CEELAB Children's Books

Everyone is talking about plastic pollution. In this book for young audiences, we provide information on plastic pollution, including microplastics. We describe some of the many animals found in our favorite estuary, the Indian River Lagoon, that are impacted by plastics. This book asks young readers to pick the items they want to see in their lagoon, "This animal friend or that harmful piece of plastic?"

The Role Of Coastal Resource Stability In The Transition To Agriculture, Soconusco, Mexico, Asia Alsgaard Apr 2022

The Role Of Coastal Resource Stability In The Transition To Agriculture, Soconusco, Mexico, Asia Alsgaard

Anthropology ETDs

Around the world, the transition to agriculture happens at different times and under different conditions, sometimes failing to occur at all. I address how risk management strategies, such as Niche Construction tactics, influence human subsistence decision making, both within the context of climate or habitat changes and its converse, stability. I focus on how coastal resource reliance in the Soconusco region, Mexico, may have allowed the Archaic period Chantuto society to continue to rely on aquatic resources even as other groups in the region began relying on maize agriculture. To address this question within the context of stability, I focus …

Localized Heat Therapy Improves Mitochondrial Function In Human Skeletal Muscle, Erik D. Marchant Apr 2022

Localized Heat Therapy Improves Mitochondrial Function In Human Skeletal Muscle, Erik D. Marchant

Theses and Dissertations

Physical activity results in various types of stress in skeletal muscle including energetic, oxidative, and heat stress. Acute exposure to stress impairs skeletal muscle mitochondrial function. In contrast, chronic intermittent exposure to mild stress through exercise training results in increased mitochondrial content and respiratory capacity. While oxidative and energetic stress have received much attention regarding their long-term effect on skeletal muscle mitochondria, heat stress is not well understood. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effects of localized heat therapy on human skeletal muscle mitochondria, and to compare these effects to those of high-intensity interval exercise training. Advanced Science Research Center

Cells elaborate transcriptional programs in response to external signals. In the peripheral nerves, Schwann cells (SC) sort axons of given caliber and start the process of wrapping their membrane around them. We identify Actin-like protein 6a (ACTL6a), part of SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex, as critical for the integration of axonal caliber recognition with the transcriptional program of myelination. Nuclear levels of ACTL6A in SC are increased by contact with large caliber axons or nanofibers, and result in the eviction of repressive histone marks to facilitate myelination. Without Actl6a the SC are unable to coordinate caliber recognition and myelin production. Peripheral …

Deep Into The Eyes: Applying Machine Learning To Improve Eye-Tracking, Aayush Kumar Chaudhary

Theses

Eye-tracking has been an active research area with applications in personal and behav- ioral studies, medical diagnosis, virtual reality, and mixed reality applications. Improving the robustness, generalizability, accuracy, and precision of eye-trackers while maintaining privacy is crucial. Unfortunately, many existing low-cost portable commercial eye trackers suffer from signal artifacts and a low signal-to-noise ratio. These trackers are highly depen- dent on low-level features such as pupil edges or diffused bright spots in order to precisely localize the pupil and corneal reflection. As a result, they are not reliable for studying eye movements that require high precision, such as microsaccades, smooth …

Roots To Ridges, Amanda Cohoon Apr 2022

Roots To Ridges, Amanda Cohoon

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

We all want a place to call home where we get to put our roots down. For some, this place is the state they were born in, and for others, it is a place they stumble upon along the journey of life. Some of us are lucky enough to live in such unbelievably special places, however, we don’t always seem to notice or appreciate this. The seemingly endless nature of our bustling society seems too often keep our focus shifted away from the natural beauty around us. This thought prompted me to begin this series of paintings and prints that …

Active Resistance By Merchant Vessel Crews During International Armed Conflict Is Not “Direct Participation In Hostilities”, Robert Mclaughlin Apr 2022

Active Resistance By Merchant Vessel Crews During International Armed Conflict Is Not “Direct Participation In Hostilities”, Robert Mclaughlin

International Law Studies

Within the land, air, and cyber conflict contexts, the concept of "civilian direct participation in hostilities" has been subject to intense scrutiny, interpretive endeavor, and operational application over the last several decades. There is a risk, however, that interpretations and applications based on this experience may inappropriately permeate the law of naval warfare, where the scope of application of this concept is considerably narrower. This is because a key difference between allocating law of armed conflict status ashore and at sea is that the law of armed conflict status of people at sea tends to follow the status of their …

The Consequences Of Climate Change For Native Bee Assemblages, Melanie R. Kazenel Apr 2022

The Consequences Of Climate Change For Native Bee Assemblages, Melanie R. Kazenel

Biology ETDs

Recent declines in terrestrial arthropod biodiversity highlight the need to pinpoint which taxa and ecosystem services are most threatened, and why. But, for most of the world’s ~20,000 bee species, we lack robust evidence of population trends, and the role of climate change remains surprisingly little studied. I used long-term bee monitoring data from the Sevilleta Long-Term Ecological Research Program (Socorro, NM, USA), along with complementary experimental and observational data, to examine how climate relates to bee abundance and diversity patterns over time and space, and to identify the traits that govern bees’ climate sensitivities. Under climate change, drylands worldwide …

Time Dependent Analysis Of Rat Microglial Surface Markers In Traumatic Brain Injury Reveals Dynamics Of Distinct Cell Subpopulations, Assaf Gottlieb, Naama Toledano-Furman, Karthik S Prabhakara, Akshita Kumar, Henry W Caplan, Supinder Bedi, Charles S Cox, Scott D Olson

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in a cascade of cellular responses, which produce neuroinflammation, partly due to the activation of microglia. Accurate identification of microglial populations is key to understanding therapeutic approaches that modify microglial responses to TBI and improve long-term outcome measures. Notably, previous studies often utilized an outdated convention to describe microglial phenotypes. We conducted a temporal analysis of the response to controlled cortical impact (CCI) in rat microglia between ipsilateral and contralateral hemispheres across seven time points, identified microglia through expression of activation markers including CD45, CD11b/c, and p2y12 receptor and evaluated their activation state using additional …

Anatomical Variability, Multi-Modal Coordinate Systems, And Precision Targeting In The Marmoset Brain, Takayuki Ose, David C Van Essen, Matthew F Glasser, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Localising accurate brain regions needs careful evaluation in each experimental species due to their individual variability. However, the function and connectivity of brain areas is commonly studied using a single-subject cranial landmark-based stereotactic atlas in animal neuroscience. Here, we address this issue in a small primate, the common marmoset, which is increasingly widely used in systems neuroscience. We developed a non-invasive multi-modal neuroimaging-based targeting pipeline, which accounts for intersubject anatomical variability in cranial and cortical landmarks in marmosets. This methodology allowed creation of multi-modal templates (MarmosetRIKEN20) including head CT and brain MR images, embedded in coordinate systems of anterior and …
