Non-Cognitive Factors Affecting Undergraduate Student Success In Core Composition Courses, Samantha J. Spitak
Non-Cognitive Factors Affecting Undergraduate Student Success In Core Composition Courses, Samantha J. Spitak
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The intention of this study was to determine what, if any, non-cognitive factors affect student performance in core composition courses. "Non-cognitive factor" is a term referring to non-academic and non-intellectual characteristics of a student's experience. These factors may be emotional, environmental, psychosocial, etc. Some prior research has been conducted on non-cognitive factors relating to admission of minority populations, but this research is likely to be outdated. Six potential non-cognitive factors were proposed for this study: Confidence, Motivation, Socioeconomic Class, Emotional Support, Campus Climate, and Living Situation. The results of this study indicated that non-cognitive factors do influence student performance in …

Interactions Of Protist And Bacteria: A Mathematical Model, Matthew Le
Interactions Of Protist And Bacteria: A Mathematical Model, Matthew Le
2014 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Relationships between interacting organisms generally have several key variables that describe the dynamics of their specific relationship. And the results from those symbiotic relationships are important in that both species are affected in a significant, observable way. With this in mind, it is found that the characteristic actions of each of the two species affect the population size of both species. This effect, caused by the species' actions and interactions is qualitatively noted and is further interpreted and quantized. The complicated relationship between a predator and its prey is broken down and analyzed to give better insight to the projected …

Undergraduate science programs are not providing graduates with the knowledgebase and skills they need to be successful on today’s job market. Curricular changes relevant to today’s marketplace and more opportunities for internships and work experience during students’ secondary education would facilitate a smoother transition to the working world and help employers find graduates that possess both the hard and soft skills needed in the workplace. In this article, we discuss these issues and offer solutions that would generate more marketplace-ready undergraduates.

Survey On The Prevalence Of Measurement In Undergraduate Psychology Curricula Across The United States, Kevin A. Dahlman
Survey On The Prevalence Of Measurement In Undergraduate Psychology Curricula Across The United States, Kevin A. Dahlman
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
For several years, especially with the increasing use of high-stakes assessments, the high demand for qualified testing specialists has far exceeded the low supply, naturally resulting in a severe shortage of quantitative psychologists. One possible solution for combatting this imbalance is to increase the exposure of psychometric methods within national curricula for educating undergraduate students of psychology. Therefore, the current study seeks to assess the prevalence of psychological measurement across national undergraduate psychology curricula, since it has not been evaluated for roughly 15 years. Six hundred fifty psychology department chairpersons across the United States were emailed invitations to complete a …

Promoting Reu Participation From Students In Underrepresented Groups, Heather M. Russell, Heather A. Dye
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Research experiences for undergraduates (REUs) are an important component of undergraduate education. However, at the 2012 Trends in Undergraduate Research in the Mathematical Sciences conference, questions were raised about why many REU programs see few applications from students that are members of underrepresented groups. We examine the benefits of REUs and factors preventing or promoting participation in REUs.
Explicit Instruction Of Scientific Explanation And Argument In An Undergraduate Introductory Biology Laboratory Course Using The Claim, Evidence And Reasoning Framework, Rosemary Eva Becker
Explicit Instruction Of Scientific Explanation And Argument In An Undergraduate Introductory Biology Laboratory Course Using The Claim, Evidence And Reasoning Framework, Rosemary Eva Becker
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Scientific explanation and scientific argument are important aspects of science inquiry and science education. Though students of all ages find construction of written scientific explanations and arguments difficult, explicit instruction in scientific explanation and argument can improve student ability. This quantitative research study used a non-equivalent comparison group design to investigate the affect of explicit instruction of scientific explanation and argument in an undergraduate introductory biology laboratory course, using a college level appropriate modified CER Framework (McNeill et al., 2006). This study compared students receiving explicit instruction in scientific explanation and argument with students taking traditionally-designed biology laboratory courses. Students …
21st-Century U.S. Safety Professional Educational Standards: Establishing Minimum Baccalaureate Graduate Learning Outcomes For Emerging Occupational Health And Safety Professionals, Wayne Edward Hartz
21st-Century U.S. Safety Professional Educational Standards: Establishing Minimum Baccalaureate Graduate Learning Outcomes For Emerging Occupational Health And Safety Professionals, Wayne Edward Hartz
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
How can the public be assured of competency in those professing to protect its occupational health and safety (OSH)? Currently, in the U.S. there are 193 higher education OSH programs, 186 with baccalaureate degrees with over 55 different degree titles. This research seeks to define minimum OSH baccalaureate graduate core competencies across all programs by asking: What would employers look for in a portfolio to demonstrate competence in a new OSH graduate? Professional members of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) participated as subject matter experts in an anonymous online survey to provide framing data. The ASSE Educational Standards …
Introductory Biology Course Reform: A Tale Of Two Courses, Michele I. Shuster Phd, Ralph Preszler
Introductory Biology Course Reform: A Tale Of Two Courses, Michele I. Shuster Phd, Ralph Preszler
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Over the past eight years we have undertaken iterative cycles of course reform in two introductory biology courses: Biology 111 and Biology 211. Our revisions of these formerly “traditional” lecture courses have included in-class case studies with and without peer facilitators and peer-facilitated small-group workshops.
Based on analyses of overall pass rates, as well as pass rates by gender and by underrepresented minority (URM) status, we have found that there are differences in the effectiveness of alternative course models in the two courses. In Biol 111, required peer-facilitated workshops improved overall student performance, especially for URM and female students (Preszler, …

Effects Of Instructional Model On Student Attitude In An Introductory Biology Laboratory, Stephen M. Rybczynski, Elisabeth E. Schussler
Effects Of Instructional Model On Student Attitude In An Introductory Biology Laboratory, Stephen M. Rybczynski, Elisabeth E. Schussler
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This study assessed student attitude towards reformed laboratories featuring a factorial design of inquiry (IN) and explicit / reflective (ER) pedagogy to foster nature of science understanding. Students in thirty-one lab sections responded to pre and post semester assessments of their confidence, perception of usefulness, and effectance motivation toward the laboratories. Relative change in attitude (RCA) was not significantly different (p>0.05) among the treatments or their interaction for confidence, usefulness, or effectance motivation. Student self-reports (n = 137) of factors that affected their attitude suggested that grades and TAs played a larger role in determining student attitude than the …

An Undergraduate Mentoring Environment For Empirical Software Engineering Research, Dr. Charles Knutson
An Undergraduate Mentoring Environment For Empirical Software Engineering Research, Dr. Charles Knutson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In 2008 I was awarded a MEG entitled “An Undergraduate Mentoring Environment for Empirical Software Engineering Research.” In the several years that followed that award I was able to provide financial support to six undergraduate students. The results have been incredibly successful and gratifying. Of those students who received support from that MEG award, three continued research as graduate students in the SEQuOIA Lab— two are currently PhD candidates and the third is completing an MS degree. The other three students completed BS degrees and are currently employed as software engineers at Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon. These six mentored undergraduate …

Incorporating Industry Needs Into The Development Of An Undergraduate Degree In Commercial Space Operations, Yash Bipinchandra Mehta
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The rapid expansion of the commercial space industry, not unlike the aviation industry in the early 20th century, has left the industry facing unique challenges. As companies continue to expand, the need for a well-trained workforce becomes critical. The needed workforce must be specifically educated to enter the commercial space industry at graduation. To have a successful industry, a workforce must be trained in skills that meet the industry's needs. In that regard, this study consisted of a survey of leaders in the commercial space industry to identify the different skill-sets sought by the industry. The results of the …
