Mortality Risk Associated With Urban Land Use For Adult Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Adamanteus), Mya Wiles

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Snakes have been a traditionally under-represented organism in urban ecology, but they face similar, if not greater challenges in the face of growing urban sprawl. Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus adamanteus, EDBs) are under consideration for listing under the Endangered Species Act due to population declines resulting from historical human persecution and habitat loss. This study used radio-telemetry data from a long-term monitoring project of adult EDBs on a developed sea island in South Carolina, USA. I reclassified a National Land Cover Dataset to reflect relative mortality risk for snakes attempting to move through the landscape. High-risk cover types …

Dual Antiplatelet Therapy With Ticagrelor Vs Clopidogrel In Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome, Binh Vu Jan 2022

Dual Antiplatelet Therapy With Ticagrelor Vs Clopidogrel In Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome, Binh Vu

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background: Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) is an effective secondary prevention and an essential component of treatment after patients suffering from acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Recently, clinicians rapidly switched to DAPT with ticagrelor as the preferred treatment option after it was introduced in 2011. Compared to clopidogrel, ticagrelor is not a prodrug and does not require metabolic activation to inhibit the platelet P2Y12 receptor. It is the first reversible oral P2Y12 receptor antagonist; and its effect on platelet inhibition is more pronounced compared to clopidogrel.

Purpose: The purpose of this comprehensive review was to evaluate the efficacy and safety …

As a minimally invasive treatment, it significantly reduces the morbidity and mortality for geriatric patients, as well as healthcare costs overall.

The purpose of this analysis is to understand the utility of thermal ablation for the treatment of invasive ductal carcinoma. Specifically in the context of elderly patients, it is determined if this treatment modality is superior to traditional breast conserving …

Memory For Emotional Expressions In Adults With Acquired Brain Injuries, Lauren Jeanne Radigan Jan 2022

Memory For Emotional Expressions In Adults With Acquired Brain Injuries, Lauren Jeanne Radigan

Wayne State University Dissertations

Introduction: Memory for emotions expressed by others forms the continuity that characterizes unique and intimate relationships. Successful memory for facial expressions requires the ability to remember the identity of the face (who showed the emotion) as well as the emotion (which emotion they showed). People with acquired brain injuries (ABI) frequently have problems with social cognition, which involves understanding cues that communicate emotional and interpersonal information. ABI is commonly associated with trouble perceiving emotional expressions and recognizing the identity of faces; however, research on memory for emotions after ABI is sparse. This study examined cognitive and emotional characteristics that contribute …

Anaerobic Digestion Of Cereal Rye Cover Crop, Liangcheng Yang, Lucas D. Lamont, John C. Sedbrook, Nicholas J. Heller, David E. Kopsell

Faculty Publications - Agriculture

The rapid growth of cover crop planting area in the U.S. helps with erosion control, soil health, control of greenhouse gases, and also provides abundant biomass for the production of bioenergy and bioproducts. Given the cover crops’ compositional heterogeneity and variability, a tolerate platform technology such as anaerobic digestion (AD) is preferred but has not been widely used for cover crop biorefining. This study evaluated the biogas and methane yields from six cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crops grown in the Midwest, using both bench- and pilot-scale anaerobic digesters. The effects of two critical factors, the total solids (TS) …

Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Mercury In Upper And Lower Red Lake Walleye, Tyler Orgon Jan 2022

Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Mercury In Upper And Lower Red Lake Walleye, Tyler Orgon

Biology Graduate Theses

Mercury is a global pollutant that is released into our environment by natural and anthropogenic processes resulting in extensive studies conducted on mercury cycling in aquatic ecosystems which has led to the issuance of human-health-based fish-consumption advisories. We examined total mercury concentrations in Walleye Sander vitreus from Upper and Lower Red Lakes, located in north central Minnesota, between 2019 and 2020. Upper and Lower Red Lake form a contiguous water body consisting of two large (483.1 and 665.6 km2, respectively) basins that are naturally connected by a 1.4 km-wide strait. Both basins are important fisheries for recreation, subsistence, and commercial …

Using A Token Economy To Treat Escape-Maintained Problem Behavior Without Extinction, Natalie R. Andzik, Elle Smith, Nancy Neef Jan 2022

Using A Token Economy To Treat Escape-Maintained Problem Behavior Without Extinction, Natalie R. Andzik, Elle Smith, Nancy Neef

NIU Bibliography

The use of extinction procedures when treating escape-maintained problem behavior can be undesirable and impractical for practitioners to use. To mitigate the risks associated with escape extinction, we explored the effectiveness of a delayed reinforcement token system without the use of extinction in school and home settings to treat escape-maintained problem behavior of students with autism spectrum disorder. In lieu of escape extinction (e.g., blocking), the researchers implemented a 30 s break contingent on problem behaviors and a token (to be exchanged at the end of the session) contingent on compliance. The results of a multiple probe design indicated substantial …

Exosomes Derived From Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Mediate Perineural Invasion: Implications For Therapeutic Intervention, Cole Knoblich Jan 2022

Exosomes Derived From Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Mediate Perineural Invasion: Implications For Therapeutic Intervention, Cole Knoblich

Dissertations and Theses

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most globally diagnosed cancers and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Metastatic CRC (mCRC) significantly impacts patient outcome and diminishes overall survival outcomes. Despite advances in therapeutic treatment, the 5-year survival rate for mCRC is < 20% and several patients fail to have a beneficial response to available treatments. This could be attributed to alternative routes of mCRC in which current treatments are unable to block these routes of cancer spread. One such alternative route involves the spread of cancer along the nerve termed perineural invasion (PNI) which is an independent prognostic factor in CRC. The tumor microenvironment (TME) is comprised of several different cell types that have been investigated for their role in cancer pathogenesis. Several studies have shown that cells of the TME can provide a supportive environment that allows for the growth and spread of cancer. Primary focus has been placed on cancer, stromal, and immune cells in the TME, but the role of neuronal cells in cancer pathogenesis is still unknown. Since cells of the TME can communicate through the secretion of exosomes, cancer-derived exosomes have gained widespread interest for their role in cancer pathogenesis. This study investigated how CRC-derived exosomes prime neuronal cells and contribute to PNI. By utilizing transwell co-culture systems and conditioned media experiments, we were able to determine that CRC cells secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs) that induce neuronal cell differentiation and growth, and inhibit apoptosis. Furthermore, utilization of an exosome inhibitor revealed that blocking exosome production in CRC cells could attenuate these affects. CRC- derived exosomes were collected utilizing a modified-iodixanol gradient technique and further characterization revealed an enriched pool of exosomes in fractions. Furthermore, proteomic analysis showed several proteins contained in CRC-derived exosomes that were involved in neuronal cell differentiation and growth. Lastly, treatment of CRC cells with the pharmacological tool Veratridine (VTD) was able to attenuate neuronal cell differentiation and growth and alter the proteomic profiles found in CRC-derived exosomes. In addition, VTD treatment slowed the spread of CRC along the sciatic nerve of an NIH-III nude mouse model of PNI.

An Appetite For Crime: Case Studies Of Cannibalism And The Criminological Theories That Explain It, Eponine Romo Jan 2022

An Appetite For Crime: Case Studies Of Cannibalism And The Criminological Theories That Explain It, Eponine Romo

Undergraduate Honors Theses

One of the most important aspects of studying crime is identifying how and why certain crimes happen. There are several questions one should ask: Why did this event happen? What caused this to happen? How could it have been stopped? Criminologists use various theories to seek the answer to these questions regarding diverse types of crimes from petty crimes, such as stealing a pack of gum to major, violent crimes, such as cannibalism, the latter of which will be analyzed here. The goal is to prevent these crimes from happening in the future by identifying why they are happening now. …

To help instructors and students who may be unfamiliar with the history of East Asia and its transimperial exchanges with the Anglophone world, the creators of the “Transimperial Networks and East Asia” lesson plan cluster built this timeline, which includes some major historical events from the fifteenth to the twentieth century. This timeline comes out of our many discussions about the methodological issues that arise when the field of Victorian Studies seeks to expand its traditional geographical scope. As we quickly realized in the process of creating our cluster, the usual boundaries of the long nineteenth century (the French Revolution …
