Brain Health Faculty Research
Background: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous susceptibility loci for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, utilizing GWAS and multi-omics data to identify high-confidence AD risk genes (ARGs) and druggable targets that can guide development of new therapeutics for patients suffering from AD has heretofore not been successful. Methods: To address this critical problem in the field, we have developed a network-based artificial intelligence framework that is capable of integrating multi-omics data along with human protein–protein interactome networks to accurately infer accurate drug targets impacted by GWAS-identified variants to identify new therapeutics. When applied to AD, this approach integrates GWAS findings, …

Obesity And The Development Of Lung Fibrosis, Xia Guo, Christudas Sunil, Guoqing Qian
Cellular and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Obesity is an epidemic worldwide and the obese people suffer from a range of respiratory complications including fibrotic changes in the lung. The influence of obesity on the lung is multifactorial, which is related to both mechanical injury and various inflammatory mediators produced by excessive adipose tissues, and infiltrated immune cells. Adiposity causes increased production of inflammatory mediators, for example, cytokines, chemokines, and adipokines, both locally and in the systemic circulation, thereby rendering susceptibility to respiratory diseases, and altered responses. Lung fibrosis is closely related to chronic inflammation in the lung. Current data suggest a link between lung fibrosis and …

Women Of Power: Mapping The Spiritual Journeys Of Caribbean Women Across Regional Fiction As Portrayed In The Book Of Night Women, Texaco, And Erzulie's Skirt, Natalie Sandy D'Auvergne-Lamotte
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Contemporary Caribbean fiction serves as an active agent for refining and expanding definitions of Caribbeanness. This study aims at demonstrating how Caribbean writers use representations of Caribbean women to contribute to an opaquer regional vision that argues against homogenizing ideas of Caribbeanness. The Book of Night Women, Texaco, and Erzulie’s Skirt, respectively written by Marlon James (Jamaica), Patrick Chamoiseau (Martinique), and Anna-Maurine Lara (Dominican Republic), work by making space for more historically accurate and locally representative images of Caribbeanness through the Caribbean women they portray. Though characters live on different islands (at different times), they still manage to represent …
Fabc Theology Of The Laity And Its Relevance For Forming Leaders In Asia’S Local Churches, Charles Bertille
Fabc Theology Of The Laity And Its Relevance For Forming Leaders In Asia’S Local Churches, Charles Bertille
Loyola Papers
This paper examines the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC)’s Theology of the Laity and its relevance for forming leaders in the local Churches of Asia. Grounded in the ecclesiology of the People of God articulated by Second Vatican Council, the study highlights the dignity, charisms, and co-responsibility of the baptized in the Church’s mission. It analyzes how the Institute of Formation–Fondacio (IFF) Asia’s basic formation program embodies the FABC vision of a “new way of being Church” through holistic, communitarian, and missionary formation. The paper argues that empowering the laity through contextual formation fosters discipleship, leadership, and active participation …
The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr.
The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr.
Loyola Papers
Advocating the crafting of inculturated catechisms, this paper calls for a pedagogy of faith built not from the desks of catechetical authorities but from the ground. In this pedagogical renewal, necessitated by changing times and circumstances, the paper finds a rallying point and guiding principle in the FABC’s call for inculturation understood as “dialogue.” At the same time, it identifies a number of ongoing challenges that hinder this process, including notions and methodologies of inculturation that can be unilateral and amount to a kind of imposition on the receiving culture, which possesses its own customs and practices. The paper then …

Loyola Papers
In this paper, the author shares his experiences of working with and for the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences in this important area, thus giving us a picture of how an FABC office operates. The seminars organized and papers produced reveal how the FABC-OC has been true to its mission to renew and empower the clergy in the Asian context to deal with the contemporary challenges in their priestly life and ministry. The paper also identifies a number of vital prospects that the FABC-OC is currently aiming at towards the renewal of the clergy in Asia, as well as to …
The Fabc Vision Of Youth As Evangelizers In Asia, Particularly In The Archdiocese Of Goa, India, Antonetta Pereira
The Fabc Vision Of Youth As Evangelizers In Asia, Particularly In The Archdiocese Of Goa, India, Antonetta Pereira
Loyola Papers
This study examines the vision of youth as evangelizers in Asia as articulated by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), with particular reference to the pastoral context of the Church in Goa. Grounded in the theological themes of communio ecclesiology, evangelization, and missional participation, the paper argues that young people should be recognized not merely as recipients of pastoral care but as active agents of the Church’s missionary mission. Considering the social and cultural realities affecting Asian youth, the study highlights the importance of accompaniment, formation in mission, and a relevant spirituality. It proposes practical pastoral directions to empower …

Low total energy expenditure (TEE, MJ/d) has been a hypothesized risk factor for weight gain, but repeatability of TEE, a critical variable in longitudinal studies of energy balance, is understudied. We examine repeated doubly labeled water (DLW) measurements of TEE in 348 adults and 47 children from the IAEA DLW Database (mean ± SD time interval: 1.9 ± 2.9 y) to assess repeatability of TEE, and to examine if TEE adjusted for age, sex, fat-free mass, and fat mass is associated with changes in weight or body composition. Here, we report that repeatability of TEE is high for adults, but …

(1) Background: This study investigates influential risk factors for predicting 30-day readmission to hospital for Campylobacter infections (CI). (2) Methods: We linked general practitioner and hospital admission records of 13,006 patients with CI in Wales (1990–2015). An approach called TF-zR (term frequency-zRelevance) technique was presented to evaluates how relevant a clinical term is to a patient in a cohort characterized by coded health records. The zR is a supervised term-weighting metric to assign weight to a term based on relative frequencies of the term across different classes. Cost-sensitive classifier with swarm optimization and weighted subset learning was integrated to identify …

Reinvigoration of antitumor immunity remains an unmet challenge. Our retrospective analyses revealed that cancer patients who took antihistamines during immunotherapy treatment had significantly improved survival. We uncovered that histamine and histamine receptor H1 (HRH1) are frequently increased in the tumor microenvironment and induce T cell dysfunction. Mechanistically, HRH1-activated macrophages polarize toward an M2-like immunosuppressive phenotype with increased expression of the immune checkpoint VISTA, rendering T cells dysfunctional. HRH1 knockout or antihistamine treatment reverted macrophage immunosuppression, revitalized T cell cytotoxic function, and restored immunotherapy response. Allergy, via the histamine-HRH1 axis, facilitated tumor growth and induced immunotherapy resistance in mice and humans. …

From densely vegetated marshes to sparse patches of playa vegetation, native plants of Great Salt Lake drive healthy wetlands. They provide habitat, cover, and food for the many birds, amphibians, insects, and mammals that call these wetlands home. Disturbances to these wetlands, such as treating invasive Phragmites australis or building dikes, can impact native plant communities. Reestablishing native vegetation is critical to rebuilding healthy wetlands. Though there is still much to be learned, here we have summarized our knowledge of the "what, where, and how" of native plant revegetation in these wetlands, specifically using native seed. This guide is intended …

Conventional angiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), regulate both pathological and physiological angiogenesis indiscriminately, and their inhibitors may elicit adverse side effects. Secretogranin III (Scg3) was recently reported to be a diabetes-restricted VEGF-independent angiogenic factor, but the disease selectivity of Scg3 in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a retinal disease in preterm infants with concurrent pathological and physiological angiogenesis, was not defined. Here, using oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) mice, a surrogate model of ROP, we quantified an exclusive binding of Scg3 to diseased versus healthy developing neovessels that contrasted sharply with the ubiquitous binding of VEGF. Functional immunohistochemistry visualized …

Combined methylmalonic acidemia and homocystinuria (cblC) is the most common inborn error of intracellular cobalamin metabolism and due to mutations in Methylmalonic Aciduria type C and Homocystinuria (MMACHC). Recently, mutations in the transcriptional regulators HCFC1 and RONIN (THAP11) were shown to result in cellular phenocopies of cblC. Since HCFC1/RONIN jointly regulate MMACHC, patients with mutations in these factors suffer from reduced MMACHC expression and exhibit a cblC-like disease. However, additional de-regulated genes and the resulting pathophysiology is unknown. Therefore, we have generated mouse models of this disease. In addition to exhibiting loss of Mmachc, metabolic perturbations, and developmental defects previously …

Can High Density, Short Duration Grazing Replace Fire In A South African Mesic Grassland?, N. M. Chonco, S. C. Nkuna
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
High density grazing (HDG), defined as the concentration of many livestock on a small area for a short period of time has become increasingly popular in the South African mesic grassland yet little is known about it impact. HDG is usually applied without fire, based on the assertion that it is a key contributor to desertification of grasslands. However, fire plays an important role in the development and growth of most South African mesic grassland plant species, as it stimulates resprouting and reduces competition for light. The aim of this study was to determine the impacts of high density grazing …

Back To The Roots - Do Traditional Maasai Management Strategies Work Towards Resilience Against Unpredictable Rainfall And Grazing Pressure In Northern Tanzania?, S. A. Baumgartner, A. C. Treydte
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Despite the importance for people´s livelihoods, many semi-arid African savannas are prone to heavy degradation due to overutilization by people, livestock and increased climate variability. Rangeland management, such as transhumance and deferred grazing systems, practiced by the Maasai in northern Tanzania, can be useful in combating the negative consequences of overuse and increasing rainfall variability. But little is known on how different rangeland regimes, practiced by the Maasai, impacts the productivity of these rangelands.
We collected data on regrowth rates under different rangeland management regimes (rainy season grazing land, dry season grazing land, and seasonal exclosures), different harvest rates (month, …

An Integrated Assessment And Management Optimization System For Grazinglands, D. Toledo, J. E. Herrick, S. Goslee, M. Sanderson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Rangelands and pasturelands are often assessed using different methodologies. The Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health and Pasture Condition Scoring methodologies, two techniques used widely across the USA, were developed for rangelands and pasturelands respectively. These two grazingland assessment techniques were determined to be complementary and if integrated could provide an optimized approach to measure grazinglands without regards to specific use (i.e. range or pasture). We present an improved grazingland assessment protocol that merges indicators and attributes from Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health and Pasture Condition Scoring methodologies. This Integrated Grazingland Assessment (IGA) approach allows evaluators to assess site conditions and …

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are important for neonatal development and health. One mechanism by which omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids exert their effects is through their metabolism into oxylipins and specialized pro-resolving mediators. However, the influence of oxylipins on fetal growth is not well understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify oxylipins present in maternal and umbilical cord plasma and investigate their relationship with infant growth. Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry was used to quantify oxylipin levels in plasma collected at the time of delivery. Spearman’s correlations highlighted significant correlations between metabolite levels and infant growth. They …

Plant-based and animal-based protein intake have differential effects on various aging-related health outcomes, but less is known about the health effect of isocaloric substitution of plant-based and animal-based protein. This systematic review summarized current evidence of the isocaloric substitutional effect of plant-based and animal-based protein on aging-related health outcomes. PubMed and Embase databases were searched for epidemiologic observational studies published in English up to 15 March 2021. Studies that included adults ≥18 years old; use of a nutritional substitution model to define isocaloric substitution of plant protein and animal protein; health outcomes covering mortality, aging-related diseases or indices; and reported …

Among major vertebrate groups, anurans (frogs and toads) are understudied with regard to their visual systems, and little is known about variation among species that differ in ecology. We sampled North American anurans representing diverse evolutionary and life histories that likely possess visual systems adapted to meet different ecological needs. Using standard molecular techniques, visual opsin genes, which encode the protein component of visual pigments, were obtained from anuran retinas. Additionally, we extracted the visual opsins from publicly available genome and transcriptome assemblies, further increasing the phylogenetic and ecological diversity of our dataset to 33 species in total. We found …
