Student Perceptions Of Authoring A Publication Stemming From A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (Cure), Ashley N. Turner, Anil K. Challa, Katelyn M. Cooper
Student Perceptions Of Authoring A Publication Stemming From A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (Cure), Ashley N. Turner, Anil K. Challa, Katelyn M. Cooper
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) engage students in authentic research experiences in a course format and can sometimes result in the publication of that research. However, little is known about student-author perceptions of CURE publications. In this study, we examined how students perceive they benefit from authoring a CURE publication and what they believe is required for authorship of a manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal. All 16 students who were enrolled in a molecular genetics CURE during their first year of college participated in semistructured interviews during their fourth year. At the time of the interviews, students had been authors …
Does Mandatory Auditor Tenure Disclosure Improve Audit Quality?, Anushka Shrestha
Does Mandatory Auditor Tenure Disclosure Improve Audit Quality?, Anushka Shrestha
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) recently made a significant change to the audit report standard (Accounting Standard 3101). It requires auditors to disclose their tenure, known as the auditor tenure disclosure, with the company under audit. It also requires auditors to disclose Critical Audit Matter (CAMs). The auditor tenure disclosure became effective December 15, 2017, and the CAM disclosure became effective June 30, 2019, for large accelerated filers and December 15, 2020, for all other filers. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether and how the implementation of Accounting Standard 3101 (AS 3101) affects audit quality. …

Comparing Effectiveness And Perceived Characteristics Of Active Learning Methods In Undergraduate Biology Education, Linda R. Pesciotta
Comparing Effectiveness And Perceived Characteristics Of Active Learning Methods In Undergraduate Biology Education, Linda R. Pesciotta
Dissertations - ALL
Although many undergraduates begin college as STEM majors, attrition rates from the field are high and numerous reports suggest that evidence-based teaching methods are critical for retention. Despite educators' research and near consensus that active learning is more effective than lecture, there are many types of active learning and the literature indicates their effects are not equivalent. The purpose of the current study was to directly compare different kinds of active learning by assessing their correlation with student performance (including learning gains) and understanding students' perceptions of them (including whether they contained Merrill's five principles of instruction and/or met three …

This study highlights Latinx student experiences, through storytelling, to identify existing services and resources aiding Latinx academic success at the University of San Diego (USD), while also exploring what additional resources are needed to aid Latinx scholars’ belonging and mattering at a Catholic, predominantly White institution (PWI). Latinx student enrollment rates at colleges and universities have increased nationwide, leading institutions to consider the Hispanic -serving Institution (HSI) federal designation to gain access to discretionary grant opportunities. For HSI designation, institutions must have at least 25% of their student population categorized as Hispanic, and 50% of Hispanic students must be Pell …
The Differences Between County-Level Healthcare Resources In Urban And Rural Counties And The County-Level Mortality Rate Of Cerebrovascular Disease In Texas, Linda Nguyen
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Cerebrovascular disease is a leading cause of death globally. It is not clear if cerebrovascular disease mortality, and human and material resources that could affect it, differ across rural and urban Texas counties. The purpose of the study was to determine county-level differences between rural-urban cerebrovascular disease mortality in Texas and how differences were correlated with human and material resources. Human resources included rates of neurologists, neurosurgeons, physician assistants, registered nurses, and nurse practitioners. Material resources included rates of beds, hospitals with intensive care units, and hospitals with cardiac intensive care units. Bivariate scatterplots and Spearman's correlations indicated a weak, …

Creation Of Classification Model For Use In An Automated Document Classification System Using Machine Learning, Sandesh Koirala
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Commercial document processing is very expensive and prone to human errors. Despite the presence of various machine learning algorithms for object classification, their performance and feasibility can vary widely based on their implementation and use case. This paper encompasses the performance evaluation of various classification algorithms for use in an automated electronic document classification system. The subject algorithms were used to classify about 1000 vectorized documents in an iterative environment. Various performance measures such as precision, recall, and F-measure were used to evaluate these algorithms. It was found that most algorithms obtained more than 95% accuracy. However, Logistic Regression was …
Using Ultra Wide Band Sensor For Robot Localization, Binoy George
Using Ultra Wide Band Sensor For Robot Localization, Binoy George
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
While GPS stands as the most popular localization tool in our present world, its feasibility in technologies like self-driving cars comes into question due to its unreliability in certain environments and weather conditions. In this research, Ultra Wide Band (UWB) is explored as an alternative localization technology. Using a 4-Anchors 1-Tag UWB system, a localization algorithm in three-dimensional space will be developed and implemented on a moving robot. For this experiment, the Decawave’s DWM1000 UWB transceivers and the Turtlebot2i will be used. The position of the robot calculated by this algorithm will be observed, first when the robot is kept …
Future Time Perspective And Participation In Group Activities In Assisted Living Communities Using Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, Rebecca Stewart
Future Time Perspective And Participation In Group Activities In Assisted Living Communities Using Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, Rebecca Stewart
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
In assisted living communities (ALCs), participation in group activities is promoted and encouraged due to the knowledge we have thus far on the benefits of social engagement. Socioemotional selectivity theory, a popular social engagement theory, suggests that how long a person feels they have left to live (also known as their future time perspective) determines how they utilize their remaining time. Using this theory, it is presumed that an assisted living resident with a low future time perspective will participate in fewer group activities offered within the ALC. After controlling for participants without cognitive impairments, a quantitative secondary data analysis …
Sensitivity Analysis And Mathematical Modeling For Tailored Colon Cancer Treatment, Juan Villegas
Sensitivity Analysis And Mathematical Modeling For Tailored Colon Cancer Treatment, Juan Villegas
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths amongst men and women. A data-driven Quantitative and Systems Pharmacology model is used to provide treatment for each individual patient using gene expression data from primary tumor samples. Using uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, a prediction of the efficacy of a personal treatment could be obtained. A Latin hypercube sampling-partial rank correlation method, using a Normal distribution, was used to conduct the sensitivity analysis. It was found that the most sensitive parameter was the day-1 of cancer. This assists researchers to suggest an optimal treatment …
Comparing Approximate Total Current Of The Dayside Magnetopause And The J X B Force To Solar Wind Pressure, Michelle Xuan Bui
Comparing Approximate Total Current Of The Dayside Magnetopause And The J X B Force To Solar Wind Pressure, Michelle Xuan Bui
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The solar wind pushes against Earth’s magnetic field to form a cavity called the magnetosphere, which contains Earth’s dipole field. The magnetopause is the boundary between the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and Earth’s dipole field, and its shape and location are dependent upon pressure balance. At the magnetopause, the Chapman-Ferraro current layer flows, balancing the pressure of the solar wind and accounting for the change of the magnetic field. The total current of the magnetopause fluctuates due to changes in the magnitude of solar wind magnetic field and the solar wind dynamic pressure. This study observes the approximate total current …
Potspot: Sky Detection And Result Visualization, Ashwitha Kassetty
Potspot: Sky Detection And Result Visualization, Ashwitha Kassetty
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Many beginner planters face difficulties in choosing suitable plants for their home environment. Our mobile application ‘PotSpot’ is designed to make this process easier. The application calculates the amount of sunlight based on the picture of the user's desired planting area at home. Once the user uploads a picture of the possible planting location and its surroundings, the device's orientation sensors help determine its geographic location. These stored pictures are then overlaid with the sun's path and converted to black and white images. Our algorithm analyses these pictures and calculates the amount of sunlight present in the area. These results …
Computational Geometry Insights Into Monte-Carlo Simulation Methods, Nabin Chapagain
Computational Geometry Insights Into Monte-Carlo Simulation Methods, Nabin Chapagain
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
In Monte-Carlo simulation, we often need an estimate of the domain of the target objective function of the sample. We want to constrain the domain within a specific shape to sample more points from it, efficiently. That is why it is good to bind the domain of the objective function that we are trying to sample from. This research aims to develop an unsupervised clustering algorithm that works on a multidimensional dataset and gives considerable output using far less time than other similar algorithms, decreasing computational expenses by a significant amount. The algorithm gives us the predicted number of ellipsoids, …

Parametric Sizing Analysis Of A Rocket Single Stage To Orbit Vehicle, Josue Vazquez
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Space tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the aerospace industry. Both orbital and sub-orbital platforms are being considered to market to the public. The goal of this project is to perform a Parametric Sizing (PS) analysis for a Two-Stage-to-Sub-Orbit (TSTSO) and Single-Stage-to-Orbit (SSTO) rocket powered system. PS is the starting point from where an idea, the planned mission, and a blank slate are shaped by designers into a solution space and final design point for the vehicle. The Hypersonic Convergence (HC) method was chosen because of its integrated approach to sizing the vehicle by solving a weight …
