Mental Health Status Of Vietnamese Refugees In Utah County, Utah, David A. Acree

Theses and Dissertations

This study attempted to measure mental health status of Vietnamese refugees in Utah County, Utah. The test instrument used was the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). Two subproblems were considered: First, to see if refugee complaints on the CMI were predominantly physiological or psychological. Second, to see if there was a relationship between CMI scores and a related list of demographic variables.

Results showed the mean CMI score for the sample under study was well above the suggested score indicative of possible psychological dysfunction. For 80% of participants, psychological complaints were predominant over physical complaints. The only variables showing a relationship …

Herbert Matthews And The New York Times On The Making Of Castro's Revolution, 1952-1959., Sylvia Lee Weed

All ETDs from UAB

The relationship which exists between the press and foreign policy in American political life has been and still is the subject of much debate. The degree of influence which the press exerts on the State Department has been perceived as ranging from non-existent to powerful enough to topple governments. For example, in 1949, the Communist forces of Mao Zse-dong drove the Nationalist Army of Chiang Kai-shek from the mainland of China. Press exposure of corruption, impotence, and waste of United States money and matériel was reportedly influential in Washington's decision to withdraw its support from Chiang, causing many Americans to …

Alcohol-Related Arrests In Birmingham., Robert L. Berry

All ETDs from UAB

Criminologists and historians generally conclude that the present is neither the best nor the worst as far as crime is concerned. Durkheim (1964) made a memorable observation on the inevitability of criminal acts when he said, "Crime is normal because a society exempt from it is utterly impossible" (p. 67).

The Daughters Of Charity At Carville: 1896–1981, Daniel Hannefin D.C. Jan 1981

The Daughters Of Charity At Carville: 1896–1981, Daniel Hannefin D.C.

Vincentian Studies

This article gives the history of the Louisiana Leper Home, later U.S. Marine Hospital No. 66, and profiles the Daughters of Charity who ran it and provided exceptional health care. The Sisters of Charity and patients faced tremendous hardships. Both groups worked to change public perceptions of Hansen’s Disease (formerly known as leprosy) and policies rooted in prejudice and fear. Patients were originally isolated from the world and from each other. This changed thanks to the sisters’ and residents’ efforts, and the facility served more outpatients. Important research into the disease’s transmission and treatment was also conducted there.

Women's Liberation: Is It Smashing The Hothouse?, Wendy Tarnoff

Honors Papers

Since this paper has concentrated on the cultural and societal influences on women's roles, and how these affect their criminal behavior, these variables rather than exclusively economic ones, will be presented now in relatively economic homogeneous contexts. The remaining discussion will, therefore, compare the patterns and trends of female criminal behavior in England-Wales and Japan with those in the United States. A final note will be made on some research done by Safilios-Rothschild in Greece concerning socio-cultural changes which have occurred in Greece, and how they have affected the commission of "honor crimes."

Recollections Of The Establishment Of The Congregation Of The Mission In The United States, Part 1, Joseph Rosati C.M.

Joseph Rosati accompanied Felix De Andreis on the first mission to the United States from 1816 to 1818. Rosati held many important positions, succeeding De Andreis as superior of the American Vincentians. This first translation of his memoirs covers why the Vincentians were selected to found a seminary in St. Louis and the European part of their journey to America. The discussion of De Andreis’s reasons for accepting the mission and his preparations for it includes a transcription of his own words. The account of the journey describes the hardships the Vincentians faced and the people who helped them along …

The Effects Of United States Inter-American Policy On U.S. Relations With Chile, 1958-1978, Michael Hunter Brown

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is an examination and explanation of United States relations with Chile from 1958-1978. The policy of U.S. opposition to the Chilean left, especially during the government of Marxist Salvador Allende from 1970-1973, and support of anti-Marxist forces in Chile, which included a repressive military dictatorship established by a coup in 1973, reflect the overall themes of anti-Marxism and protection of American economic interests inherent in U.S. global and inter-American policy since the Second World War. The major sources of information for this study are reports from investigations and hearings conducted by the United States Congress, especially Covert Action …

Japanese Attitudes Towards Commerical Agreements With The People's Republic Of China, Lewis Marks, Masaru Ono

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

This article intends to demonstrate the similarity of Japanese and Chinese attitudes towards contractual agreements by contrasting Japan-.P.R.C. agreements with Japan-United States and Japan-third world agreements. This similarity of attitudes, the structural support framework for bilateral trade, technology, and after-sales service can explain Japan's success in trading with the P.R.C.

High-Level Radioactive Waste Management: The Nuclear Dilemma, Richard C. Ausness Jan 1979

High-Level Radioactive Waste Management: The Nuclear Dilemma, Richard C. Ausness

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The United States is faced with a nuclear dilemma. On the one hand, nuclear power seems to be the only significant energy source that is presently capable of meeting the country's electrical energy needs. On the other hand, it is uncertain whether the United States has the technological and managerial capability to make nuclear power reliable and safe. In view of this situation, the United States should begin to develop less dangerous alternatives such as solar power. But development of an efficient solar energy system may require 30 years or more. In the meantime, the United States must learn to …

Approaches To Bilateral Loan Agreements Between Developed And Developing States: Some Lessons From The Practice Of Denmark, The United Kingdom And The United States, A. O. Adede

Dalhousie Law Journal

An earlier study,' relying upon texts of bilateral loan agreements concluded between Denmark and certain developing countries, 2 and between the United Kingdom and certain developing countries, 3 discloses that there is a need for further examination of the subject for the purposes of updating and assessing the trend of developments in this area of international law. This paper is accordingly designed to offer comparative analysis of the more recent approaches to bilateral loan agreements concluded by Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States with a number of developing countries. The selection of these three developed, market economy States …
