Hands-On For Whom?, Isabella Stuopis, Avneet Hira Jul 2024

Hands-On For Whom?, Isabella Stuopis, Avneet Hira

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Hands-on technology-enhanced pedagogies have been hailed as a panacea for engaging K–12 students in engineering. We unpack how the entanglement of the sociopolitical with the educational, namely how factors pertaining to resources and individual characteristics, impact engagement with such pedagogies. In particular, we expand upon how school funding, teacher preparation and support, access to out-of- school resources, and family background impact the in-and out-of- school resources students have access to. Further, we explain how characteristics such as a sense of belonging, pedagogical approaches, and assumptions and gatekeeping by adults impact students’ ability to engage with hands-on engineering education. In doing …

Student Engagement In Tennessee Ninth Grade Post-Covid Classrooms, Rebecca Houser Jul 2024

Student Engagement In Tennessee Ninth Grade Post-Covid Classrooms, Rebecca Houser

Ed.D. Dissertations

During the school closures associated with COVID-19, researchers found student engagement decreased, partially due to the concurrent increase in the number of adolescents diagnosed with problematic internet use and internet addiction. At the time of this study, there was limited research related to student engagement after students returned to face-to-face instruction. Moreover, when students returned to in-person school after the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, a paradigm shift to internet-based learning occurred, which meant every student had a computer and spent more time learning online than before the pandemic. Unfortunately, this paradigm shift occurred while students were returning to school with …

Digital Critical Pedagogy: A Collaborative Narrative Literature Review, Ashley Hinck, Lauren Angelone, Ashley Theuring, Karin Admiraal, Jody Googins, Teresa Young, Wendy Maxian

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

At the intersection of an ongoing global pandemic and equity-focused social movements, critical and digital pedagogies became both necessary and important. Digital ways of teaching made education possible when we could not be in person, and provided alternative modes of learning and thinking, but also exacerbated existing inequalities. In this project, we engage in a narrative literature review to examine how digital critical pedagogy (DCP) has been encountered and framed in higher education pedagogy research from 2020-2022. We ask the question: How is DCP being defined, operationalized, and enacted in the emerging research literature? We argue that the analysis of …

Understanding Children's Safety Through Parental Views Of Risks And Strategies, Kayla Ramirez, Letizia Maukar, Michael Wendell, Jerry Alan Fails, Jessi Boyer, Kendall House, John Ziker, Hollie Abele

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Children are introduced to technology when they are young, resulting in the need for parents to learn about child-interfacing technologies to ensure their children remain safe while using digital devices. In our research, we investigated parental perspectives of technology platforms and risks as well as how their strategic approaches to mitigate those risks vary based on how much they “trust” their children when using those devices. Our research was conducted using an online survey, initially analyzing data from a previously distributed survey of 99 families (with children ages 6-12), revising the survey instrument, and redistributing the survey to 100 additional …

Netiquette For Upper Elementary Multilingual Learners: A Curriculum Resource, Denise Price

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

This capstone paper explores the research question: When teaching computer-mediated communication (CMC) skills to upper elementary students, how can teachers include politeness (netiquette) instruction tailored to meet the needs of multilingual learners (MLs)? After reflecting on her own previous difficulties trying to learn the netiquette rules of another language, the author conducted a literature review that revealed an important gap: despite the increasing prevalence of CMC at the elementary level, little research currently exists on how best to teach netiquette skills to this age group. In the accompanying project, the author wove together ideas from traditional linguistic theories about polite …

What Can Artificial Intelligence Offer Humanitarian Mine Action?, Russell Gasser Ph.D. Jun 2024

What Can Artificial Intelligence Offer Humanitarian Mine Action?, Russell Gasser Ph.D.

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Would you walk on land declared safe by an unproven technology, developed by enthusiastic proponents who do not have long experience in the world of mine action? What if the system for locating hazards will be tested in only one or two trials, even though the type of machine learning system they are using is known to sometimes give false but completely plausible results (so-called hallucinations1)? Furthermore, in the proposed machine-learning system there will be no audit trail for analysis if a serious error occurs, and no way of knowing for sure how to prevent its repetition.

There is dangerously …

Robot Lawyers Don’T Have Disciplinary Hearings—Real Lawyers Do: The Ethical Risks And Responses In Using Generative Artificial Intelligence, Hon. John G. Browning

Georgia State University Law Review

In the summer of 2023, the misuse of ChatGPT by two New York attorneys who filed briefs citing fabricated cases made national headlines. This cautionary tale quickly had company, as incidents of other lawyers whose use of artificial intelligence (AI) went horribly wrong filtered in from around the country, including incidents in Texas, Georgia, Colorado, and California. But it was not just errant legal research that was to blame: the cases involved everything from a faulty criminal habeas brief to flawed, mass-generated eviction pleadings by a landlord’s law firm to a high-profile white collar criminal case, in which the convicted …

Exploring Cultural, Health, And Technology Intersections: A Focus On Migrant Experiences, Merna Mina, Sahij Gill

Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections

Despite the plethora of theories and frameworks addressing culture, health, and technology adoption, there remains a notable absence of a unifying theory that comprehensively encompasses all three aspects, particularly concerning newcomers. The Health Belief Model, for example, underscores individual perceptions and attitudes toward health yet fails to consider the intricate interplay between cultural factors and technology adoption among immigrant populations. The Healthy Immigrant Effect, which posits that immigrants often exhibit better health outcomes than native-born individuals, does not mention the role of technology on health outcomes. Acculturation theories, while shedding light on the adaptation process, often fall short of explaining …

Embodied human communication within the Anthropocene. Existing at the intersection of technology, and the body.

The design industry has developed technology that is, paradoxically, isolating. The exposure to a vast audience in the digital sphere has introduced new societal pressures, leading to a disconnection from our immediate surroundings, detached, and donning metaphorical masks. Technocene lives on the fringes of the discipline by blending conceptual thinking with practical application. Through curious, experimental artifacts, it prompts us to shed our masks and embrace vulnerability. Technocene endeavors to reimagine the human experience by acting as a discursive design project. It probes the boundaries …

The Effects Of Technology Based Self-Monitoring On Behaviors Related To Academic Engagement Of A University Student With A Disability, Rachel Mickelson Jun 2024

The Effects Of Technology Based Self-Monitoring On Behaviors Related To Academic Engagement Of A University Student With A Disability, Rachel Mickelson

Masters Theses

College students with disabilities often experience difficulties with meeting the demands of university level courses due to challenges with time management and impulse control (Shmulsky & Gobbo, 2013). Self-monitoring has been proven effective for various populations and behaviors, although limited research has been conducted with college students with disabilities. I-Connect, a technology-based self-monitoring tool, is a digital application that utilizes momentary time sampling where users can select a behavior and interval of time to be prompted to self-monitor that behavior (University of Kansas, 2022). The app also collects real time data and automatically creates graphs to depict the responses collected …

The Metaverse As A Future Threat Landscape: An Interdisciplinary Perspective, Sam T. Hunter, Alexis L. D'Amato, Joel Elson, Austin C. Doctor, Averie E. Linnell

Reports, Projects, and Research

In response to the emergence of new, paradigm-shifting technology that increases capability for the benefit and – as is the focus of this work – harm, we sought to provide contributions across three key areas. First, as a foundation, we provide a definition of the ambiguous and, at times, confusing term ‘metaverse’ and outline its unique characteristics as an emerging ecosystem. Second, we synthesise definitional framing with the violent extremist literature to offer guidance on how the metaverse can (and currently is), manifest in terrorist and extremist activities, such as recruitment, planning, finance, and malevolent creativity. We offer that while …
