Enhancing Melatonin Secretion: The Methodical Consumption Of Tryptophan From Whole Cow’S Milk To Regulate Sleep Quality In Individuals Aged 18-30 With Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder, Shraddha Patel
Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference
Young adults in the United States are increasingly affected by DSPD (delayed sleep-wake phase disorder), a circadian rhythm disorder that delays evening sleep and morning wake times. Although medicinal supplements have shown to produce effective results on sleep induction, they come with unwanted side-effects. A review of the literature on clinical nutrition and endocrinology suggests that dietary alterations through the timed consumption of tryptophan-abundant whole cow’s milk could be a supplemental means of improving sleep quality. Studies on chrono nutrition indicate that dietary components absorbed by the bloodstream can change the circadian schedule of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland, …

Count Leo Tolstoy: A Tragedy Of The Times, Earl Clement Davis
Count Leo Tolstoy: A Tragedy Of The Times, Earl Clement Davis
Manuscripts
A relatively long discussion of Tolstoy's life and, in Davis' view, ultimately unfinished spiritual growth. There is analysis of two books, Anna Karenina and The Resurrection. Davis concludes Tolstoy failed to shed the need for dogma, and that this is a tragedy of our times because we are in change.

Assessing The Effects Of Age And Sex On Mtbi Severity, Jennifer Harrell
Assessing The Effects Of Age And Sex On Mtbi Severity, Jennifer Harrell
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a serious problem affecting soldiers in training and during deployment. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) accounts for over 80% of the TBIs recorded in soldiers in the last two decades. While symptoms may be mild initially, subjection to continued mTBIs could result in severe comorbidities appearing years later. Examination of current research available on mTBI shows an overwhelming skewing of murine animal models used as being solely male and of one age. With age and sex being known to have an affect on TBI, this project set out to explore the differences in severity in various …
Effect Of Dbf2 On Phosphorilation, Christian Bigler
Effect Of Dbf2 On Phosphorilation, Christian Bigler
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Cytokinesis refers to the separation of two daughter cells after mitotic division. An important signaling pathway that enables this process is called the Mitotic Exit Pathway, or MEN. Of particular interest in this pathway is the Dbf2 protein kinase. Dbf2 essentially acts as a middleman within the cascade of messengers and activates proteins that physically separate the cells. The kinase activity of Dbf2 is regulated by other cellular kinases, including the cell cycle regulator kinase. Using mutant alleles of the dbf2 gene, we can manipulate this protein's ability to be phosphorylated or dephosphorylated, thereby altering the downstream effects of the …

Spotted Knapweed (Centaurea Stoebe) Pollen Use-Availability By Bumble Bees In Western Montana, Rustin Bielski
Spotted Knapweed (Centaurea Stoebe) Pollen Use-Availability By Bumble Bees In Western Montana, Rustin Bielski
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Northwest Montana (United States) also known as the last best place, is one of the most pristine habitats for bumble bees, as well as other keystone pollinators. Though, due to anthropogenic influences, wildflower populations in recent years have been fragmented and captivated by exotic invasive plants, which will likely alter and reduce the fecundity of these pollinator species. In Montana, Centaurea stoebe (Spotted Knapweed) has been a very prolific non-native plant due to its ability to displace entire native plant populations. Pollen, due to its nutritional properties, is the most important resource to bumble bees. While some invasive forbs may …

Metformin and statins are currently the focus of large clinical trials testing their ability to counter age-associated declines in health, but recent reports suggest that both may negatively affect skeletal muscle response to exercise. However, it has also been suggested that metformin may act as a possible protectant of statin-related muscle symptoms. The potential impact of combined drug use on the hypertrophic response to resistance exercise in healthy older adults has not been described. We present secondary statin analyses of data from the MASTERS trial where metformin blunted the hypertrophy response in healthy participants (>65 years) following 14 weeks …

Early Childhood Intervention Curriculum Creation: Using Playful Project-Based Learning, Hannah Shullenberger Million
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
The purpose of this study is to present an early intervention curriculum incorporating Project-Based Learning (PBL) and opportunities for play. The project aims to answer the questions: What does a Project-Based Learning curriculum model look like in high quality early childhood special education? How does PBL curriculum work in conjunction with play? The created curriculum answers these questions based on a review of research and guidance from three theoretical frameworks: a Vygotskian Tools of the Mind approach (Bodrova & Leong, 1996), implementation of PBL in early childhood (Lev et al., 2020) and the early intervention Building Blocks framework (Sandall et …

Nonhuman primates (NHP) are particularly important for modeling infections with viruses that do not naturally replicate in rodent cells. Zika virus (ZIKV) has been responsible for sporadic epidemics, but in 2015 a disseminated outbreak of ZIKV resulted in the World Health Organization declaring it a global health emergency. Since the advent of this last epidemic, several NHP species, including the baboon, have been utilized for modeling and understanding the complications of ZIKV infection in humans; several health issues related to the outcome of infection have not been resolved yet and require further investigation. This study was designed to validate, in …

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic disease that impairs blood flow and muscle function in the lower limbs. A skeletal muscle myopathy characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage is present in PAD; however, the underlying mechanisms are not well established. We investigated the impact of chronic ischemia on skeletal muscle microcirculatory function and its association with leg skeletal muscle mitochondrial function and oxygen delivery and utilization capacity in PAD. Gastrocnemius samples and arterioles were harvested from patients with PAD (n = 10) and age-matched controls (Con, n = 11). Endothelium-dependent and independent vasodilation was assessed in response …

The January 2021 edition of PMLA housed an entire cluster on "Indigenous Literatures and the Anthropocene," in which at least four of the eight non-Indigenous contributors directly addressed and supported a call for learning from and collaborating with Indigenous voices. The unanimity of the discussion dissolves somewhat drastically when considering exactly how this should be done, leading Melanie Taylor to voice one of the framing questions of the cluster: "If it is increasingly clear that not all members of Anthropos are equal drivers of the Anthropocene, and that not all are uniformly compromised by its havoc, how can we begin …

Covid-19 And The Americans With Disabilities Act: When Might The Disease Be Considered A Disability For Which Employees Have Legal Protections In The Workplace?, Kimberly J. Jones, Emma M. Feeney
Denver Law Review
Since the coronavirus pandemic began in the United States in early 2020, employers, legal practitioners, federal and state agencies, and the courts have wrangled with whether and in what circumstances workers impacted by COVID-19 (COVID) may have legal protections at work. Because the virus is novel, case law and other legal authorities are scarce. However, these questions are likely to persist well into the future as the virus continues to evolve and the pandemic rages on. This Article explores whether and in what circumstances courts in the Tenth Circuit are likely to treat COVID as a “disability” under the Americans …

Reframing Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence At The Intersections Of Law & Society, Jane S. Bailey, Carys Craig, Suzie Dunn, Sonia Lawrence
Articles & Book Chapters
This special issue of the Canadian Journal of Law and Technology focuses on the growing problem of technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV): an expansive, dynamic, and rapidly evolving phenomenon that Jane Bailey and Carissima Mathen have defined as “a spectrum of behaviours carried out at least in some part through digital communications technologies, including actions that cause physical or psychological harm.” The collection of articles in this issue offers multi-disciplinary insights on TFGBV by bringing together the work of emerging scholars in information and media studies, communications, and law. This approach reflects our firm belief that in order to be meaningful …

Acknowledging The Relevance Of Elephant Sensory Perception To Human–Elephant Conflict Mitigation, Robbie Ball, Sarah L. Jacobson, Matthew S. Rudolph, Miranda Trapani, Joshua M. Plotnik
Publications and Research
Elephants are well known for their socio-cognitive abilities and capacity for multi-modal sensory perception and communication. Their highly developed olfactory and acoustic senses provide them with a unique non-visual perspective of their physical and social worlds. The use of these complex sensory signals is important not only for communication between conspecifics, but also for decisions about foraging and navigation. These decisions have grown increasingly risky given the exponential increase in unpredictable anthropogenic change in elephants’ natural habitats. Risk taking often develops from the overlap of human and elephant habitat in Asian and African range countries, where elephants forage for food …

Indigenous Peoples’ lives, cultures, and values are defined largely by their long-term relationships with the lands, waters, and lifeforms of their territories. Their stories, names, ceremonies, and connections with the plants and animals on which they have depended over countless generations are cornerstones of their knowledge systems, systems of governance and decision-making, traditions of intergenerational knowledge transmission, and values and responsibilities associated with natural and human domains alike. For First Nations of North America’s Northwest Coast, as for many other Indigenous Peoples, the arrival of European newcomers disrupted both the natural world and associated cultural practices in interconnected ways.
