Principles Of Holistic Resource Management: Investing In Self-Education, Pete Bauman

SDSU Beef Day 2022 Summary Publication

Study Description:

First developed as a concept for approaching grazing resources management by Alan Savory in the 1970’s as a means of combating poor grazing practices, the concept of Holistic Management has evolved in the modern era to Holistic Resource Management, or in some cases “Wholistic” Resource Management, suggesting a more inclusive approach to overall planning and assessment beyond developing a sustainable grazing plan.

In simplified terms, a complete Holistic Resource Management plan for an agricultural businesses ultimately embraces a core concept that centers on the original ‘Triple Bottom Line’ accounting philosophy where the three “P’s” of profit, people, and …

Cold Shock Induces A Terminal Investment Reproductive Response In C. Elegans, Leah Gulyas, Jennifer R. Powell Jan 2022

Cold Shock Induces A Terminal Investment Reproductive Response In C. Elegans, Leah Gulyas, Jennifer R. Powell

Biology Faculty Publications

Challenges from environmental stressors have a profound impact on many life-history traits of an organism, including reproductive strategy. Examples across multiple taxa have demonstrated that maternal reproductive investment resulting from stress can improve offspring survival; a form of matricidal provisioning when death appears imminent is known as terminal investment. Here we report a reproductive response in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans upon exposure to acute cold shock at 2 °C, whereby vitellogenic lipid movement from the soma to the germline appears to be massively upregulated at the expense of parental survival. This response is dependent on functional TAX-2; TAX-4 cGMP-gated channels …

A Retrospective Review Of The Natural Progression Of Cardiac Vegetation, Mehakmeet Bhatia, Saleha Asghar, Roomana Khan, Vivek Kak

Infectious Diseases Articles

INTRODUCTION: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening condition with an annual mortality of up to 40%. Vegetations are the hallmark of IE, however, factors that affect the initial size and changes in size remain unclear. Our study aims to investigate the natural history of cardiac vegetation, including changes in size and/or resolution with adequate treatment, and to analyze factors that influence size and potential for persistence.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 102 patients admitted with native-valve endocarditis at Henry Ford Health System from September 1, 2017, to June 30, 2019. We included patients treated with six …

Modeling Defect Mediated Color-Tunability In Leds With Eu-Doped Gan-Based Active Layers, Hayley J. Austin, Brandon Mitchell, Dolf Timmerman, Jun Tatebayashi, Shuhei Ichikawa, Yasufumi Fujiwara, Volkmar Dierolf

Physics & Engineering Faculty Publications

Color tunability from red to orange to yellow has been demonstrated in GaN-based LED devices with Eu-doped GaN layers as the active region. Under current injection, this is achieved by varying the current density and the pulse conditions. The underlying mechanism behind this color tunability is a redistribution of energy among the D-5(J) states of a Eu3+ ion. This energy shuffling is facilitated by a local defect that has been neglected in previous modeling work. Including this defect allows for a quantitative prediction of the relative time-averaged populations of the Eu3+ ion's D-5(0) and D-5(1) states. Extracting, from experimental results, …

How Capuchin Monkeys Use Their Semi-Prehensile Tails, Madhur Mangalam, Callum F. Ross, Patricia Izar, Elisabetta Visalberghi, Dorothy M. Fragaszy

Journal Articles

Among primates, prehensile/semi-prehensile tails have evolved independently in the families Atelidae and Cebidae of the infraorder Platyrrhini (Neotropical monkeys). They facilitate maintaining stability during locomotion on thin, flexible branches and while reaching for food on challenging substrates. How a prehensile/semi-prehensile tail is coordinated with the hind limbs to facilitate controlled, flexible adoption of postures remains unknown. In an experimental set-up in the wild, we induced capuchin monkeys to adopt a tail-assisted, head-down tripodal posture to reach for food, documenting from slow-motion video recordings (120 fps) both qualitative changes in the monkeys’ positional behaviour – the relative orientation of their limbs …

Early Elementary Students’ Use Of Shape And Location Schemas When Embedding And Disembedding, Laura Bofferding, Lizhen Chen, Sezai Kocabas, Mahtob Aqazade

Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications

Elementary students’ early development of embedding and disembedding is complex and paves the way for later STEM learning. The purpose of this study was to clarify the factors that support students’ embedding (i.e., overlapping shapes to form a new shape) and disembedding (i.e., identifying discrete shapes within another shape) through the use of filled shapes as opposed to shape frames. We recruited 26 Grade 1 students (~6–7 years old) and 23 Grade 3 students (~8–9 years old), asked them to work on two layered puzzle designs from the Color Code puzzle game, and interviewed them about their thinking processes. The …

MeCP2 is associated with Rett syndrome (RTT), MECP2 duplication syndrome, and a number of conditions with isolated features of these diseases, including autism, intellectual disability, and motor dysfunction. MeCP2 is known to broadly bind methylated DNA, but the precise molecular mechanism driving disease pathogenesis remains to be determined. Using proximity-dependent biotinylation (BioID), we identified a transcription factor 20 (TCF20) complex that interacts with MeCP2 at the chromatin interface. Importantly, RTT-causing mutations in MECP2 disrupt this interaction. TCF20 and MeCP2 are highly coexpressed in neurons and coregulate the expression of key neuronal genes. Reducing Tcf20 partially rescued the behavioral deficits caused …

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of death worldwide, however our understanding of cell specific mechanisms underlying COPD pathobiology remains incomplete. Here, we analyze single-cell RNA sequencing profiles of explanted lung tissue from subjects with advanced COPD or control lungs, and we validate findings using single-cell RNA sequencing of lungs from mice exposed to 10 months of cigarette smoke, RNA sequencing of isolated human alveolar epithelial cells, functional in vitro models, and in situ hybridization and immunostaining of human lung tissue samples. We identify a subpopulation of alveolar epithelial type II cells with transcriptional evidence for aberrant …

Fine-Scale Mapping Of Natural Ecological Communities Using Machine Learning Approaches, Parth Bhatt, Ann Maclean, Yvette Dickinson, Chandan Kumar

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Remote sensing technology has been used widely in mapping forest and wetland communities, primarily with moderate spatial resolution imagery and traditional classification techniques. The success of these mapping efforts varies widely. The natural communities of the Laurentian Mixed Forest are an important component of Upper Great Lakes ecosystems. Mapping and monitoring these communities using high spatial resolution imagery benefits resource management, conservation and restoration efforts. This study developed a robust classification approach to delineate natural habitat communities utilizing multispectral high-resolution (60 cm) National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery data. For accurate training set delineation, NAIP imagery, soils data and spectral …

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Nischarin (Nisch) is a cytosolic scaffolding protein that harbors tumor‐suppressor‐like characteristics. Previous studies have shown that Nisch functions as a scaffolding protein and regulates multiple biological activities. In the current study, we prepared a complete Nisch knockout model, for the first time, by deletion of exons 5 and 6. This knockout model was confirmed by Qrt– PCR and Western blotting with products from mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cells. Embryos and adult mice of knockouts are significantly smaller than their wild‐type counterparts. Deletion of Nisch enhanced cell migration, as demonstrated by wound type and transwell migration assays. Since the animals were …

Preconception Maternal Posttraumatic Stress And Child Negative Affectivity: Prospectively Evaluating The Intergenerational Impact Of Trauma, Danielle A. Swales, Elysia Poggi Davis, Nicole E. Mahrer, Christine M. Guardino, Madeleine Shalowitz, Sharon L. Ramey, Christine Dunkel Schetter

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship

The developmental origins of psychopathology begin before birth and perhaps even prior to conception. Understanding the intergenerational transmission of psychopathological risk is critical to identify sensitive windows for prevention and early intervention. Prior research demonstrates that maternal trauma history, typically assessed retrospectively, has adverse consequences for child socioemotional development. However, very few prospective studies of preconception trauma exist, and the role of preconception symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains unknown. The current study prospectively evaluates whether maternal preconception PTSD symptoms predict early childhood negative affectivity, a key dimension of temperament and predictor of later psychopathology. One hundred and eighteen …

Pevonedistat Targets Malignant Cells In Myeloproliferative Neoplasms In Vitro And In Vivo Via Nfκb Pathway Inhibition, Tim Kong, Angelo B A Laranjeira, Taylor B Collins, Elisa S De Togni, Abigail J Wong, Mary C Fulbright, Marianna Ruzinova, Hamza Celik, Grant A Challen, Daniel A C Fisher, Stephen T Oh

Open Access Publications

Targeted inhibitors of JAK2 (eg ruxolitinib) often provide symptomatic relief for myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) patients, but the malignant clone persists and remains susceptible to disease transformation. These observations suggest that targeting alternative dysregulated signaling pathways may provide therapeutic benefit. Previous studies identified NFκB pathway hyperactivation in myelofibrosis (MF) and secondary acute myeloid leukemia (sAML) that was insensitive to JAK2 inhibition. Here, we provide evidence that NFκB pathway inhibition via pevonedistat targets malignant cells in MPN patient samples as well as in MPN and patient-derived xenograft mouse models that are nonredundant with ruxolitinib. Colony forming assays revealed preferential inhibition of MF …

Department of Medicine

Reports of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis have been increasing in frequency since early 2021, particularly among patients with uncontrolled diabetes. Patients with diabetes and hyperglycaemia often have an inflammatory state that could be potentiated by the activation of antiviral immunity to SARS-CoV2, which might favour secondary infections. In this Review, we analysed 80 published and unpublished cases of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis. Uncontrolled diabetes, as well as systemic corticosteroid treatment, were present in most patients with COVID-19-associated mucormycosis, and rhino-orbital cerebral mucormycosis was the most frequent disease. Mortality was high at 49%, which was particularly due to patients with pulmonary or disseminated mucormycosis or …

Steroid-Sensitive Nephrotic Syndrome Candidate Gene Clvs1 Regulates Podocyte Oxidative Stress And Endocytosis, Brandon M. Lane, Andrew F. Malone, Et Al. Jan 2022

Steroid-Sensitive Nephrotic Syndrome Candidate Gene Clvs1 Regulates Podocyte Oxidative Stress And Endocytosis, Brandon M. Lane, Andrew F. Malone, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

We performed next-generation sequencing in patients with familial steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) and identified a homozygous segregating variant (p.H310Y) in the gene encoding clavesin-1 (CLVS1) in a consanguineous family with 3 affected individuals. Knockdown of the clavesin gene in zebrafish (clvs2) produced edema phenotypes due to disruption of podocyte structure and loss of glomerular filtration barrier integrity that could be rescued by WT CLVS1 but not the p.H310Y variant. Analysis of cultured human podocytes with CRISPR/Cas9-mediated CLVS1 knockout or homozygous H310Y knockin revealed deficits in clathrin-mediated endocytosis and increased susceptibility to apoptosis that could be rescued with corticosteroid treatment, mimicking …

Subtle Speech And Use Of Pronouns In Tolkien's Novels And Old English Poetry, Chiara Marchetti Jan 2022

Subtle Speech And Use Of Pronouns In Tolkien's Novels And Old English Poetry, Chiara Marchetti

Journal of Tolkien Research

In human conversations, verbal exchanges follow rules. Applicable both to Old English poetry and Tolkien's fiction, rules governing speech set the right quantity and quality of information to be transmitted and provide strategies to avoid conflicts. What is too redundant or scanty in a speech might indicate more layers of meaning, which are implied or suggested.

Language can create or resolve conflicts; the careful use of words and even pronouns can make a difference between self-assertion and cooperation, unity and separation. Such refined linguistic technique is visible in Old English poetry, where dialectal ability is as important as valour, where …
