Community-Based Rangeland Management In Namibia Improves Resource Governance But Not Environmental And Economic Outcomes, D. Layne Coppock, Luke Crowley, Susan L. Durham, Dylan Groves, Julian C. Jamison, Dean Karlan, Brien E. Norton, R. Douglas Ramsey Feb 2022

Community-Based Rangeland Management In Namibia Improves Resource Governance But Not Environmental And Economic Outcomes, D. Layne Coppock, Luke Crowley, Susan L. Durham, Dylan Groves, Julian C. Jamison, Dean Karlan, Brien E. Norton, R. Douglas Ramsey

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Classic theories suggest that common pool resources are subject to overexploitation. Community-based resource management approaches may ameliorate tragedy of the commons effects. Here we use a randomized evaluation in Namibia’s communal rangelands to study a comprehensive four-year program to support community-based rangeland and cattle management. We find that the program led to persistent and large improvements for eight of thirteen indices of social and behavioral outcomes. Effects on rangeland health, cattle productivity and household economics, however, were either negative or nil. Positive impacts on community resource management may have been offset by communities’ inability to control grazing by non-participating herds …

Improving Taxonomic Delimitation Of Fungal Species In The Age Of Genomics And Phenomics, Asjley Stengel, Kimberly M. Stanke, Amanda C. Quattrone, Joshua Herr Feb 2022

Improving Taxonomic Delimitation Of Fungal Species In The Age Of Genomics And Phenomics, Asjley Stengel, Kimberly M. Stanke, Amanda C. Quattrone, Joshua Herr

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Species concepts have long provided a source of debate among biologists. These lively debates have been important for reaching consensus on how to communicate across scientific disciplines and for advancing innovative strategies to study evolution, population biology, ecology, natural history, and disease epidemiology. Species concepts are also important for evaluating variability and diversity among communities, understanding biogeographical distributions, and identifying causal agents of disease across animal and plant hosts. While there have been many attempts to address the concept of species in the fungi, there are several concepts that have made taxonomic delimitation especially challenging. In this review we discuss …

The Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) thrives in its extreme Antarctic environment. We generated the Weddell seal genome assembly and a high-quality annotation to investigate genome-wide evolutionary pressures that underlie its phenotype and to study genes implicated in hypoxia tolerance and a lipid-based metabolism. Genome-wide analyses included gene family expansion/contraction, positive selection, and diverged sequence (acceleration) compared to other placental mammals, identifying selection in coding and non-coding sequence in five pathways that may shape cardiovascular phenotype. Lipid metabolism as well as hypoxia genes contained more accelerated regions in the Weddell seal compared to genomic background. Top-significant genes were SUMO2 and EP300; …

Chronic low-grade inflammation is a hallmark of aging, which is now coined as inflamm-aging. Inflamm-aging contributes to many age-associated diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We have shown that gut hormone ghrelin, via its receptor growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R), regulates energy metabolism and inflammation in aging. Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiome has a critical role in intestinal immunity of the host. To determine whether microbiome is an integral driving force of GHS-R mediated immune-metabolic homeostasis in aging, we assessed the gut microbiome profiles of young and old GHS-R global knockout …

Investigating How Ecologically Relevant Thermal Conditions Affect Gonadal Development In A Turtle With Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination, Anthony Trey Breitenbach Feb 2022

Investigating How Ecologically Relevant Thermal Conditions Affect Gonadal Development In A Turtle With Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination, Anthony Trey Breitenbach

Theses and Dissertations

In turtles and numerous other reptilian species, sex is determined by the environmental temperatures during embryonic development, which is referred to temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). In the type of TSD common in turtles, cool temperatures (below 29 °C) during embryonic development produce mainly males while warm temperatures (above 29 °C) produce mainly females. Gonadal differentiation in TSD species involves numerous genes that are also necessary to produce a testis or ovary in species with genotypic sex determination. However, most of what we know about TSD comes from studies performed in the laboratory using constant temperature incubation conditions, which are not …

Some Helps By The Way, Earl Clement Davis Feb 2022

Some Helps By The Way, Earl Clement Davis

Sermons, 1902-1904

This sermon is about the need of spiritual and mental nourishment. Suggestions for this include daily (morning) prayer and/or the contemplation and appreciation of something good, beautiful, or true in the the world around us. He also discusses the face (as well as the body) being the mirror of the soul, and uses portraits of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry VIII to illustrate this. Note that while the usual 'Scripture' and 'Text' headings appear, both are blank.

While this manuscript has no date, the paper used is consistent with other dated sermons from Earl Davis' time as a student at …

Use Of A Direct, Rapid Immunohistochemical Test For Diagnosis Of Rabies Virus In Bats, Charles E. Rupprecht, Lolita Van Pelt, April D. Davis, Richard B. Chipman, David L. Bergman Feb 2022

Use Of A Direct, Rapid Immunohistochemical Test For Diagnosis Of Rabies Virus In Bats, Charles E. Rupprecht, Lolita Van Pelt, April D. Davis, Richard B. Chipman, David L. Bergman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Rabies, a zoonotic encephalitis due to transmission of a lyssavirus, such as rabies virus (RABV), has the highest case fatality of any infectious disease. A global program for the elimination of human rabies caused by dogs is proposed for realization by 2030. Sensitive, specific, and inexpensive diagnostic tests are necessary for enhanced surveillance to detect infection, inform public health and veterinary professionals during risk assessments of exposure, and support overall programmatic goals. Multiple laboratory techniques are used to confirm a suspect case of rabies. One method for the detection of lyssavirus antigens within the brain is the direct rapid immunohistochemical …

Long Term Estrogen Loss Worsens Heart Function In Aged Female Mice, Pamela Avendaño-Rubí Feb 2022

Long Term Estrogen Loss Worsens Heart Function In Aged Female Mice, Pamela Avendaño-Rubí

Tennessee Posters at the Capitol [2022]

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and according to the American Heart Association, the risk of HD in aging menopausal women doubles compared to men of the same age. Excessive contractility of blood vessels is a common feature in heart disease. Clinical and animal studies further support that estrogen loss worsen the contractility in the heart but the details remain unclear. Thus, the overall goal of this work was to examine how the timing and duration of estrogen loss affects heart failure. Our hypothesis is that long-term estrogen loss following heart failure worsens cardiac function of the …

Content Moderation Issues Online: Section 230 Is Not To Blame, Reese D. Bastian Feb 2022

Content Moderation Issues Online: Section 230 Is Not To Blame, Reese D. Bastian

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (“Section 230”) is the glue that holds the Internet—as we know it today—together. Section 230 says, “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” Simply put, Section 230 says that websites or platforms are not liable for content posted by third parties. There are many critics who attribute the maladies of the online world to Section 230. Section 230 presents issues such as over-moderation by Interactive Computer Service (“ICS”) providers that can go as far …
