United States International Communications And Information Policy: A Crisis In The Making?, Dante B. Fascell, Virginia M. Schlundt
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
The arrival of the highly-touted "information age" may precipitate a crisis for the United States if attention is not directed toward the impact of rapidly-changing communications technology on the American economy and society. Most discussions about the implications of the information age have centered on specific problem areas - such as regulation of transborder data flows, allocation of radio frequencies and deregulation of telecommunication services. This Perspective, however, will attempt to provide a cohesive discussion by examining the components of United Stats international communications and information policy, demonstrating their interrelationships, and pinpointing some of the implications of a failure to …

Computers, Cables, And Citizenship: On The Desirability Of Instant Direct Democracy, Richard Dagger
Computers, Cables, And Citizenship: On The Desirability Of Instant Direct Democracy, Richard Dagger
Political Science Faculty Publications
Mulford Sibley is not the sort of scholar who makes a career of elaborating variations on a theme. There are recurring themes in his work, however, and I want to sound two of them, participatory democracy and technology, in this essay. These themes may be joined in a number of ways, but here I shall take up only one - the possibility that advances in communications technology may actually promote democracy by extending and enhancing opportunities for political participation.

Addressing The Reprographic Revolution: Compensating Copyright Owners For Mass Infringement, Rosalind S. Kurz
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Article addresses the unique problems created by the reprographic revolution. Part I discusses recent legislative attempts to relieve the strain placed on existing copyright law by developing reprographic technologies. Using the recent Betamax case as an example, part II criticizes judicial efforts to apply traditional copyright doctrine to issues involving reprographic technologies. Finally, part III proposes a framework for devising, an enforcement scheme to protect copyright holders' rights without denying the public the many benefits offered by reprographic technologies. The Article outlines an approach tailored to meet the special problems associated with each of the three basic reprographic technologies: …

Cognitive Style Mapping As A Predictor Of Student Success In A Radiologic Technology Program, Dorothy Ann Branham
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Utilization of cognitive styles in the educational process as a fundamental, useful, and effective tool has been implemented in many institutions, including Spartanburg Technical College. A research study was completed utilizing the Cognitive Style map in an attempt to develop a cognitive profile of the successful Radiologic Technology student. An attempt was also made to predict the success of Radiologic Technology students by using the profile which was developed. A null hypothesis and an alternate hypothesis was proposed based on the scores of the twenty-eight symbols on the inventory. The scores on each symbol were statistically analyzed according to a …

The Technology Transfer Process: A Vehicle For Continuity And Change, Robert Goldscheider
The Technology Transfer Process: A Vehicle For Continuity And Change, Robert Goldscheider
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
The technology transfer or licensing process is a discipline which, if properly appreciated, can be utilized in a wide variety of circumstances. There is a strong parallel with another discipline, music--more particularly, with the playing of a large and complicated church organ.
A man named Johann Sebastian Bach could sit in a drafty church in Leipzig over 200 years ago and create a phenomenon that had an original, and to the ears of most listeners, very wonderful sound. By utilizing the universally recognized notations of music, the staff, clefs, notes of varying duration, sharps, flats, keys, and indications of loudness …

Efts: Consumer Protection Under The Ucc, Susan E. Jinnett
Efts: Consumer Protection Under The Ucc, Susan E. Jinnett
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
In view of the economic significance of the payments system, the laws governing it must be equitable and comprehensive. The development of the commercial law applicable to EFTS's, however, currently lags behind the growth of these systems. Threats to the integrity of EFTS's stem from lost, stolen, or forged access cards, illegal taps into communication lines, physical impairment of the equipment, or improper programming. The legal rights and liabilities of consumers where the integrity of an EFTS has been breached remains unclear, in part because the status of EFTS's under current law is uncertain. The rights of the parties involved …

I am honored to participate in this seminar that is part of the celebration surrounding the dedication of Colorado's new State Judicial Building. But that feeling of honor is tempered by an awareness of the responsibility and perils of the role I have been asked to play. With the assignment, "The Future of Evidence Law," I have been asked to play the prophet, to be a seer of sorts, and to suggest what rules and principles will govern proof at trials at some date in the future. Exactly what date was not specified in the invitation-a decade, perhaps? A generation? …

Video Tape Recording: What It Is And How It Can Be Used In The Schools, Donald Bryant Frankhauser
Graduate Student Research Papers
I feel the video tape recorder will have a very definite place in the schools. It will be one of our audiovisual aids, just as television, the 16mm. projector and others. It is a tool with unlimited possibilities and a great deal of flexibility. It is a device that can and will be used by teachers at all levels of teaching. It is not an instrument to take the place of the teacher, but, like all audiovisual equipment, is a tool to help the teacher do a more effective job.
Communications Satellites--Progress And The Road Ahead, Bernard G. Segal
Communications Satellites--Progress And The Road Ahead, Bernard G. Segal
Vanderbilt Law Review
The declared policy of the United States is the establishment of a global system of communications satellites which will serve our needs and those of other countries, which will permit the participation of all nations, and which will contribute to world peace and understanding." Such a system, President Kennedy stated, is a vital element in the march of civilization. For lawyers to have a meaningful understanding of the developments in this new and important endeavor requires some understanding of the basic technology of communications satellites, of applicable legislation, and of the international problems involved. This article will attempt to present …
