Integrin-Mediated Adhesion Promotes Centrosome Separation In Early Mitosis, Siamak A Kamranvar, Deepesh Kumar Gupta, Anishia Wasberg, Liangwen Liu, Joan Roig, Staffan Johansson

Open Access Publications

Integrin-mediated adhesion to the extracellular matrix is a key regulator of the cell cycle, as demonstrated for the passage of the G1/S checkpoint and the completion of cytokinetic abscission. Here, integrin-dependent regulation of the cell cycle in G2 and early M phases was investigated. The progression through the G2 and M phases was monitored by live-cell imaging and immunofluorescence staining in adherent and non-adherent fibroblast cells. Non-adherent cells, as well as adherent cells lacking FAK activity due to suppressed expression or pharmacological inhibition, exhibited a prolonged G2 phase and severely defect centrosome separation, resulting in delayed progress through the early …

Stories In Song, Lauren Kowal Apr 2022

Stories In Song, Lauren Kowal

Honors Theses

Accompanying her senior recital performance, Stories in Song, Kowal writes a form of extended program notes and analysis in which she relates each piece of music to their original storytelling form. She compares the intention of the composer in their retelling of these famous stories, or how the stories were adapted to music, and to how best portray the stories in their performance.

Tres Visiones Rizomáticas En La Identidad Caribeña: Chamoiseau, Miller E Indiana, Marilyn Rivera-Olivieri

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Nationless States And Stateless Beings: The Politics Of Identity And Citizenship In Claudio Mir’S Mondongo Scam And Cheech Marin’S Born In East L.A., Rebecca A. Barnes Apr 2022

Nationless States And Stateless Beings: The Politics Of Identity And Citizenship In Claudio Mir’S Mondongo Scam And Cheech Marin’S Born In East L.A., Rebecca A. Barnes

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

In the colloquial sense of the term, the word citizen refers to an individual who belongs to a nation, either by birthright or by naturalization. Therefore, citizenship denotes a political and a social belonging, an ideological home, and, in most cases, a strong foundation for the development of one’s personal identity. However, since nations are inherently artificial structures, made only tangible in the present day by a few centuries of recorded history, a philosophical approach to the term citizen complicates this definition. Based off critics including Hannah Arendt, Homi Bhabha, Fernando Ortiz, and Jacques Derrida, this essay seeks to explore …

Mephistopheles' Atopy, Allotry, Lottery. On Textual Proliferations In Goethe's Faust I And Ii, Pasqual Solass Apr 2022

Mephistopheles' Atopy, Allotry, Lottery. On Textual Proliferations In Goethe's Faust I And Ii, Pasqual Solass

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Combining a careful reading of selected passages from Goethe’s Faust I and II and of marginal but nevertheless revealing lines on maybe the actual protagonist of the “Tragödie”, Mephistopheles, this paper aims to present aspects of what one could call Goethe’s vision of a modern devil. Taking departure from etymological considerations on the root of “diabolus”, i.e. diabállein, meaning to cast apart, to scatter, but also to accuse, as well as from different beliefs of German “Aberglaube” (superstition), it will become clear that one if not the major feature of Goethe’s Mephistopheles-figure is movement, not just …

The Storm, Jordan Crosby Apr 2022

The Storm, Jordan Crosby

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

How do I recreate the feeling of a storm in a way that the audience will be able to connect the experience to their own personal storms? My project concept is an audio-visual-physical installation of a storm. I will be combining various forms of storytelling, specifically sound and video, to communicate how it feels to be very suddenly and violently confronted with one’s own mortality and fears. Instead of telling the story of the storm itself, I am using its structure to communicate a tonal journey. Despite the negative emotions that one can experience during and after a storm, I …

In Here., Kierra Byrd

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

The three-personality theory denotes that there are three personas: the persona for the world, the persona for your inner circle, and the persona for yourself or “true-self.” Many, including myself, might face difficulties determining whether they are presenting their true or genuine self. I want to treat this art project as a therapeutic tool for myself and others struggling with the idea of help. I also aim to convey the “true self” by showing the world you create in your mind along with the personalities you inhabit using my own perspective. I will create a short story utilizing animation and …

Back To The Rink, Marquila Winston

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

My short animation follows the life of the main character, Yaminah, once she loses her job. After trying unsuccessfully to bounce back, she realizes that making a career of her hobby is what will bring her happiness. Because this project is targeting adults and teenagers, I want to stress the variety of ways to make a career of something you already love without external pressures of working in a corporate setting. The subject of the story, Yaminah, uses roller skating to de-stress and exercise. Most regular skaters you find at a roller-skating rink use it as a safe space with …

Impact Of Fluctuating Insect Availability Levels On Parental Care Behavior In Insectivorous Birds, Cole Bourque Apr 2022

Impact Of Fluctuating Insect Availability Levels On Parental Care Behavior In Insectivorous Birds, Cole Bourque

Symposium of Student Scholars

Abstract Populations of aerially insectivorous birds are declining throughout North America. Urbanization may be indirectly contributing to this decline through its varying effects on populations of insects, an important food source in most insectivores' diet, especially those undergoing breeding efforts. How increasing urban sprawl and subsequent fluctuations in insect populations could impact various species at higher trophic levels is an important area of current study for future conservation endeavors. Certain habitats, with increased insect abundance, could facilitate higher provisioning rates and allow breeding parents to more effectively nourish their young. In addition, brooding and guarding behaviors in breeding birds may …

Classifying Dogs’ Facial Expressions: Implications For Human Cognitive Social Evolution And Cross-Species Communication, Lauren Mitchell Apr 2022

Classifying Dogs’ Facial Expressions: Implications For Human Cognitive Social Evolution And Cross-Species Communication, Lauren Mitchell

Symposium of Student Scholars

Facial expressions have been considered outward expressions of internal behavioral states. There is evidence that both dogs and humans subscribe to the social learning theory to acquire contextual information from past experiences in connecting facial expressions to behaviors. Previous research has shown that people are able to read dog facial expressions; however, the research is inconsistent on whether this behavior is innate or learned, as well as if this ability extends to dogs of different facial morphologies. The goal of this study was to understand the extent of humans’ ability to read facial expressions of dog breeds with different facial …

Understanding Humanity: Demarginalizing The Intersection Of Black Masculinity And Feminity For The Psyche, Kandice Fowlkes Apr 2022

Understanding Humanity: Demarginalizing The Intersection Of Black Masculinity And Feminity For The Psyche, Kandice Fowlkes

Symposium of Student Scholars

As the intersection of race and gender is a feat for the strong Black man and strong Black woman, the double edged sword is the deterioration of mental health overlooked by the need to maintain the guise of perfection. The social disadvantages of this intersection include a myriad of traumas such as financial stability, violence and oppression, and the internal stigma of judgment, which causes Black men and Women to delay or go undiagnosed for mental health disorders. In turn, this enables an unstable community to unite for mental health reform. Aside from seeking medical help, the conversation of mental …

Disentangling Nature Versus Nurture In A Mouse Model Of Alcohol Use, Laura Bauer Apr 2022

Disentangling Nature Versus Nurture In A Mouse Model Of Alcohol Use, Laura Bauer

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a major societal concern and so understanding how it develops is an important topic of research. Epigenetic mechanisms induced by mother-infant interactions can turn genes on or off in response to being reared in a different environment. This research attempted to disentangle the roles of nature and nurture on the development of AUD. Two strains of inbred mice were cross-fostered to see if the postnatal rearing environment can reduce alcohol consumption in the strain of mice genetically predisposed to drink alcohol. Researchers recorded mouse maternal care, pup anxiety, and pup alcohol consumption. It was hypothesized …

Comparing Integration Of Muslims In Europe: The Cases Of The Netherlands And Sweden, Nicholas Lorenzo Apr 2022

Comparing Integration Of Muslims In Europe: The Cases Of The Netherlands And Sweden, Nicholas Lorenzo

Proceedings of GREAT Day

The Middle East has seen increased violence and revolutions in recent years, producing a surge of millions of refugees, many of whom made their way to Europe. In addition to fueling far-right populist parties, this phenomenon has challenged existing norms of religious freedom, toleration, and churchstate relations in Europe. I was eager to see how different countries handled this new Muslim minority. I chose to compare the response of both Sweden and the Netherlands. Unlike Eastern Europe, the Netherlands and Sweden share a long history of democracy and religious tolerance. However, Sweden differed from the Netherlands in that until 2000 …

Urban Surveying Of Bees And Wasps And Conscious Management, Sofia Castro, Grace Cope, Francis Mullan, Jaden Keys

Symposium of Student Scholars

Pollinators are integral to the functioning of urban ecosystems and agriculture yet face decline from habitat loss and fragmentation associated with urbanization. Recently, a growing number of urban universities have taken steps to ensure their campuses support pollinators. Kennesaw State University (KSU) is a semi-urban school located in the unique ecological area between the biodiversity hotspot of the Southeastern Appalachians and the urban space of Atlanta, Georgia. Before the present study, no survey had been conducted to determine what pollinators and associated floral resources exist on the school’s grounds. Thus, we present the first inventory of pollinators and the floral …

Characterization Of Erinacine-A, Justice Brakache

Symposium of Student Scholars

The wood-rot fungus known as the lion’s mane mushroom (H. erinaceus) has a long history of usage in ancient eastern medicine, noted for its health-boosting properties, particularly to neurological health. Claims include this mushroom’s ability to stimulate nerve growth as well as prevent the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia. Recent studies on the subject have shown promising data supporting these anecdotal claims, proving the ability of extracts from this mushroom to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) in human cells, among other beneficial findings. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of the diterpenoid erinacine-A, present in H. …

Addressing Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions In Older Women, Amanda Scott, Kristen Digwood, Rachel Teslow, Allyson Bloom

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Women’s pelvic health has become an emerging practice area for occupational therapy in recent years. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports that 24% of women in the United States are impacted by pelvic floor disorders (2008). As the general population ages, older women’s health has become a pivotal topic for occupational therapists to include as part of a comprehensive plan of care. Occupational therapists must acquire deeper knowledge related to pelvic pain and urinary incontinence. Developing a deeper understanding of the types of pain and urinary incontinence in older women facilitates efficacy and efficiency in the delivery of occupational …

The USEPA recommends that Cl– concentrations do not exceed a four-day average of 230 mg/L more than once every 3 years, however concentrations of 600 mg/L have been measured during winter. Little is known about the effects of these concentrations, on sublethal endpoints in invertebrates. Thus, the goals of this study were to assess the effects of aqueous NaCl and MgCl2 exposure on 1) Physa acuta adult mobility endpoints 2) Adult embryonic deposition behavior and 3) Embryonic viability and development. Adults were exposed to 0, 100, 250, 500, and 1000mg/L NaCl or MgCl2 for 7d using static replacement. On days …

Impassioned Wonder: Theosis And The Place Of Reason In Gregory Nazianzen’S Theological Orations, Ben Vanderhyde Apr 2022

Impassioned Wonder: Theosis And The Place Of Reason In Gregory Nazianzen’S Theological Orations, Ben Vanderhyde

Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal

The theologian is situated between two realities: the revelation of God and the transcendence of God. It would seem that all of theology should be a matter of reckoning with these two extremities. Without transcendence, we have no God. Without revelation we have neither starting point, nor guide, nor aim; theology becomes pointless speculation. We must know God, and yet, not know him. He must remain far beyond any language to describe or any image to depict, and yet, we must describe him. Theology lives in the middle of these, neither putting God into a box nor holding God above, …

Eccentric: Writing Through The Lens Of Empathy, Steven M. Blacksmith Apr 2022

Eccentric: Writing Through The Lens Of Empathy, Steven M. Blacksmith

Theatre & Dance ETDs

In this essay, I detail my growth as a writer through different periods of empathic learning. I examine my childhood struggle to understand many common emotions and the ways in which I began to logically dissect and replicate them in life and in art. I further delve into this examination through my discovery of comedy and the lifelong process of understand the deep connections humans make with humor. I then discuss how my understanding of empathy allowed me to write my dissertation play, The Eccentrics, and create a world in which empathy among the characters can be a catalyst …

Diy Disinformation: Using Fake Crafting Videos To Combat Fake News, Elizabeth M. Downey

UL Publications

When Ann Reardon started her YouTube channel How to Cook That, she likely didn’t expect to spend a bulk of her time debunking so-called “cooking hack” videos. Amateur bakers and other viewers would ask her why the so-called easy recipes from channels like So Yummy didn’t work for them. As a service. she would demonstrate the so-called “shortcuts,” explain why they didn’t work, and then show how to execute a similar recipe the right way. With her willing husband serving as the unfortunate taste-tester, the videos gained popularity followed by requests for similar content, expanding to crafting and other “lifehack” …
