A New Emphasis For The American Dream, Weldon J. Taylor Oct 1962

A New Emphasis For The American Dream, Weldon J. Taylor

BYU Studies

The American ideals of hard work, thrift, and perseverance are rooted in mankind's desire to meet his basic physical needs. Since in today's society these needs are not as pressing, the basic American values have begun to lose their motivating power. Today, the desire to be a creative and valued member of an organization should become a bigger motivator than the simple drive for wealth. Some whose comments have contributed to the idea of this new motivation include O. A. Ohmann, A. A. Stambaugh, Abraham T. Collier, and Stanley F. Teele.

Inspired Constitution, Richard Bushman Jan 1962

Inspired Constitution, Richard Bushman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Latter-day Saints cherish the Constitution of the United States. Though all Americans revere this important document, we believe it was inspired by God. The Lord has said He "established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men...raised up unto this very purpose." Consequently, we believe that constitutional principles are the surest guide in times of political confusion, and that following them is the best way to preserve our liberty.

The War-Making Power: Congress Vs. The President, Van L. Perkins Jan 1962

The War-Making Power: Congress Vs. The President, Van L. Perkins

BYU Studies

Although constitutionally the Congress has the power to declare war, throughout U.S. history the President has usurped this power. Cases such as the Mexican War, the French Naval war, and the China Relief Insurrection before World War I are all instances when the President took the initiative in entering a war without an official declaration by Congress. In the case of both World Wars, presidential policies prior to the wars left little choice to Congress. The article examines the U.S.'s involvement in the Korean War and the Formosan Resolution. In the future, the President must be careful not to overstep …

The Crusades Against The Masons, Catholics, And Mormons: Separate Waves Of A Common Current, Mark W. Cannon Apr 1961

The Crusades Against The Masons, Catholics, And Mormons: Separate Waves Of A Common Current, Mark W. Cannon

BYU Studies

The anti-Catholic movement of the 1850s shares common features with the anti-Masonic movement of the 1830s and the anti-Mormon movement of the 1870s and 1880s. A closer look at these three movements reveals a distrust among nineteenth-century Americans for any small yet unified minority. The author discusses the similarities among the three campaigns and explores reasons why the anti-Mormon crusade was successful when the previous two were not.

A Comprehensive Study To Determine The Teachers' Role In Politics, Hollie Wilford Crawford Jan 1960

A Comprehensive Study To Determine The Teachers' Role In Politics, Hollie Wilford Crawford

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the role, if any, that a teacher should play in the political life of the community. There existed, and still exists, a great variance of opinion even on the part of teachers as to their political role. Some would have teachers set themselves completely apart from anything that even remotely resembles politics. Others would have teachers become deeply involved in the political life of the community. Heretofore no basis for participation in politics has been given other than personal opinion.

Should teachers participate in partisan politics? This single question states …
