Climate change and biodiversity loss require us to engage the next generation of scientists in addressing global ecological issues. Introducing undergraduate students to citizen science allows them to learn scientific processes and content while contributing to real-world applications. We conducted a systematic review of literature to (1) identify what types of undergraduate courses and institutions use citizen science, (2) list the projects and platforms that have been implemented in online courses in undergraduate education, (3) examine how students participated in the projects through online courses, and (4) summarize learning objectives and reported benefits of student participation. In all, 44 studies …

Introducing Hyflex Teaching In Geotechnical Engineering, Juan Pablo Osorio Jul 2025

Introducing Hyflex Teaching In Geotechnical Engineering, Juan Pablo Osorio

Case studies: Digital Education

Geotechnical Engineering 2 is a third-year technical module in the BE in Civil Engineering and the BE in Structural Engineering, and it covers the theoretical and practical aspects of the retaining wall stability, foundation design and compressibility of soils. The two classes are merged together for it. It uses lectures, laboratories and tutorials as teaching methods. The module has 36 hours of direct contact and 64 hours of self-directed learning. It is a semester 2 core module that follows Geotechnical Engineering 1. The mode of delivery for both modules is in-person lectures at the lecture hall, with three laboratory practices …

The Engineering Mindset: Blueprint For Change, Vol. 1: Institutional Guidelines For Implementing Change In Undergraduate Engineering And Engineering Technology Education, Rebecca Bates, Ron Ulseth

Integrated Engineering Department Publications

Volume 1 of the Blueprint Report presents a comprehensive framework for transforming undergraduate engineering and engineering technology education in the United States. It builds on the 2024 Engineering Mindset Report and provides institutional-level strategies to implement its recommendations. The goal is to create a student-centered curriculum, increase access and success for underserved students, and create a future-ready engineering education system that broadens access and aligns with societal and technological needs.

Evidence In Support Of Adaptive Learning For Pre-Class Preparation In A Flipped Stem Classroom, Renee M. Clark, Autar Kaw, Andrew Scott, Saurav Kumar, Ali Yalcin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Adaptive learning supports online instruction by offering feedback to students using machine learning. In a funded study, adaptive learning was used in a flipped STEM course at three universities for pre-class preparation. We conducted a comparative analysis with and without adaptive learning. The assessments were a final exam and concept inventory (stratified demographically) and affective questions from the College and University Classroom Environment Inventory, focus groups, and evaluation survey. This study found classroom environment enhancement with adaptive learning, with Task Orientation and Satisfaction exhibiting significant changes at two universities. We found enhanced perspectives with adaptive learning, including increased preference for …

My German Experiences, Katie Herbel May 2025

My German Experiences, Katie Herbel

2024-2025 Field Notes

While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield University write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Katie Herbel describes observations during their study abroad program at the University of Nurtingen-Geislingen in Nurtingen, Germany.
