Persistence And Change In Social Media, Bernie Hogan, Anabel Quan-Haase
Persistence And Change In Social Media, Bernie Hogan, Anabel Quan-Haase
FIMS Publications
In ―Star Trek‖, Scotty suggests that Transwarp beaming is ―like trying to hit a bullet with a smaller bullet, whilst wearing a blindfold, riding a horse‖ (Abrams, 2009). The study of social media faces similar challenges because new tools are developed at a rapid pace and existing tools are constantly being updated with new features, policies, and applications. Users tend to migrate, in often unpredictable ways, to new tools as well as to adopt multiple tools simultaneously, without showing consistent media preferences and habits (Quan-Haase, 2008). As a result, for scholars it sometimes feels as if the social media landscape …

Using Multimedia To Engage Faculty In Development Opportunities: A Project For Incorporating Reading Comprehension Across Disciplines, Sunay Palsole, Beth Brunk-Chavez, Vinayak Melarkod
Departmental Papers (English)
Current research at all levels of schooling emphasizes the importance of effective reading comprehension as well as the challenges instructors face in teaching it. In 2007, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) awarded The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) a grant to develop 14 online professional development modules. These modules provide reading comprehension strategies to college-level faculty who are teaching entry-level college courses across disciplines. The modules were designed to maximize interaction and provide “take aways” for participants.
Fero Corpum Ferri An Exploration Of The Role Of Human Physiology Against A Backdrop Of Everincreasing Mechanical Supplantation, David Bennett
Fero Corpum Ferri An Exploration Of The Role Of Human Physiology Against A Backdrop Of Everincreasing Mechanical Supplantation, David Bennett
Theses & ETDs
This essay, Fero Corpum Ferri, is meant to accompany a thesis exhibition, comprised of paintings and drawings. The paintings are executed on a medium scale, composed of brightly colored anatomical, mechanical, and invented shapes. They intimate a Pop art or graffiti sensibility that remains coolly detached while approaching varying levels of anatomical and schematic depictions from organs and machinery to cellular abstraction and invented mechanisms. The project continues the investigation of the tensions between humanity and the growing industrial landscape begun by the Dadaists in the early 20th century. The paintings and drawings in this series invoke metaphors for …
Architecture Of Affectation The Transformative Activity Of Networked Technology, Jason Scaglione
Architecture Of Affectation The Transformative Activity Of Networked Technology, Jason Scaglione
Theses & ETDs
This paper attempts to address the emerging realm of social technology in connection with a philosophical investigation of that social world. It proceeds through examples of recent applications of such technologylike the Iranians use of Twitter subsequent to their 2009 electionin an effort to first establish these networked technologies as important objects for study in their own right. Alternate with this discussion is an exploration of contemporary value-theory, and a development of a theory of consciousness that can account for the motivational appearance of human value within the realm of social convention. The author defends this realm as real despite …
Gender, Academic Qualification And Subject Discipline Differentials Of Nigerian Teachers’ Ict Literacy, Alaba Agbatogun
Gender, Academic Qualification And Subject Discipline Differentials Of Nigerian Teachers’ Ict Literacy, Alaba Agbatogun
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The world is seemingly experiencing a third wave of social and technological transformation as the society is becoming more oriented to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT). ICT is one of the various factors that are drastically influencing occupational success especially in the educational sector. Adamu (2004) sees ICT as a set of technological tools and resources used to communicate and create, disseminate, to store and manage information. The information dissemination is easily possible through computer technologies. Markauskaite (2006) opines that the introduction of computer technology into teaching and learning is a giant stride towards improving the quality of education. …

In recent years the development and use of university rankings, comparisons, and/or league tables has become popular and several methodologies are now frequently used to provide a comparative ranking of universities. These rankings are often based on research and publication activity and also not uncommonly focus on indicators that can be measured rather than those that should be measured. Further, the indicators are generally examined for the university as a whole rather than for university divisions, departments or programs. Implicit also is that placement in the rankings is indicative of quality. This paper provides an overview of the methodologies used …

Everything In Its Right Place: Social Cooperation And Artist Compensation, Leah Belsky, Byron Kahr, Max Berkelhammer, Yochai Benkler
Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review
The music industry's crisis response to the Internet has been the primary driver of U.S. copyright policy for over a decade. The core institutional response has been to increase the scope of copyright and the use of litigation, prosecution, and technical control mechanisms for its enforcement. The assumption driving these efforts has been that without heavily-enforced copyright, artists will not be able to make a living from their art. Throughout this period artists have been experimenting with approaches that do not rely on technological or legal enforcement, but on constructing web-based business models that engage fans and rely on voluntary …
Ill Telecommunications: How Internet Infrastructure Providers Lose First Amendment Protection, Nicholas Bramble
Ill Telecommunications: How Internet Infrastructure Providers Lose First Amendment Protection, Nicholas Bramble
Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently proposed an Internet nondiscrimination rule: "Subject to reasonable network management, a provider of broadband Internet access service must treat lawful content, applications, and services in a nondiscriminatory manner." Among other requests, the FCC sought comment on whether the proposed nondiscrimination rule would "promote free speech, civic participation, and democratic engagement," and whether it would "impose any burdens on access providers' speech that would be cognizable for purposes of the First Amendment." The purpose of this Article is to suggest that a wide range of responses to these First Amendment questions, offered by telecommunications providers …

Patenting By Entrepreneurs: An Empirical Study, Ted Sichelman, Stuart J.H. Graham
Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review
[T]he Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation--an organization that studies and promotes entrepreneurship in the United States--funded an effort at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, to undertake the first comprehensive survey of the relationship between patenting and entrepreneurship in the United States. The authors, along with other investigators, administered the survey in 2008 to approximately 15,000 startup and early-stage companies in the biotechnology, medical device, information technology (IT) hardware, and software and Internet sectors. A portion of the survey examined why entrepreneurs, startups, and early-stage companies do (and do not) seek patents. This Article reports and analyzes results from …
Media-Rich Input Application Liability, David R. Krohn, Pekarek
Media-Rich Input Application Liability, David R. Krohn, Pekarek
Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review
Until recently, media-rich online interactions were mostly unidirectional: multimedia content was delivered by the service provider to the user. Input from the user came almost exclusively in the form of text. Even when searching the Internet for images or audio, a user typically entered text into a search engine. In addition, search engines indexed multimedia content by analyzing not the content itself but the text surrounding it. This is rapidly changing. With the rise of multimedia-capable smartphones and wireless broadband, applications that allow users to search using non-textual inputs are quickly becoming popular. These applications go much further than simply …
Not So Technical: An Analysis Of Federal Circuit Patent Decisions Appealed From The Itc, Holly Lance
Not So Technical: An Analysis Of Federal Circuit Patent Decisions Appealed From The Itc, Holly Lance
Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review
A widespread perception among the patent law community is that the patent system would be more effective if judges with technical backgrounds and patent law experience decided patent disputes. Proponents believe that if judges all had similar baseline knowledge of technological analysis, there would be more consistency in decision-making, leading to more predictability for parties. Some district courts have unofficially become semi-specialized in patent law disputes, and Congress is debating whether to institute a more formalized Patent Pilot Program in which district court judges specialize in patent law cases. This Note joins the debate and examines patent law cases at …

The Science, The Technology, The Law, Ken Fowle
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
Forensic science must satisfy two needs; that of the scientific community and that of the legal profession. It is hoped that the legal and scientific outcomes should be based on one and the same thing. Science, Technology and Law depend upon the establishment of a reliable basis of fact. But in the Court it is the law that finally decides what is fact, what is opinion and what the truth should be. This paper looks at the role of the Forensic Practitioner’s requirement for understanding the science, the technology and the law. It endeavours to explain the reasons, using cases, …

A Continuum Of Paraeducator Support For Utilization In Adapted Physical Education, Justin A. Haegele, Francis M. Kozub
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
This article describes three different ways of using paraeducators during adapted physical education. (1.) Having paraeducators read a portion of the lesson plan that describes the desired support towards lesson objectives. Paraeducators then assist all students when needed. (2.) Assigning specific modifications for paraeducators through the IEP process. These modifications maybe designed for a single child and listed in the lesson plan. The paraeducator then provides specific support for a particular child. (3.) Using video modeling to create media clips for paraeducators to view prior to assisting children during the lesson. The media clips include modeling of key lesson concepts …

Accessing Children's Perspectives Through Participatory Photo Interviews, Jane Jorgenson, Tracy Sullivan
Communication Faculty Publications
In this article we seek to contribute to the emerging conversation on child-centered research methods by reflecting on the use of participatory photo interviewing to understand children's experiences with household technology. Participatory photo interviews attempt to engage children as active research participants by giving them cameras and inviting them to take pictures dealing with various aspects of their lives. The photos are later used in the interview process to jointly explore the subjective meaning of the images. We focus here on how children oriented to the research task, and in particular, on the ethnographic insights obtained by attending to the …
Evaluating E-Learning, D D Williams, Charles R. Graham
Evaluating E-Learning, D D Williams, Charles R. Graham
Faculty Publications
Technological innovations have spurred exponential use of electronic resources for learners of all ages over the last decade. These global developments also require continual advancement of electronic e-learning evaluation. Evaluation is the process of clarifying what should be and comparing that to what is, to facilitate evaluative decisions about success and ways to achieve it. This article outlines a process for doing evaluations of e-learning and identifies common critical-evaluation elements. An extended case vignette of an e-learning evaluation and references to others and related literature illustrate the use of these critical elements and associated emerging results.

Effects Of A Computerized Professional Development Program On Teacher And Student Outcomes, Joseph B. Fisher, Jean B. Schumaker, John Culbertson, Donald D. Deshler
Peer Reviewed Articles
Effects of a computerized professional development (PD) program for a concept teaching routine were investigated in two studies. For each, teachers were randomly assigned to either a virtual workshop group that used a multimedia software program for PD or an actual workshop group that participated in a live PD session. In Study 1, the teachers’ knowledge about the routine and planning for the routine significantly improved after completing either workshop; no significant differences were found between the groups. Both teacher groups were satisfied with the PD. In Study 2, the teachers’ performance of the routine in their classrooms improved, as …
Using Cell Phone Technology For Self-Monitoring Procedures In Inclusive Settings, Pena Bedesem
Using Cell Phone Technology For Self-Monitoring Procedures In Inclusive Settings, Pena Bedesem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects and social validity of an innovative method for middle school students with high incidence disabilities to self-monitor their behavior in inclusive settings. Traditional self-monitoring procedures were updated by incorporating cell phone technology. The updated self-monitoring procedure, called CellF-Monitoring, used a cell phone to replace traditional cueing and recording procedures. The study took place in an inclusive middle school classroom in central Florida with two students with high incidence disabilities. A multiple-baseline-across-participants single subject design was employed. Results indicate that the CellF-Monitoring procedure is an effective and socially valid intervention. Although …
Interactive Text-Image Conceptual Models For Literary Interpretation And Composition In The Digital Age, Beth Nixon Weaver
Interactive Text-Image Conceptual Models For Literary Interpretation And Composition In The Digital Age, Beth Nixon Weaver
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on text-image conceptual models for literary interpretation and composition in the digital age. The models investigate an interactive blend of textually-based linear-sequential approaches and visually-based spatial-simultaneous approaches. The models employ Gestalt-inspired figure-ground segregation models, along with other theoretical models, that demonstrate the dynamic capabilities of images as conceptual tools as well as alternate forms of text. The models encourage an interpretative style with active participants in openended, multi-sensory meaning-making processes. The models use the flexible tools of modern technology as approaches to meaning-making with art strategies used for research strategies as well as a means to appreciate …

Defending Privacy: The Development And Deployment Of A Darknet, Conor Mcmanamon, Fredrick Mtenzi
Conference papers
New measures imposed by governments, Internet service providers and other third parties which threaten the state of privacy are also opening new avenues to protecting it. The unwarranted scrutiny of legitimate services such as file hosters and the BitTorrent protocol, once relatively unknown to the casual Internet user, is becoming more obvious. The darknet is a rising contender against these new measures and will preserve the default right to privacy of Internet users. A darknet is defined in the context of file sharing as a network which operates on top of another network such as the Internet for the purpose …
The Transnational Gaze: Viewing Mexican Identity In Contemporary Corridos And Narcocorridos, Charlene Ladawn Montano
The Transnational Gaze: Viewing Mexican Identity In Contemporary Corridos And Narcocorridos, Charlene Ladawn Montano
Honors Papers
Through the lenses of technology and gender I offer a new perspective on the employment and utilization of corrido tropes throughout history and in modern culture. Technology has expanded the transnational gaze, not only increasing the sheer number of listeners but also incorporating a visual element to the (narco)corridos. The enlarged and geographically diversified community of listeners coupled with visual elements only strengthens the tropes evident since the earliest corridos.
Gender is markedly absent in the literature that discusses corridos, but its presence in the tradition has a strong influence on the Mexican mask. The ways in which gender is …

A Tale Of Two Worlds: A Second Life For Higher Education?, Daniel Demaiolo, Donna Walsh
AMTP Proceedings 2010
This exploratory research investigates the virtual world industry, explanations for its growth and emerging trends for entrepreneurial ventures and marketing communications. It then explores the effectiveness of operating and promoting higher education in Second Life. Results illustrate consumers 17-24 years old still rely on traditional media for information related to higher education. Developing a business model and marketing mix in Second Life, that often features uncensored content, may not be an appropriate method of connecting with the target demographic. Benefits of utilizing virtual worlds are considered; further research is recommended; suggestions are offered to increase Second Life’s viability in higher …
