The Effects Of Cannabidiol Exposure On The Nervous System Regeneration Of The Planarian Dugesia Dorotocephala, Talia Neally
Theses & ETDs
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical currently being researched for its potential medical applications which are thought to include pain, nausea, and muscle tension, anxiety, and depression. An under-explored use for CBD and its medical capabilities is treating pregnant women for the most uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms. Unfortunately, there is little to no knowledge currently available as to whether use of CBD during pregnancy is safe for the developing fetus. The present study uses planaria as a model for CBD exposure during development. As will be reviewed, planaria consist of 30% stem cells known as neoblasts which gives them the unique ability …

Indigenous Aesthetics And Post-Revolutionary Nationalism: Defining Mexicanidad Through The Popular Arts And The Best-Maugard Method, Katie Margerison
Theses & ETDs
After the Mexican Revolution ended in 1920, President Álvaro Obregón (1920-1924) enacted a national reconstruction plan that aimed to establish a unified national identity through visual culture. The plan foregrounded efforts toward the cultural inclusion and integration of Mexico’s substantial yet marginalized indigenous population. Through a variety of government-sponsored events, initiatives, and educational programs related to the visual arts, Obregón sought to unify the nation by promoting indigenous culture as integral to Mexican identity. In this thesis, I examine the key ways in which Obregón’s administration was involved in popularizing indigenous aesthetics and integrating them into modern Mexican culture, while …

In The Misery Business: Female Serial Killers As Seen In U.S Popular Media, Natalie Roldan
Theses & ETDs
This thesis identifies stereotypes and gender issues that are all-encompassing in serial killers, more specifically female serial killers in the United States. The subsequent representation in the media through connections between psychology, criminology, and popular culture show how many female criminals and serial killers have been changed to fit the narrative of the professionals in said fields. Using the theories of Cesare Lombroso and Sigmund Freud as time markers for the period that they were written in. Using articles from feminist journals, psychological journals, and historical journals based around criminology, along with film reviews and basic background information, this thesis …
Not Another Cinderella Story: Immigrant And Refugee Storytellers In Contemporary Youth Literature, Alexandra Conte
Not Another Cinderella Story: Immigrant And Refugee Storytellers In Contemporary Youth Literature, Alexandra Conte
Theses & ETDs
This thesis argues that immigrant and refugee youth protagonists in Erin Entrada Kelly’s The Land of Forgotten Girls, Tae Keller’s When You Trap a Tiger, and Daniel Nayeri’s Everything Sad is Untrue use storytelling to navigate trauma. In recent years, prestigious youth literature awards such as the Newbery and Printz have gone to diverse books, including books depicting immigrants or refugee children that use storytelling to cope with traumas such as poverty, abuse, grief, and displacement. In Kelly and Keller’s novels, the Asian American protagonists inherit the position of the family storyteller to heal the matriarchal family unit following the …
Patio Pollinators: Teaching Wildlife Gardening And Appreciation Through A Video Game, Malakai Hall
Patio Pollinators: Teaching Wildlife Gardening And Appreciation Through A Video Game, Malakai Hall
Theses & ETDs
Pollinator populations are in decline globally. Pollinator gardens, even small ones, play a vital role in supporting urban pollinator populations. The beneficial effects of pollinator gardens are increased when the gardens are planted with native species. However, figuring out which species are native to a given area and which ones are best for pollinators takes time and energy that may deter many from starting a garden. Given the teaching power of games, I have created a video game that teaches its players to establish and care for a pollinator garden with flora native to the Sarasota area. The purpose of …

Theses & ETDs
Seagrass is important to marine ecosystems because of its immense oxygen production, protection provided for and from other organisms, and influence on water quality. Humans have the ability to impact the important marine plant seagrass in several ways. One of the damaging ways that have widespread effects is through propeller scars formed by boats. South of Tampa Bay, the smaller Sarasota Bay has experienced several seagrass restoration projects over the past decades as a result of propeller scarring. This study aimed to determine the number of scars, as well as the hot and cold spots of scarring, and visually analyze …
To Boldly Go From Zine To Ao3: A Study Of Fanfiction Culture In The Star Trek Fandom, Victoria Reep
To Boldly Go From Zine To Ao3: A Study Of Fanfiction Culture In The Star Trek Fandom, Victoria Reep
Theses & ETDs
Fanfiction, or the practice of writing fiction about characters from a specific movie, TV show, or book is a practice that has existed for decades. Commonly attributed to the fanzines created by Star Trek fans in the 1960s, fanfiction has become an international phenomenon. Fanfiction is largely shared online and as a result, my research was conducted in an online setting. After speaking to eleven Star Trek fans who read or write fanfiction and reading the stories they selected for me to illustrate their interests, I have concluded that fanfiction is larger than its written works. Fanfiction is a community …
The Contention About Protection: Legal Status Of Protracted Refugees In Jordan, Bangladesh, India, And Kenya, Sierra Lamb
The Contention About Protection: Legal Status Of Protracted Refugees In Jordan, Bangladesh, India, And Kenya, Sierra Lamb
Theses & ETDs
The trend of international refugee crises lasting longer and longer leads to additional concerns and strains for host countries. Not only that, but long-term refugeehood creates continued dependence on the host nation and bars access to most durable solutions. One way to move from dependency to self-sufficiency for these refugees is to obtain a legal status that allows them to engage with their host society in a meaningful way. This study posits that the status of protracted refugees in a host state is to some degree dependent on the origins of the crisis (ethnic cleansing versus civil war) and on …
Modern Art As Propaganda: Vera Mukhina's Soviet Pavilion Sculpture At The 1937 International Exhibition, Cecile "C" De Zotti
Modern Art As Propaganda: Vera Mukhina's Soviet Pavilion Sculpture At The 1937 International Exhibition, Cecile "C" De Zotti
Theses & ETDs
Since 1851, international exhibitions have impacted millions with their awe-inducing splendor and gigantic displays of cultural and technological innovations. The 1937 iteration stands out from the crowd for the strong political implications of its displays as World War II loomed in the future, especially the tense confrontation between the German and Soviet Pavilions. This thesis considers how the U.S.S.R. used this event as an opportunity to propagate an idealized image of itself to the rest of the world via Vera Mukhina’s Industrial Worker and Collective Farm Woman, which crowned the Soviet pavilion. It more specifically examines how this sculpture functioned …
Corals, Cassiopea, And Climate Change: An Assessment Of Cassiopea Xamachana As A Model Organism For Coral-Algal Symbioses, Caroline Link
Corals, Cassiopea, And Climate Change: An Assessment Of Cassiopea Xamachana As A Model Organism For Coral-Algal Symbioses, Caroline Link
Theses & ETDs
The driving force between the high biodiversity and productivity of coral reefs is corals’ symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic dinoflagellates within the family Symbiodiniaceae. Recent studies have found that Symbiodiniaceae species differ in their physiological thermotolerances and that symbiont identity is a key determinant of a coral host’s susceptibility and acclimation to increased temperature. However, the specific thermotolerances between species and among species strains remain partially unknown. This is due in part to the difficulty associated with maintaining ex hospite symbionts in culture and sourcing intact coral-algal holobionts with a symbiont that has known physiology when in culture. Cassiopea xamachana jellyfish, …
[S]Niffing [O]Ut [S]Pecies: Detection Dogs In Conservation Work, Antonio Opio
[S]Niffing [O]Ut [S]Pecies: Detection Dogs In Conservation Work, Antonio Opio
Theses & ETDs
Biodiversity has faced severe declines since the industrial revolution, with nearly 68% of monitored species actively declining worldwide. Among methods for conservation research, Conservation Detection Dogs (CDDs) have grown in popularity since the first program began implementing them for scat detection in the 1990s. CDDs have been utilized for work including the detection of live animals, biological remnants, carcasses, plants, pathogens, poachers, and poached contraband, among a variety of applications. Their usage has assisted in the management of introduced species, monitoring of endangered species, and prevention of wildlife crime. I evaluated a set of case studies within 3 categories: introduced …
Conceptual Metaphor Games An Embodied Approach To Mathematics Pedagogy, Laura Perkins
Conceptual Metaphor Games An Embodied Approach To Mathematics Pedagogy, Laura Perkins
Theses & ETDs
In the theory of embodied cognition, mathematical activity is thought to be facili- tated in large part by epistemic “mappings” that translate bodily intuitions about the world into abstract conceptual domains. Since their popularization, these ideas have influenced discourse in mathematics education. Another currently popular topic in mathematics education is the growing evidence that learning games can enhance learning outcomes. Combining these facts, this work proposes to construct real- world or virtual games which directly map onto mathematical concepts via concep- tual metaphors. Games of this kind, which I dub conceptual metaphor games, intend to encourage learning as exploration, making …
Sleeping With The (Cuttle)Fishes: Measuring Sleep Through Arousal Threshold In The Dwarf Cuttlefish, Sepia Bandensis, Hannah Nations
Sleeping With The (Cuttle)Fishes: Measuring Sleep Through Arousal Threshold In The Dwarf Cuttlefish, Sepia Bandensis, Hannah Nations
Theses & ETDs
Sleep is a fundamental part of life, not only for humans, but for countless species. Using behavioral criteria, sleep has been found to occur in species from a large range of phyla, including Mollusca. So far it has been found that one octopus species displays sleep behaviors, and one cuttlefish species fulfills multiple behavioral criteria for sleep. This study uses Sepia bandensis, the dwarf cuttlefish, to test a remaining criterion: an elevated arousal threshold that provides evidence of sleep behavior in cuttlefish. To test arousal threshold, the magnitude of stimuli required to evoke a response, when in and out of …
Pepsi-Cola And Communion Wafers: Aesthetics Of Juxtaposition In Corita Kent’S Mid-Century Prints, Jessica Edmonds
Pepsi-Cola And Communion Wafers: Aesthetics Of Juxtaposition In Corita Kent’S Mid-Century Prints, Jessica Edmonds
Theses & ETDs
Often identified with the Pop art movement during the 1960s, Corita Kent is distinguished for her silkscreen prints that juxtapose contemporary advertising imagery with traditional biblical themes. Less well-known are her prints produced before the Pop decade, which exhibit similar juxtapositional strategies between commercial and spiritual realms. Examining prints from her mid-century oeuvre, as well as the cultural contexts with which contemporary viewers likely would have been familiar, this thesis explores the evolution of Corita’s aesthetics of juxtaposition and the possible implications of its relationship to the modernization efforts of the Catholic Church under the directives of the Second Vatican …
How Effective Are Flowerpot Snakes When It Comes To Controlling Termite Pest Populations?, Skylar Gross
How Effective Are Flowerpot Snakes When It Comes To Controlling Termite Pest Populations?, Skylar Gross
Theses & ETDs
Flowerpot snakes, Indotyphlops braminus, are a fossorial snake species that is found in many parts of the world. The snakes are known to prey on ants and termites. This experiment was designed to answer the question, are flowerpot snakes an effective form of pest control? Feeding behavior of flowerpot snakes was tested using termite workers in the conditions: substrate absent with lights off, substrate absent with lights on, substrate present with lights off, and substrate present with lights on to determine a maximum feeding rate. The flowerpot snakes ate an average of two termites per feeding event, ranging between 1.60 …
The Effects Of Climate Change On The Migration Phenology Of Juvenile Blacktip Sharks (Carcharhinus Limbatus), Victoria Goldner
The Effects Of Climate Change On The Migration Phenology Of Juvenile Blacktip Sharks (Carcharhinus Limbatus), Victoria Goldner
Theses & ETDs
Seasonal temperature change has been shown to be a key driver of migration for many species. Increasing ocean temperatures have been observed to cause shifts in the range and timing of migratory movements in marine animals, including sharks. For harvested species, these behavioral changes could have significant implications for fisheries management. The blacktip shark (Carcharhinus limbatus) is one of the Gulf of Mexico’s most recreationally and commercially important species. Terra Ceia Bay, FL, is a nursery for blacktip sharks that has been extensively studied. In the late 1990s through early 2000s, young-of-the-year sharks were found to reside in the bay …

Pediatric Heavy Metal Toxicity: A Systematic Review Of The Association Between In-Utero Exposure To Heavy Metals And Behavioral/Neurological Problems In The Affected Children, Isabella Hochburger
Theses & ETDs
The rates of children diagnosed with developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have exponentially increased over the last 20 years, which has placed a heavy burden on both caregivers and psychiatrists. The neurobiology of these disorders has been increasingly well studied, but the root causes of these disorders remain poorly understood by the neuroscience/psychiatric community. Most neuroscientists suggest a combination of genetic and environmental factors are to blame, but the question remains: why are these disorders becoming so prevalent in our society, now more than ever before? One proposed genetic-environmental factor is heavy …

The Behavioral Response Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus Zimmerman 1780) To Scented Bait Stations, Nicholas Warmington
Theses & ETDs
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are large, herbivorous ungulates which are known to be selective browsers. They can heavily modify the botanical landscape of an area if their population size becomes too large. White-tailed deer populations are growing too fast, and overpopulation is becoming a serious issue across the United States. Deer will heavily browse saplings and herbs, causing issues with forest regeneration and the protection of endangered herbs. Overpopulation of deer has also become a major issue due to the rise of zoonoses and deer vehicle collisions due to development. In the present study, use of scents such as predator …
