The Pets You Get, Ariel Woodbury Mar 2022

The Pets You Get, Ariel Woodbury

Children's Book and Media Review

A little boy’s sister gets a pet guinea pig, but he isn’t impressed. There are way more exciting pets you can get! He wants to have a fire-breathing dragon. Or maybe brown bear with big claws and sharp teeth would be fun. Even dogs are more exciting than a guinea pig! He holds the guinea pig and it climbs up his arm with sharp little claws. Then he chases the guinea pig around the house. The guinea pig is hard to catch and even better at playing hide and go seek! He decides that maybe they aren't so bad...but he'd …

EPUB 3.0, the current standard for eBooks, and has a number of features that make it more accessible to readers with disabilities than previous formats. In this talk I'll demonstrate how to crack open an EPUB3 and look at the code inside. I'll show some simple techniques for making eBooks more accessible using HTML: ARIA attributes to make generic tags more specific and provide landmarks to help assistive technologies to navigate the book, more semantic tags to make sure screen readers read text aloud properly, long and extended descriptions to communicate the meaning of complex images, and a method to …

Endogenous Cftr Expression In Human Epithelial Cell Lines, Zithlaly Amezquita Mar 2022

Endogenous Cftr Expression In Human Epithelial Cell Lines, Zithlaly Amezquita

Undergraduate Research Conference

CFTR (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane-conductance Regulator) is a plasma membrane protein that functions as a chloride ion channel on many epithelial cells. There are over 1000 mutations that affect the function of this protein; however, the most common mutation is DF508. CFTR mutations target many secretory organs like pancreas and lungs causing the genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF), common among Caucasians of northern European origin. Detection of endogenous CFTR expression is possible by a difficult and costly immunoprecipitation method but not by the most used western blotting method. Therefore, the goal of this project was to detect the endogenous CFTR expression …

In the 1920s, radio in the United States was in its infancy. Only two decades earlier, in Decemher 1901, Guglielmo Marconi had successfully transmitted and received wireless signals across the Atlantic Ocean. Since then, equipment and techniques had been improved-mainly for military or maritime safety uses such as communication with ships at sea. Most early efforts involved wireless telegraphy, transmitting Morse Code by radio signals. Some experimenters, however, worked on wireless telephony and the transmission of the human voice.

Disney World may reign as Florida's most dazzling connection to the world of animated cartoons, but long before Disney there was Fleischer. Thirty-five year before Walt Disney packed Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck off to central Florida, his biggest competitor, Max and Dave Fleischer, built their own magic kingdom a couple of hundred miles farther south.

"Is This What We Came To Florida For?": Florida Women And The Fight Against Air Pollution In The 1960s, Scott Hamilton Dewey

Florida Historical Quarterly

Environmentalism sometimes has been characterized, and criticized, as primarily a men’s movement. Most of the early conservationists were indeed men preoccupied with outdoor recreation and wilderness experiences.2 Yet beginning in the late nineteenth century, women throughout the United States took a leading role in what would become by 1970 one of the most important branches of the environmental movement— the fight against air pollution. Although women reformers were never the only group combating air pollution, they frequently were among the most numerous and radical of such early environmental activists.

Ruth Bryan Owen: Florida's First Congresswoman And Lifetime Activist, Sally Vickers

Florida Historical Quarterly

When Ruth Bryan Owen was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by Rollins College in 1927, she had yet to hold an elected office. A year before Owen won election as Florida’s first congresswoman, her contemporaries were already commemorating her meritorious work on behalf of her state and her country. Public recognition of Owen’s civic activism continued throughout a career that encompassed two terms in the United States House of Representatives, an appointment as Minister Plenipotentiary to Denmark, and service to the United Nations as an advisor and alternate delegate to the General Assembly.

Perceptions And Practices Of Key Worker Stakeholder Groups In Hospital Animal- Assisted Intervention Programs On Occupational Benefits And Perceived Risks, Kathryn R. Dalton, William Altekruse, Peter Campbell, Kathy Ruble, Karen C. Carroll, Roland J. Thorpe Jr., Jacqueline Agnew, Meghan F. Davis

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Background: Animal-assisted intervention (AAI) programs, used widely for patient benefit, have increasingly been used for healthcare workers (HCW) to reduce occupational stress. However, there are barriers to these programs which limit their utilization, for both patients and HCW, specifically infectious disease concerns. The aim of the research project is to identify barriers and facilitators to AAI program use for healthcare worker benefit, and determine knowledge, beliefs, and practices regarding infectious disease risk and control policies, in order to understand the contextual parameters of program implementation.

Methods: We collected perceptions of key stakeholders involved with hospital AAI programs (HCW and AAI …

Student Publications

The role of the pneumococcal polysaccharide capsule is largely unclear for Streptococcus pneumoniae keratitis, an ocular inflammatory disease that develops as a result of bacterial infection of the cornea. In this study, capsule-deficient strains were compared to isogenic parent strains in their ability to adhere to human corneal epithelial cells. One isogenic pair was further used in topical ocular infection of mice to assess the contribution of the capsule to keratitis. The results showed that non-encapsulated pneumococci were significantly more adherent to cells, persisted in significantly higher numbers on mouse corneas in vivo, and caused significant increases in murine ocular …

Fecal Microbial Transplant For Weight Loss In Adults Living With Obesity And Diabetes, Nathan Franks Mar 2022

Fecal Microbial Transplant For Weight Loss In Adults Living With Obesity And Diabetes, Nathan Franks

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Obesity remains a pressing health concern amongst the US population. Currently, behavior modification is the primary approach to weight management. However, this strategy is not always successful and many are relegated to medications or surgery to achieve weight loss. Research associating the gut microbiome with obesity has fostered interest in microbiome manipulation as a means for weight loss. One method of manipulation, fecal microbial transplant (FMT), has received particular attention. While early inquiry into FMT and weight loss has been unrevealing, heterogeneous methodologies and lack of long term trials limits the ability to draw conclusions. To investigate the potential adjunctive …

The Correlation Between Peer Support And Quality Of Life Of Nurses, Kim Diane Rose Maryniak Mar 2022

The Correlation Between Peer Support And Quality Of Life Of Nurses, Kim Diane Rose Maryniak

Dissertations

Nurses can experience stress and perceived traumatic events during their career. This distress in the workplace can affect the quality of life of nurses. Exposure to perceived distressing events may lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, post-traumatic stress disorder, patient errors or poor outcomes, horizontal violence or even nurses leaving the profession. Peer support is a strategy which has been explored to increase defensive lines and improve coping. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to examine if a relationship exists between the use of peer support, as conceptualized within the framework of the Neuman System Model, and the quality …

Clinically Useful Tumor Fluorescence Greater Than 24 Hours After 5-Aminolevulinic Acid Administration, Sameah A. Haider, Travis M. Hamilton, Rachel J. Hunt, Ian Y. Lee, Adam M. Robin

Neurosurgery Articles

BACKGROUND: 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a valuable surgical adjuvant used for the resection of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Since Food and Drug Administration approval in 2017, 5-ALA has been used in over 37,000 cases. The current recommendation for peak efficacy and intraoperative fluorescence is within 4 h after administration. This narrow time window imposes a perioperative time constraint which may complicate or preclude the use of 5-ALA in GBM surgery.

CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes the prolonged activity of 5-ALA in a 66-year-old patient with a newly diagnosed GBM lesion within the left supramarginal gyrus. An awake craniotomy with language …

Size Structure And Intraguild Interactions Between Two Ambystoma Species, Gwyneth Daunton Mar 2022

Size Structure And Intraguild Interactions Between Two Ambystoma Species, Gwyneth Daunton

Theses and Dissertations

Intraguild interactions affect population and community structure through a combination of competition and predation. Changes in size structure influence intraguild interactions by affecting the strength and direction of these species’ interactions. I tested for size-structured intraguild interactions in temporary pond ecosystems between marbled salamanders (Ambystoma opacum) and tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) using an outdoor mesocosm experiment. I hypothesized that 1) A. opacum survivorship and growth would be negatively impacted when both species start at a similar size because tiger salamanders grow faster and are more aggressive 2) A. tigrinum will grow slower and have lower survivorship …

Monitoring Occupancy Of Bats With Acoustic Data: Power And Sample Size Recommendations, Jeremy A. Baumgardt, Michael L. Morrison, Leonard A. Brennan, Helen T. Davis, Rachel R. Fern, Joseph M. Szewczak, Tyler A. Campbell Mar 2022

Monitoring Occupancy Of Bats With Acoustic Data: Power And Sample Size Recommendations, Jeremy A. Baumgardt, Michael L. Morrison, Leonard A. Brennan, Helen T. Davis, Rachel R. Fern, Joseph M. Szewczak, Tyler A. Campbell

Western North American Naturalist

Bats are difficult to study due to their nocturnal, cryptic, and highly vagile nature. Ongoing advances in acoustic recording hardware and call classification software have made species detection and activity monitoring more feasible. Our objectives were to determine the effort necessary to monitor bat assemblages using an occupancy framework and acoustic data and to provide guidelines for researchers interested in developing similar monitoring programs. We collected data at 2 study areas in South Texas from June through September in 2015, 2016, and 2017. We used Pettersson D500X Mk II real-time full-spectrum detectors and classified sound files using SonoBat bat call …

Differences Between Northern And Southern Female Coyotes, Alina Gabriela Monroy-Gamboa Mar 2022

Differences Between Northern And Southern Female Coyotes, Alina Gabriela Monroy-Gamboa

Western North American Naturalist

The coyote (Canis latrans) has a wide distribution range, spanning boreal forests from the north of the continent to tropical environments in Central America, showing great adaptation and plasticity. Bergmann’s rule states that individuals inhabiting colder climates are larger than those in warmer climates. It is suggested that in carnivore species, litter size is influenced by allometric constraints such as maternal body size. The aim of this study is to analyze the relations using correlation between female coyote mass, latitude, and litter size. Using data compiled from the literature, I carried out statistical analyses to correlate female body …
