Lupinus Angustifolius - Environmental Weed Risk Assessment 2022, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Environmental Weed Risk Assessments

Introducing new plants to an area may have both positive and negative effects on the environment, economy and community. To minimise the negative environmental impact of introducing new agricultural species, DPIRD conducts a risk assessment procedure based on widely accepted scientific standards. This report assesses Narrowleaf lupins (Lupinus angustifolius). Narrowleaf lupins (white lupins, Australian sweet lupins) is an annual pulse crop first domesticated in Western Australia (WA). Farmers in WA produce about 80% of total world production and are the only significant exporters of lupin grain. Lupins are well suited to the deep, acid sandy soils that occur over large …

This study investigated the development of maternal identity among maternally bereaved first-time pregnant women over 17 weeks of gestation, who lost their mother more than 12 months before their pregnancy. The aim of this study was to explore the relationships among attachment-related avoidance, attachment-related anxiety, maternal identity, and grief reactions. Participants were recruited online via announcements on email listservs, social media, bereavement forums, and pregnancy forums. A cross-sectional study was conducted among N = 250 primigravida women who experienced the death of their mother at least a year prior to their pregnancy. Data were collected using online self-report measures. Attachment-related …

Finding Optimal Cayley Map Embeddings Using Genetic Algorithms, Jacob Buckelew Jan 2022

Finding Optimal Cayley Map Embeddings Using Genetic Algorithms, Jacob Buckelew

Honors Program Theses

Genetic algorithms are a commonly used metaheuristic search method aimed at solving complex optimization problems in a variety of fields. These types of algorithms lend themselves to problems that can incorporate stochastic elements, which allows for a wider search across a search space. However, the nature of the genetic algorithm can often cause challenges regarding time-consumption. Although the genetic algorithm may be widely applicable to various domains, it is not guaranteed that the algorithm will outperform other traditional search methods in solving problems specific to particular domains. In this paper, we test the feasibility of genetic algorithms in solving a …

The Influence Of Human Facial Obstruction On Canine (Canis Familiaris) Begging Preferences, Natalie George Jan 2022

The Influence Of Human Facial Obstruction On Canine (Canis Familiaris) Begging Preferences, Natalie George

Honors Program Theses

Research on the ability of dogs (Canis familiaris) to recognize human attentional states has shown that dogs are inconsistent in successfully begging to humans who can see them. The current study expanded on this research in relation to the ongoing pandemic and analyzed whether dogs preferred begging to masked, unmasked, or blindfolded individuals. We recruited dog owners from a small liberal arts college and the surrounding area. Dogs chose to beg for a treat from a researcher in one of three separate testing conditions: no facial occlusion versus blindfolded, masked versus blindfolded, or no facial occlusion versus masked. The study …

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects

An experimental, numerical, research and design investigation is conducted to formulate a nonlethal avian deterrent system for aquacultural applications. As the ocean is itself a dynamic system, so too must its passengers be. This ethos is carried throughout each stage of the design process described herewith. The true cost is outlined in time, energy, and dollars to account for every facet involved. The team driven decisions seek balance between the meticulous selection of materials favorable for their properties and design specifications prescribed by customer and sponsor requirements. Each members initial concepts are outlined and weighed by proven and practiced engineering …

Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo Jan 2022

Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

I present evidence of two priesthoods in the Jewish Bible: an Aaronite priesthood, held by Aaron and passed down through his descendants; and a higher Mushite priesthood, held not only by Moses and his descendants but also by other worthy individuals, such as Joshua, an Ephraimite. The Mushite priests were centered in Shiloh, where Joshua settled the Ark of the Covenant, while the Aaronites became dominant in the Jerusalem temple. Like Joshua, the prophet Lehi, a descendant of the northern tribe of Manasseh, held the higher priesthood. His ministry, as recounted in the Book of Mormon, demonstrates four characteristics that …

Could Joseph Smith Have Drawn On Ancient Manuscripts When He Translated The Story Of Enoch?: Recent Updates On A Persistent Question, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw, Ryan Dahle Jan 2022

Could Joseph Smith Have Drawn On Ancient Manuscripts When He Translated The Story Of Enoch?: Recent Updates On A Persistent Question, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw, Ryan Dahle

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In this article, we offer a general critique of scholarship that has argued for Joseph Smith’s reliance on 1 Enoch or other ancient pseudepigrapha for the Enoch chapters in the Book of Moses. Our findings highlight the continued difficulties of scholars to sustain such arguments credibly. Following this general critique, we describe the current state of research relating to what Salvatore Cirillo took to be the strongest similarity between Joseph Smith’s chapters on Enoch and the Qumran Book of Giants — namely the resemblance between the name Mahawai in the Book of Giants and Mahujah/Mahijah in Joseph Smith’s Enoch account. …

In God’S House, There Are Many Rooms: A University Minister Reflects Upon Fratelli Tutti., Melanie-Prejean Sullivan

Faculty Publications

For over fifty years, Roman Catholics who are interreligious leaders have been guided by the Second Vatican Council document, Nostra Aetate. The author, a retired university lay minister in the United States, was one such interreligious leader who worked with students, faculty, and staff of all faiths and none on a small Catholic campus to create an atmosphere open to diversity, inclusion, and respect for all. Her office facilitated campus programs that encouraged service, dialogue, and spiritual growth. In twenty years, campus ministry involvement grew from three dozen primarily Catholic students to over 400 students of many different faiths. …

Subjects depicted within these works of art were carefully selected with a goal of maintaining interest in an audience with emotions ranging from neutral to strong dislike towards insects and arachnids. This exhibition as a whole is designed to bridge the gap between a negative perception of insects and …

An Overview Of Integrated Pest Management In Greenhouse Systems, Kateri Cavanagh Jan 2022

An Overview Of Integrated Pest Management In Greenhouse Systems, Kateri Cavanagh

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

Greenhouses are technological advancements that have existed since the first century. Human life and the field of agriculture have greatly improved with their invention. However, greenhouses come with their own set of challenges. One of the biggest issues with greenhouse systems is the presence of large pest populations. This is due to the ample food and water supply along with the relative stability of greenhouses. Pests in greenhouses are usually dealt with through the application of chemical pesticides. However, integrated pest management (IPM) is gaining traction for use in greenhouse systems. This overview will cover the history of greenhouses and …

A Brown Buffalo’S Observations On Color(Blindness), Legal History, And Racial Justice In The Rocky Mountain West, Tom I. Romero

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This essay is a series of three observations about interrogating and complicating the meaning of color for all of us who call the Rocky Mountain West home. Published as part of the University of Utah Law Review’s annual symposium asking legal academics and law practitioners to 'tell our stories', this essay is designed to highlight the importance of racial consciousness in the legal geography of the Rocky Mountain West. These observations are divided into three reflections. In the first, I explore what has long been the defining feature of race relations in the Rocky Mountain West—the persistent tension between the …

Arginine Catabolism And Polyamine Biosynthesis Pathway Disparities Within Francisella Tularensis Subpopulations, Yinshi Yue, Bhanwar Lal Puniya, Tomáš Helikar, Benjamin Girardo, Steven H. Hinrichs, Marilyn A. Larson Jan 2022

Arginine Catabolism And Polyamine Biosynthesis Pathway Disparities Within Francisella Tularensis Subpopulations, Yinshi Yue, Bhanwar Lal Puniya, Tomáš Helikar, Benjamin Girardo, Steven H. Hinrichs, Marilyn A. Larson

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Francisella tularensis is a highly infectious zoonotic pathogen with as few as 10 organisms causing tularemia, a disease that is fatal if untreated. Although F. tularensis subspecies tularensis (type A) and subspecies holarctica (type B) share over 99.5% average nucleotide identity, notable differences exist in genomic organization and pathogenicity. The type A clade has been further divided into subtypes A.I and A.II, with A.I strains being recognized as some of the most virulent bacterial pathogens known. In this study, we report on major disparities that exist between the F. tularensis subpopulations in arginine catabolism and subsequent polyamine biosynthesis. The genes …

Species-Specific Responses To Landscape Features Shaped Genomic Structure Within Alaska Galliformes, Sarah A. Sonsthagen, Robert E. Wilson, Sandra L. Talbot Jan 2022

Species-Specific Responses To Landscape Features Shaped Genomic Structure Within Alaska Galliformes, Sarah A. Sonsthagen, Robert E. Wilson, Sandra L. Talbot

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Aim: Connectivity is vital to the resiliency of populations to environmental change and stochastic events, especially for cold-adapted species as Arctic and alpine tundra habitats retract as the climate warms. We examined the influence of past and current landscapes on genomic connectivity in cold-adapted galliformes as a critical first step to assess the vulnerability of Alaska ptarmigan and grouse to environmental change. We hypothesize that the mosaic of physical features and habitat within Alaska promoted the formation of genetic structure across species.

Location: Alaska, United States of America.

Taxa: Ptarmigan and Grouse (Galliformes: Tetraoninae).

Methods: We collected double digest restriction-site- …

Immature Bull Shark Habitat Use And Residency In The Manatee River, A Non-Thermally Altered Nursery Area, Cecilia Hampton Jan 2022

Immature Bull Shark Habitat Use And Residency In The Manatee River, A Non-Thermally Altered Nursery Area, Cecilia Hampton

Theses & ETDs

The Manatee River is a non-thermally altered estuarine river that flows into the southern edge of Tampa Bay. Prior studies suggest that temperature and salinity are the primary factors driving juvenile bull shark habitat use. However, previously-studied nurseries at latitudes similar to the Manatee River have been in thermally-altered rivers. The objective was to examine immature bull shark use of this habitat in relation to variation in temperature and salinity. A network of acoustic receivers was deployed within the Manatee River to track movements of acoustically-tagged juvenile bull sharks (n=20). Incorporating data from New College’s temperature/salinity loggers and from USGS …

Reducing Inconsistencies In Our Attitudes Towards Animals, Alicia Bednar Jan 2022

Reducing Inconsistencies In Our Attitudes Towards Animals, Alicia Bednar

Theses & ETDs

Why do we classify some animals as disgusting pests and some as beloved pets? Although many people do not enjoy recognizing it, there are many obvious inconsistencies concerning the way in which we perceive, categorize, and consequently treat animals based on our relationships with them. The same animal might be classified as both a potential pest or pet, depending on the environment and context it is placed in, such as rats and snakes. Others may fall into categories that make them lab subjects or food. The categories we place animals in are automatically mentally associated with varying degrees of moral …

Physiological Indicators Of Menstrual Cycle Phase: A Two-Part Study On Developing A Method Of Menstrual Cycle Phase Determination And Assessment Of Menstrual Cycle Impacts On Brain Activation, Anna Feldbush Jan 2022

Physiological Indicators Of Menstrual Cycle Phase: A Two-Part Study On Developing A Method Of Menstrual Cycle Phase Determination And Assessment Of Menstrual Cycle Impacts On Brain Activation, Anna Feldbush

Theses & ETDs

The menstrual cycle, and associated variations in hormone status, are a powerful moderator of both behavioral and physiological variables. However, current methods of determining menstrual cycle phase in research are largely unreliable and often cumbersome to put to use in a study. This two-part study examined two bio-markers of menstrual cycle phase for the application in research. Study 1 assessed the viability of salivary ferning - a crystal pattern formed in dried saliva that is linked to ovarian hormone status -- in identifying menstrual cycle phase. The two sampling types used in this study demonstrated that although salivary ferning patterns …

Ruining The Remake: An Investigation Of Fan Expectations For Live-Action Adaptations, Nailah Davis Jan 2022

Ruining The Remake: An Investigation Of Fan Expectations For Live-Action Adaptations, Nailah Davis

Theses & ETDs

This thesis investigates fan dissatisfaction with live-action film adaptations. Fans show displeasure with live-action adaptations that stray too far from the source material and claim that “unfaithful” movies ruin the original text. Adapters and Adaptation Studies scholars attribute fan dissatisfaction to their engagement with fidelity criticism: the comparison between an adaptation and its source material, where one considers the source material to be the superior art form. I argue that filmmakers cause fan dissatisfaction with live-action adaptations through contradictory marketing practices. Filmmakers and scholars encourage fans to judge adaptations independently of the original texts, but film advertisements and movie trailers …

Educating The Bodymind In Dickens’S Our Mutual Friend And Mccaffrey’S The Ship Who Sang, Maggie O'Rourke Jan 2022

Educating The Bodymind In Dickens’S Our Mutual Friend And Mccaffrey’S The Ship Who Sang, Maggie O'Rourke

Theses & ETDs

My thesis asks how we as humans relate to the world through the “body” and “mind or “bodymind.” The “bodymind” can be explored through good and bad education, as one way we relate to the world is through knowledge. But, there is also the knowledge of our body through the senses which is our first form of knowing. As we gain knowledge, we make sense of our initial sensations of being and from these processes we form our-Self. Using Charles Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend and Hard Times, through the lens of Paulo Freire’s educational existentialist theory of knowledge; I consider …
