Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart Jan 1983

Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart

Theses

The Quality Control Circle attempts to solve management and production problems using a participative management style. This study represents an analysis of how the Quality Control Circle emerged in Japan and efforts in the U. S. to Americanize the concept. It is important to note that participative management represents a single management style. This style is not recommended for every organization. Organizations must select the appropriate management style to accomplish conceived goals and the style must fit within their particular corporate culture. The Quality Control Circle is an outgrowth of participative management and is not-all inclusive of participative management ideals.

Jewish Women Reformers And Jewish Immigrant Women: The Columbian Council Of Pittsburgh, 1893-1920, Eileen Chotiner Jan 1983

Jewish Women Reformers And Jewish Immigrant Women: The Columbian Council Of Pittsburgh, 1893-1920, Eileen Chotiner

Honors Papers

I began this project with an interest in Jewish immigrant women's adjustment to American life. I first examined general patterns of immigration to the United States in the nineteenth century, to determine how Jewish immigration fit into the patterns and specifically, the. role of Jewish women in Jewish immigration. I also sought to discover how Jews differed from other immigrant groups, and how these differences affected the establishment of Jewish communities in America.

Immigration to the United States in the nineteenth century falls into two categories : from approximately 1840 to 1880, immigrants came mostly from northern, western and central …

Public Insurance, Private Insurance, And The Demand For Hospital Care: Implications For Medicare And Private Contracts, Martin Zelder Jan 1983

Public Insurance, Private Insurance, And The Demand For Hospital Care: Implications For Medicare And Private Contracts, Martin Zelder

Honors Papers

The findings of this paper can briefly be summarized. Demand, as measured by hospital admissions rate, is inelastic. Demand, as measured by mean length of stay, is elastic. A given amount of public hospital insurance has a small, but significantly larger effect on demand, by either measure, than an equal amount of private hospital insurance. These estimates can then be applied to several topics. One such topic is the effect of the Reagan Administration's plan to alter the Medicare benefit payment system. A second application measures the welfare loss (Martin Feldstein's phrase) of "excess" hospital insurance coverage, and the gains …

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler Jan 1983

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

This historical/descriptive study analyzes the speaking career of Belle S. Spafford and attempts to document the relationship between her speaking and her influence with her peers. For over fifty years, the dedicated woman served as a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the National Council of Women, briding the gap between the secular and religious world of women. A rhetorical analysis of four speeches indicates the following findings: Mrs. Spafford appealed to her audiences through a focus on shared values; she had credibility because of her positions of authority and used it wisely; she effectively …

Peace Coalition Politics: The Liberal Experiment, 1954-1965, Steven K. Herrine Jan 1982

Peace Coalition Politics: The Liberal Experiment, 1954-1965, Steven K. Herrine

Honors Papers

This study offers an overview of the peace movement in the United States during the decade preceding the Vietnam War. This movement, unlike its forerunners, was led by liberals who attempted to reform the system from within. A coalition of established and new groups was forged, with the major constituencies drawn from world federalists and pacifists. This seemingly unlikely combination is analyzed through historical investigation with some aid from the political science mathematically-based theory of coalition formation. The creation of this coalition was facilitated by their championing of a nuclear test-ban in a period when the health hazards of atmospheric …

Saint Vincent’S First Foundation: The Ladies Of Charity, Collette Padberg, Daniel Hannefin D.C. Jan 1982

Saint Vincent’S First Foundation: The Ladies Of Charity, Collette Padberg, Daniel Hannefin D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul founded the first women’s Confraternity of Charity in 1617 to serve the sick poor’s spiritual and physical needs. When the parish Charities multiplied, Louise de Marillac supervised them, and the Daughters of Charity were founded to assist them. The first group known as the Ladies of Charity began in 1634. They spread to the United States in 1857. Twentieth century efforts there included distributing food, money, and clothing; operating orphanages and day nurseries; and visiting marginalized people. The Association of the Ladies of Charity of the United States (ALCUS) started in 1960. The International Association of Charities …

Recollections Of The Establishment Of The Congregation Of The Mission In The United States, Part 3, Joseph Rosati C.M. Jan 1982

Recollections Of The Establishment Of The Congregation Of The Mission In The United States, Part 3, Joseph Rosati C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Continued from the first two issues, Joseph Rosati’s translated memoirs recount the Vincentians’ first preaching in areas around Bardstown, Kentucky and their 1817─1818 travels throughout the region known as Upper Louisiana. Rosati writes of early ministry to Creoles, English- and French-speaking Catholics, and Native Americans. The diocese’s establishment in St. Louis is described; it was then the diocese of Upper Louisiana. A table of the diocese’s parishes and congregations is also included. Rosati summarizes the increase within the diocese of the Catholic population, clergy, and religious, and Catholic works between 1817 and 1840.

The Evaluation Of Social Programs, Susan L. Hitchcock Apr 1981

The Evaluation Of Social Programs, Susan L. Hitchcock

Honors Theses

In the uncertain economy of today, there is one thing that we all can be sure of, that prices will increase. It is almost inevitable that everything will be effected by inflation: from food to gas to home heating oil. The very quality of the lives that we lead may be altered by the path that the economy of the United States is taking. The recently elected President, Ronald Reagan, has taken as his main task the stabilization of inflation. The improvement of the economy and the balancing of the federal government's budget. In order to meet these goals, President …

Guide To Some Volcanic Terranes In Washington, Idaho, Oregon And Northern California Usgs Circular: 838, Julie M. Donnelly-Nolan, David Alexander Johnston

KIP Articles

This guidebook arose out of a series of field trips held in conjunction with the Pacific Northwest American Geophysical Union meeting held in Bend, Oregon, September 1979. The PNAGU meeting included special volcanology sessions planned by William I. Rose, Jr., Bruce A. Nolf, amd David A. Johnston. Publication of the guidebook volume was originally planned for early 1980 by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI). Inevitable delays, subsequent scheduling problems, and the death of Dave Johnston in the May 18 eruption of Mount St. Helens led to this publication as a USGS Circular. This circular differs from …

A Study Of Selected Antipoverty Interventions Among The United States Poor, Carol A. Garvin Jan 1981

A Study Of Selected Antipoverty Interventions Among The United States Poor, Carol A. Garvin

Theses

This thesis has several components. Its review of antipoverty literature leads-in to a theoretical perspective of the causes, effects, and remediation of poverty in the United States. A small minority of powerful individuals and corporations who monopolize decision- making apparatuses consistently make decisions which nurture unjust, inequitable allocations of the nation's resources. As they protect their vested interests, the socio- economic and political systems which perpetuate the gross economic imbalance between rich and poor are nurtured . The poor (and increasingly , the middle class) are left virtually powerless, even over the decisions which affect their own lives.

In order …
