During its twenty years, SDLP has provided a forum for scholars, practitioners, and students to analyze the complex challenges to achieving economic and social justice within the constraints of our planet’s natural environment. From its first volume addressing liability for carbon trading, the regulation of genetically modified organisms, and …

Underserved Communities Trashed By Plastic: Slowing The Proliferation Of Petroleum Based Products Through Stewardship Laws And Enhanced Back-End Regulatory Solutions, Joan F. Chu

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Introduction

Plastic pollution has attracted a tremendous amount of attention and press coverage in early 2021 as evidenced in news stories; an episode of John Oliver’s show, “Last Week Tonight”; and a viral tweet from Greta Thunberg highlighting a study linking plastic pollution to human penises shrinking. These eye-catching pieces stemmed from Dr. Shanna H. Swan’s work that culminated in her book, Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race. Other articles have highlighted plastic pollution’s impact on polar bears, which causes their penis …

Bison, Tribes, And Brucellosis In The Interagency Bison Management Plan, Bailey Nickoloff

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Introduction

It would be in the best interest of the Interagency Bison Management Plan (“IBMP”) and its affiliated agencies to allow Tribal governments and Tribal members to hunt bison within Yellowstone National Park (“YNP”). This would help to reduce the spread of brucellosis, reduce the environmental impacts from bison in YNP, and honor the treaties signed between the United States and Tribal governments. These agencies can accomplish this by implementing treaty hunting rights in a new Environmental Impact Statement (“EIS”) and within an existing legal framework.

Reconsidering On The Early Types Of Football, Yiannis Giossos, Aristomenis Sotiropoulos, Athanasios Souglis, Georgia Dafopoulou

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

According to certain assumptions, physical activities all over the world from the antiquity until the 19th century can be considered as the historical origins of modern football (soccer). The present study examines whether and to what extent those assumptions hold true. In order to criticize these assumptions, a discussion whether ancient and pre-modern activities can be considered as sports is presented. Then, the morphological movement similarity that those activities have with modern football is examined. Finally, a discussion about to what extent the history of these activities is characterized by a continuous developing progress is undertaken. According to our argument …

The Impact Of 32 Days’ Exposure To Hypobaric Hypoxia On Physiological Cost Of Sub-Maximal Work Performed At The Sea Level, Sylwester Kujach, Tomasz Grzywacz, Ewa Ziemann, Robert Szymczak, Marcin Luszczyk, Radoslaw Laskowski

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: Many papers showed that long-lasting exposure to hypobaric hypoxia changed the metabolic cost of work and substrate contribution, elevating exercise energy expenditure and carbohydrates utilization. Only few of them have shown how long this adaptive changes are maintained. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of prolonged sojourn at high altitude on the physiological cost of sub-maximal work performed at the sea level. Materials and methods: Eight members of two high altitude expeditions (Lenin Peak 7,134 m a.s.l. and Somoni Peak 7,495 m a.s.l.), 7 males and 1 female, mean age 26 (±4.1) years, volunteered for …

Taijiquan In The Prevention Of Symptoms Of Parkinson’S Disease – A Comparative Analysis Of Research Results, Malgorzata Kawa, Mateusz Kajnat, Krzysztof Klukowski

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

The primary symptom in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive disorder of motor functions. Despite constant pharmacological treatment, the patient’s daily functioning ability diminishes, leading to deterioration in the quality of life. Clinical and experimental studies show that systematic use of physical exercise delays the build-up of motor impairments in Parkinson’s disease by prolonging patients’ functional independence and thereby improving their quality of life. Systematic physical activity, such as resistance, balance, and stretching exercises (elements of aerobics, Nordic walking, dance, tai chi, or the use of Taijiquan martial arts), is considered as possibly useful therapy in symptomatic treatment of PD. …

The Global Rise Of Online Devices, Cyber Crime And Cyber Defense: Enhancing Ethical Actions, Counter Measures, Cyber Strategy, And Approaches, Naresh Kshetri

Dissertations

The rise of online devices, online users, online shopping, online gaming, and online teaching has ultimately given rise to online attacks and online crimes. As cases of COVID-19 seem to increase day by day, so do online crimes and attacks (as many sectors and organizations went 100% online). Technological advancements and cyber warfare already generated many ethical issues, as internet users increasingly need ethical cyber defense strategies.

Individual internet users have challenges on their end; and on the other end, nation states (some secretly, some openly), are investing in robot weapons and autonomous weapons systems (AWS). New technologies have combined …

Temperature Changes During Implant Osteotomy Preparations In Fresh Human Cadaver Tibiae, Comparing Straight With Tapered Drills, Nikolaos Soldatos, Laura Nelson-Rabe, Nathan Palanker, Nikola Angelov, Georgios Romanos, Robin Weltman

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The success of osseointegration depends on many factors. With temperatures beyond a 47 °C threshold over 1 min, bone survival may be impaired. The purpose of the study was to evaluate, in fresh human cadaver tibiae, the temperature changes during osteotomy preparations using two straight and two tapered implant systems' drills, external irrigation, and varying revolutions per minute (RPM). The tibiae from a fresh female cadaver were harvested bilaterally. Two tapered and two straight design drills were assessed. Two-hundred and forty osteotomies were prepared at 6 mm depth following the drill sequence of the manufacturers' protocol for each drilling speed. …

Seasonal And Interannual Variation In High‑Latitude Estuarine Fsh Community Structure Along A Glacial To Non‑Glacial Watershed Gradient In Southeast Alaska, Anne H. Beaudreau, Carolyn A. Bergstrom, Emily Jean Whitney, Douglas H. Duncan, Nina Lundstrom Mar 2022

Seasonal And Interannual Variation In High‑Latitude Estuarine Fsh Community Structure Along A Glacial To Non‑Glacial Watershed Gradient In Southeast Alaska, Anne H. Beaudreau, Carolyn A. Bergstrom, Emily Jean Whitney, Douglas H. Duncan, Nina Lundstrom

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Along the Gulf of Alaska, rapid glacier retreat has driven changes in transport of freshwater, sediments, and nutrients to estuary habitats. Over the coming decades, deglaciation will lead to a temporary increase, followed by a long-term decline of glacial influence on estuaries. Therefore, quantifying the current variability in estuarine fish community structure in regions predicted to be most affected by glacier loss is necessary to anticipate future impacts. We analyzed fish community data collected monthly (April through September) over 7 years (2013–2019) from glacially influenced estuaries along the southeastern Gulf of Alaska. River delta sites within estuaries were sampled along …

Improving Safety For Riti Communities In Idaho: Documenting Crash Rates And Possible Intervention Measures, Michael Lowry, Skye Swoboda-Colberg, Logan Prescott, Ahmed Abdel-Rahim

CSET Project Reports

This report describes a new set of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools that we created to conduct safety analyses. These new GIS tools can be used by state DOTs and transportation agencies to document crash rates and prioritize safety improvement projects. The tools perform Network Segment Screening, the first step in the Roadway Safety Management Process (RSMP) outlined in the Highway Safety Manual (HSM). After developing these new tools, we conducted two case studies to demonstrate how they can be used. The first case study was for screening intersections. Our analysis included all intersections on the Idaho State Highway System. …

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals And Breast Cancer: Disparities In Exposure And Importance Of Research Inclusivity, Ashlie Santaliz Casiano, Annah Lee, Dede Teteh, Zeynep Madak Erdogan, Lindsey Trevino Mar 2022

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals And Breast Cancer: Disparities In Exposure And Importance Of Research Inclusivity, Ashlie Santaliz Casiano, Annah Lee, Dede Teteh, Zeynep Madak Erdogan, Lindsey Trevino

Health Sciences and Kinesiology Faculty Articles

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are known contributors to breast cancer development. EDC exposures commonly occur through food packaging, cookware, fabrics, and personal care products as well as through the environment. Increasing evidence highlights disparities in EDC exposure across racial/ethnic groups, yet breast cancer research continues to lack the inclusion necessary to positively impact treatment response and overall survival in these socially disadvantaged populations. Additionally, the inequity in environmental exposures has yet to be remedied. Exposure to EDCs due to structural racism poses an unequivocal risk to marginalized communities. In this review, we summarize recent epidemiological and molecular studies on two lesser-studied …

The Role Of Eicosanoid Metabolism In Mammalian Wound Healing And Inflammation, Kenneth D. Maus Mar 2022

The Role Of Eicosanoid Metabolism In Mammalian Wound Healing And Inflammation, Kenneth D. Maus

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Inflammatory wounds, both chronic and acute, lead to increased morbidity and mortality rates, especially in the elderly population. The annual healthcare cost for chronic wound care alone is over $39B in the US and the demographic of susceptible patients is steadily increasing due to an aging population and lifestyle-related diseases (e.g., hyperlipidemia, obesity, and type 2 diabetes). In fact, many chronic wounds currently have a worse 5-year outlook than certain types of cancers. This shows the need for expediting the wound healing process in such a way that compresses inflammatory signaling and encourages wound resolution without sacrificing pathogen removal and …

The Labors Of Professional Wrestling: The Dream, The Drive, And Debility, Brooks Oglesby Mar 2022

The Labors Of Professional Wrestling: The Dream, The Drive, And Debility, Brooks Oglesby

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study centers and examines the laboring body of the professional wrestler as it moves and works through professional wrestling training. I put forth debility as a theoretical framework to naming and understanding the ways that long-term bodily wear and early death becomes an acceptable cost of doing business for the wrestling industry. Dreams of achieving wealth, fame, and stability while escaping precarity and obscurity draw fans toward joining the industry, and these dreams work to maintain a working culture that takes for granted the ways that the wrestler’s body is marked for disposability, wearing down, and early death. I …
