Love At A Distance: Exploring Perceptions Of Long-Distance Relationships Through Q Methodology, Ljubica Ivanovic Klobcic
Theses and Dissertations
With technology advancing and making it easier for individuals to connect and keep in touch, long-distance romantic relationships (LDRRs) have become increasingly common. While some people thrive in these relationships despite physical separation, others find the experience stressful and unsatisfying. This study explores how individuals perceive and navigate LDRRs and what their experiences are. Using Q methodology, participants sorted and ranked statements related to their experiences. Factor analysis revealed three unique groups: Traditional Romantics, who see their relationships in traditional terms despite technology use; Debbie Downers, who perceive distance as a burden and do not feel that technology improves their …

Facilitating Bedroom Recording Practices, Christopher William Bulgren, Jason C. Fick
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
An increase in access to recording technology has expanded opportunities for teachers and students. One approach, bedroom recording, involves the use of low-budget hardware and software in common, untreated spaces, often in one’s home. Bedroom recording practices significantly impact the sense of place and workflow in the industry for both professionals and amateur music makers. As an art form that thrives on mobility, bedroom recording is a natural pathway for music students to achieve low-cost, self-guided recordings. The purpose of this study was to explore best practices and student interactions related to a bedroom recording project. Participants were 17 Music …

Attorneys And Ai: How Lawyers Use Artificial Intelligence And Analyze Its Impacts, Matthew I. Hall, Christian Turner, Eddie A. Gomez Schieber, Nathaniel Kite, Ari Schlesinger
Scholarly Works
AI systems are testing lawyers' professional ethics obligations of competence, confidentiality, and candor. In the legal profession, the widespread availability of AI systems presents opportunities, like improving the review of documents during the discovery stage of a lawsuit, and challenges, illustrated by the handful of high-profile incidents where lawyers submitted legal briefs in court citing and describing fictitious cases based on AI-generated output. We conducted interviews with 44 legal professionals in the U.S. to understand how attorneys are making sense of AI technology and the impacts these technologies are having on their profession, legal ethics, and legal institutions. We describe …
Technology Discontinuance: A Systematic Literature Review And Research Agenda, Birgit Altrichter, Sabine Benoit
Technology Discontinuance: A Systematic Literature Review And Research Agenda, Birgit Altrichter, Sabine Benoit
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Technology discontinuance by users who quit digital services such as social media or lose interest in their devices after a few weeks is a common phenomenon. Yet it has received little research attention; the few studies that address it are scattered across disciplines. Research into customer churn is more prevalent, but it implies switching providers rather than halting usage altogether. By moving beyond discipline-based knowledge boundaries and conducting a systematic literature review, the current article proposes a technology discontinuance framework, which details seven technology discontinuance types (overuse, overload, proficiency, disenchantment, social, circumstantial, and solution) and their drivers. For example, guilt …

Agency Cost And Smart City Initiatives In Virginia: A Case Study, Jordan M. Peters
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this case study will be to solve the problem of agency costs in three of Virginia’s largest Smart Cities and to formulate a solution for public administrators to implement during smart city development. This case study contributes to existing public administration knowledge by expanding upon post-progressive public administration theory by acknowledging the preferences of public administrators and the role those preferences play in the adoption of SCI priorities. While scholarly literature increasingly insists that the preferences of citizens drive SCI, this clashes with the post-progressive public administration theory proposed by Miller (1994) which acknowledges the influence of …
Live Wires: The Angelus Temple And The Timbre Of Power, Catherine Provenzano
Live Wires: The Angelus Temple And The Timbre Of Power, Catherine Provenzano
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
This article is a media history and contemporary case study of The Angelus Temple in Los Angeles, founded by Aimee Semple McPherson in 1923. My analysis of the Angelus insists upon the centrality of a hyperaudible paradigm of worship that uses media to maximize the legibility of a Christian message, and, more than this, imagines that media itself as a living soul in need of redemption. Many contemporary megachurches employ savvy applications of sound and sound transmission as instruments of belonging as well as action, and these rely on high-budget investments in church infrastructure, software and personnel. I argue that …

Utilizing Best Practices In The Classroom In Regards To Technology Use, Kathryn Robinson
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The research question addressed in this capstone project is: “In what ways do best practices in technology use in the classroom support teachers and students?” During the COVID-19 pandemic, schools were forced to shift online to protect student health. As schools have returned to in-person learning, the influx of technology has not decreased. Studies show that technology use, whether it be social media, screen time, TV, or videogames can be detrimental to brain development. Because of this, it is crucial that there are guidelines for best practice when using technology in the classroom. Further, healthy habits surrounding technology use outside …

Ai, Celebrities, And Their Fans: The Cyber-Pseudo-Event*, Gabbie Iorio
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Tech companies often use celebrities to facilitate adoption of new technologies, and they’re doing the same with AI. For example, Meta is employing celebrities to attract users to their AI products, not only to adopt the technology, but to provide the company data for testing and optimizing the products. Fan communities, such as Nicki Minaj’s Barbz, have also taken up AI technology as a new medium for fandom expression. This paper will explore the varying degrees of success of these applications of AI technology, while putting them in conversation with scholarship on images, celebrity, and fandom.

Screens And Symptoms: Exploring The Link Between Increased Screen Time And Poor Health Outcomes, Tiffany Burks, Jennifer Sturm
The RAISE Center Journal
Over the past two decades, there has been a substantial rise in ADHD diagnoses among both youth and adults. This phenomenon coincided with several significant developments related to technology, such as increased availability of devices, children receiving personal devices at younger ages, the development of social media outlets, wearable devices, and increased access to internet/Wi-Fi, leading researchers to speculate that ADHD symptomatology is linked to the amount of time a person spends on technology each day. This literature review sought to determine the impact of increased screen time, including ADHD symptomology. It is theorized that as screen time increases, ADHD …

Reforming The Indian Bar: The Limits Of Technological Solutions, Varsha Aithala, Karthik Suresh
Articles
A majority of Indians do not have effective access to legal services, despite the constitutional promise of access to justice. There are two intertwined reasons for this: the unavailability of a sufficient number of good quality lawyers, and the high costs of accessing legal services. The Indian legal profession is highly unequal, with ‘prestige’ being the currency of upward professional mobility. The professional regulator, the Bar Council of India, simply lacks the capacity to regulate quality. As a consequence, clients lack the information to access lawyers, and to understand the outcomes they desire from them, and the fees they have …
Using Classroom Response Systems For Feminist Pedagogy In Large Classes, Sarah Rainey-Smithback, Nicole Kalaf-Hughes
Using Classroom Response Systems For Feminist Pedagogy In Large Classes, Sarah Rainey-Smithback, Nicole Kalaf-Hughes
Feminist Pedagogy
Most practitioners using feminist pedagogy assert small, discussion-based classrooms are best suited for creating power-sharing spaces where students are co-creators of knowledge. While we do not disagree that small classes are well-matched for feminist pedagogy, we challenge the assumption that feminist pedagogy cannot be practiced in large classes. This article explores how Top Hat, a web-enabled classroom response system (CRS), can be used to facilitate feminist pedagogy in a large Introduction to Women’s Studies class. Using data on student perceptions of the CRS, as well as instructor reflections on a technology-centered feminist classroom, this work suggests CRS can be used …
