A Mathematical Model Of Recycling, Amanda Patrick
A Mathematical Model Of Recycling, Amanda Patrick
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
As epidemic-type mathematical models have been previously used to study diseases, rumors and behaviors, their application will be further applied to study recycling influence. The types of influences taken into account were recyclers influencing non- recyclers to recycle, recyclers influencing other recyclers to quit recycling (recycling discouragement), and advertisements influencing non-recyclers to recycle. Generally, autonomous differential equations can be analyzed by calculating the equilibrium solutions and finding the eigenvalues to determine stability. The recycling population at UTA was modeled for constant and changing population. The average population increase and decrease were calculated for the system with constant population to calculate …
Canterbury On The Airwaves: Anglican Radio Broadcasting In The United States, Lorenzo Marconi
Canterbury On The Airwaves: Anglican Radio Broadcasting In The United States, Lorenzo Marconi
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Most literature on Christian radio focuses on Evangelicals and Roman Catholics; however, Anglicans have been on the airwaves longest. Despite this, Anglican radio is much rarer than Evangelical or Catholic radio, historically and currently. There is little academic literature to establish why this is the case. Using in-depth interviews with Anglican clergy who currently broadcast, or who have broadcast on the radio, this thesis examines reasons for the lack of Anglican radio and what it would take to increase its presence. Findings indicate the main causes of Anglican radio’s scarcity are Anglicans’ overall lack of interest in radio, a lack …
Comparison Of The Newbery And Bluebonnet Awards In Children’S Literature, Kinsley Munoz
Comparison Of The Newbery And Bluebonnet Awards In Children’S Literature, Kinsley Munoz
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Teachers are presented with an increasing amount of quality children’s literature for their classrooms. The Newbery and Bluebonnet book awards are two reputable awards that serve as resources for teachers in selecting books to use in their classrooms. This study sought to determine what features teachers could expect to find in either award, thus helping them narrow down their search for quality children’s literature. The researcher looked at features including theme, genre, text features, text length, readability, and interest level. The study found that the Bluebonnet Award winners are usually lighthearted, shorter, and of lower readability and interest level. Their …
Depreciation Of The Naira Against The Dollar, Olufunke Ogunjobi
Depreciation Of The Naira Against The Dollar, Olufunke Ogunjobi
2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Over the years, the value of Nigerian currency, the naira, has declined against the United States dollar by over 50%, a move that has impacted the Nigerian people, sometimes negatively. There are several different possible reasons why the naira has depreciated against dollar. In an attempt to identify potential causes, historical data will be used to derive an empirical model. The empirical model is based on three important longrun equilibrium relationships in international economics, purchasing power parity (PPP), uncovered interest parity (UIP) and stable money demand. The evidence presented suggests an important role for the Nigerian income, United States money …
Successful Female Students In Undergraduate Computer Science And Computer Engineering: Motivation, Self-Regulation, And Qualitative Characteristics, Melissa Patterson Hazley
Successful Female Students In Undergraduate Computer Science And Computer Engineering: Motivation, Self-Regulation, And Qualitative Characteristics, Melissa Patterson Hazley
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Computer Science (CS) and Computer Engineering (CE) fields typically have not been successful at recruiting or retaining women students. Research indicates several reasons for this shortage but mainly from three perspectives: social issues, exposure/prior knowledge and curriculum issues in K-12 settings. This mixed-methods research addresses a gap in the literature by investigating the motivation and self-regulation behaviors of successful female students who are studying computer science and computer engineering. The findings in phase one of this study indicated that learning and performance approach goals predicted adaptive strategic self-regulation behaviors including strategy use, knowledge building and engagement. Learning avoidance goals predicted …

A Framework For Understanding The Characteristics Of Complexity In Biology, Joseph Dauer, Jenny Dauer
A Framework For Understanding The Characteristics Of Complexity In Biology, Joseph Dauer, Jenny Dauer
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Understanding the functioning of natural systems is not easy, although there is general agreement that understanding complex systems is an important goal for science education. Defining what makes a natural system complex will assist in identifying gaps in research on student reasoning about systems. The goal of this commentary is to propose a framework that explicitly defines the ways in which biological systems are complex and to discuss the potential relevance of these complexity dimensions to conducting research on student reasoning about complexity in biology classrooms. We use an engineering framework for dimensions of complexity and discuss how this framework …

Surviving And Thriving: The First-Year Transition Experiences Of Chinese Undergraduate Students In The United States, Kerrie Anne Montgomery
Surviving And Thriving: The First-Year Transition Experiences Of Chinese Undergraduate Students In The United States, Kerrie Anne Montgomery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The number of international students pursuing degrees at U.S. institutions at the undergraduate level surpassed those at the graduate level for the first time in 2013. Additionally, the majority of international students coming to the U.S. are from China. This phenomenological study used a conceptual framework of Schlossberg's Transition Model (1995) and the Culturally Engaging Campus Environments Model (Museus, 2014) to analyze the experiences of Chinese undergraduate students in their first year of college in the United States. Three transition types were identified - academic, social/personal, and linguistic - and the students' preparation, sources of institutional support, and coping strategies …

Understanding, Evaluating, And Diagnosing Undergraduate Student Difficulties With Graph Choice And Construction, Aakanksha Angra
Open Access Dissertations
Creating effective graphical representations of biological data is an essential component in the practices of science and involves engaging concepts and skills of quantitative literacy. With undergraduate biology students increasingly involved in scientific inquiry and experimentation, they are faced with the task of choosing and creating appropriate graphical representations of their data to communicate their findings. However, difficulties with graph choice and construction that were previously documented in literature, still exist today at both the K-12 and undergraduate levels. The purpose of this dissertation is to understand the reasoning involved behind choosing certain graph types and the process that occurs …

Design For A Variable Pipe Cutting Jig, Truitt Ammons
2015 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Parker-Hannifin is an aerospace company located in Fort Worth, Texas. A large part of their business entails creating custom metal pipes that are used for aerospace applications. These pipes are all bent and cut at different specifications. Currently, the method being used to cut these pipes takes a lot of storage space, it is lengthy, it uses unsafe methodology and it adds up to be costly. My team and I were commissioned by Parker-Hannifin to design a system that will alleviate these problems. The solution that this team has proposed will save the company storage space, lower the time it …

Designing The Atlas Forward Proton Detector Through Simulations, Timothy Hoffman
Designing The Atlas Forward Proton Detector Through Simulations, Timothy Hoffman
2015 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Particle physics uses powerful particle colliders to investigate building blocks of the universe that we would otherwise be unable to inspect. This research consists of developing the ATLAS Forward Proton (AFP) system intended for installation at the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, Switzerland. The AFP system includes a time-of-flight (TOF) detector specifically designed for the measurement of a certain class of collision events which have been heretofore largely invisible to the ATLAS experiment. We use the TOF of protons which pass through our detector to correlate them with a collision in the central ATLAS detector. …

Courtship In The Borderlands: Hollistic Intimate Space Creation Within Courtship Ideaologies, Alejandro Sánchez
The Compass
While telling me the story of how she met her husband, Mrs. Aguilar told me “I really feel bad for your generation, they are missing out on falling in love.” She was referring to the courtship practices, or the social regulation and cultural markers between two individuals who create a social relation developing a “relationship.”1 She was comparingthe courtship practices of her generation to that of mine and her statement is reflective of the changes in the cultural environment. From courting, a “relationship” can develop. Its dimensions are defined by the mediation between cultural norms and the agent, and can …
Strategies For Leaders To Counter Social Loafing Through The Use Of Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Literature Review, Richard Hildreth
Strategies For Leaders To Counter Social Loafing Through The Use Of Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Literature Review, Richard Hildreth
The Compass
Social loafing (SL) is a counterintuitive phenomenon that describes a decrease of efficiency observed in both small groups and large organizations. Research over the past century has increased our understanding of SL and identified antecedent factors that appear to reduce or exacerbate its effect. Subsequent organizational models have beenconceived and evolved, starting with organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), which led toward contextualperformance (CP), and recently to contextual and citizenship performance (CCP). Each type of model can provide valuable insight explaining employee behavior and under which contexts SL occurs. Research shows that OCB has improves organizational productivity and competitiveness, due to organizational …

Oak Regeneration In An Eastern Pennsylvania Forest: Is Prescribed Fire Needed?, Samanatha M. Ebert
The Compass
Fire has shaped the American landscape as much as any other natural or anthropogenic disturbance such as flooding, glaciers, and tornadoes, or logging. Native Americans used fire for thousand of years to facilitate farming, travel, and hunting. Since the 1930s, the United States Forest Service has instituted and maintained a policy of firesuppression. This has changed the composition of American forests allowing shade- tolerant later successional species to thrive, but fire-adapted species are declining. This study establishes a baseline of tree composition of State Game Lands 210 in Dauphin County in Eastern Pennsylvania forest in preparation for the proposed controlled …
Drinking And Game Day: The Expansion And Solution To Alcohol Abuse In Collegiate Sporting Events, Karan Arul
Drinking And Game Day: The Expansion And Solution To Alcohol Abuse In Collegiate Sporting Events, Karan Arul
The Compass
For the typical American sports fans, a night out to watch a college sporting event involves a celebration of athleticism, spirit, and teamwork. However, as of the 21st century, the act of purchasing and consuming alcohol has become increasingly complimentary to “enjoying the game” in a collegiate sports stadium. In the United States, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the frontrunner in proliferating collegiate athletics. Yet, the NCAA and its over 1200 member schools “enjoy great profitability from selling and advertising alcohol.”1 As college sporting events continue to rival their professional counterparts in popularity and allegiance, attending a college …
