The Prevalence Of Technology, Greg Townsend
The Prevalence Of Technology, Greg Townsend
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The current study at hand administered a survey to determine the prevalence of technology and Internet usage in undergraduate college students. The results of a survey administered to 66 participants revealed that just about two-thirds of the students may have or had an excessive problem, which could be related to several aspects such as age, gender, class status, country of origin, and so on. The results did allow the research to support the hypothesis that stated if someone in college were given a technology and Internet addiction survey, then he/she would report that he/she is in fact addicted to the …

Is There A Link Between Technical Advances And The Number Of Obese People In The United States?, Amanda Pneuman
Honors College Theses
Obesity is defined medically as having a BMI of over 30kg/m2. BMI is body mass index which is calculated by (weight in kg)/height in meters) 2. Obesity is an ongoing problem throughout the United States with over half the states having 20% to 24% of their population being classified as obese. In 2003 more than 300,000 people in this nation died from an illness that was related to being overweight or obese. Obesity affects many aspects of life including social skills, job opportunities, financial issues, and most importantly, health. What is causing these increasing statistics for obese Americans? There are …

Connection, Technology, Positionality: An Inside Look At Women Faculty's Positionality Toward "Connection" And "Technology", Wei Zhai
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Women faculty members have been reported rating their level of knowledge and experience in using technologies lower than male faculty members. A closer examination revealed that women faculty members were likely to use technologies that fit into their pedagogy, met students' learning styles and needs, and facilitated their interactions with colleagues and students. So women faculty's choices of particular technologies can be assumed to reflect their particular instructional beliefs and perspectives, represented as a connected approach to learning and teaching. Gender alone is inadequate to explain women faculty's use of technology.
The purpose of this study was to explore women …
A Comparative Study Of Self-Disclosure In Face-To-Face And Email Communication Between Americans And Chinese, Carolyn Durand
A Comparative Study Of Self-Disclosure In Face-To-Face And Email Communication Between Americans And Chinese, Carolyn Durand
Senior Honors Projects
Self-disclosure occurs when one person communicates personal information about his or her self to another. This information can include facts, opinions, or feelings, and can vary in both breadth and depth. The amount of self-disclosure a person offers depends on several factors. The gender and personality of the person, the relationship they have with the listener, or target, the topic they are discussing, and the medium through which they are communicating all influence how much they are willing to reveal about themselves.
Another aspect that affects self-disclosure is culture. Culture refers to a set of beliefs, values, and traditions shared …
Perception And Acquisition Of Natural Authentic English Speech For Chinese Learners Using Dit's Speech Technologies, Yi Wang
Doctoral
Given that Chinese language learners are greatly influenced by their mother-tongue, which is a tone language rather than an intonation language, learning and coping with authentic English speech seems more difficult than for learners of other languages. The focus of the current research is, on the basis of analysis of the nature of spoken English and spoken Chinese, to help Chinese learners derive benefit from ICT technologies developed by the Technological University Dublin (DIT). The thesis concentrates on investigating the application of speech technologies in bridging the gap between students’ internalised, idealised formulations and natural, authentic English speech. Part of …
From Airport To Spaceport: Designing For An Aerospace Revolution, Paula Selvidge
From Airport To Spaceport: Designing For An Aerospace Revolution, Paula Selvidge
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
"Airports will shape business location and urban development in the 21st century as much as highways did in the 20th century, railroads in the 19th and seaports in the 18th" - John D. Kasarda, Ph.D. Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina http://www.aerotropolis.com/author.html
I say, spaceports will shape the urban development of the 21st century, more than airports, bringing about an aerospace revolution. Just as new technologies triggered the global revolutions of the past, so the invention of reusable spacecraft will revolutionize transportation.
The invention of such spacecraft suggests the need for a different kind of transportation hub: a spaceport. …
Literacy, Technology And Discernment: Investigating The Role Of Information Technology In Literacy Education, Alisa Siebenga-Weening
Literacy, Technology And Discernment: Investigating The Role Of Information Technology In Literacy Education, Alisa Siebenga-Weening
Master of Education Program Theses
Regardless of geography, segments of the population struggle to read and write. This struggle is so pronounced that literacy has become an issue for many governments, and policies have been set in place to help ensure a literate society. Educators, in their struggle to respond to the problem, have looked to a variety of methods to help children become literate. One prominent means is the use of information technology and computer-assisted instruction. Because of its significant role, it is necessary for the Christian educator to examine the impact of computer technology, to investigate the role and extent of use of …
Computer Technology Integration Into The Public School Classroom – A Qualitative Update, Ramiro Zuniga
Computer Technology Integration Into The Public School Classroom – A Qualitative Update, Ramiro Zuniga
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The number of computers found in public schools has greatly increased over the last forty years. As recognized by the National Center for Education Statistics (2000), the dramatic increase has led to a need for understanding how these computers are being used in the classroom and how teachers feel about the current state of integration. Some observers of this phenomenon have suggested that the desire to acquire computer technology for use in the public school classroom has been so strong that many of the proponents of computer technology integration into the public school classroom have spent little time in explaining …

Relative Comparisons Of User Hand Cleanliness Between New Technology (No Touch) Public Restrooms And Older Technology Public Restrooms, William M. Sherrill
JCCC Honors Journal
It is the purpose of this experiment to see if the hands of individuals exiting newer technology public restrooms are cleaner than the hands of people exiting older technology public restrooms. Our hypothesis is newer technology public restrooms (NTPR) result in a greater overall degree of hand cleanliness when compared to the older technology public restrooms (OTPR).
This paper fulfilled W. M. Sherrill's Honor Contract for Honors Science. His faculty supervisor was Professor HM Seitz of Johnson County Community College.
Carbon Down Under - Lessons From Australia: Two Recommendations For Clarifying Subsurface Property Rights To Facilitate Onshore Geologic Carbon Sequestration In The United States, Tracy J. Logan
San Diego International Law Journal
This Comment’s analysis requires a few necessary assumptions. First, the feasibility of large-scale deployment of geologic CCS technology for the purposes of permanently storing CO2 is assumed. Second, the establishment of a regulatory framework with incentives to mitigate or offset GHGs is assumed. Third, the carbon-capture technology retrofitting of point-source emitters is assumed. And finally, the existence of infrastructure to transport supercritical CO2 to a storage site is assumed. This Comment contains five parts: Part I provides an introduction and overview to contextualize the need for CCS; Part II details the technology of GS; Part III is an overview of …

Tune In: Berklee College Of Music, Center For Music Technology, Boston, Massachusetts, Nicholas Proto
Architecture Theses and Projects
The design proposal is a center for music technology for the Berklee College of Music. The technology of music will blend with the technology of design to create a new, different place. The concept is to develop generative proposals that break the norms of “everyday life” through the creation of digital tools and processes. The ability to “disrupt someone’s lifestyle” is not done out of negative intentions, but to inspire one to break out and experience something new and exciting. Digital technologies enhance the process to provide key information in order to design and construct.

Technologies That Assist In Closing The Achievement Gap: A Comparison African American And Caucasian Students’ Learning And Community In The Online Classroom, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw, Randall Dunn, Holder David
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Higher Education administrators and educators seek to understand how to design and to facilitate online courses to ensure quality, culturally responsive online education for minority students, specifically African American students, and to close the academic achievement gap that exists today. This study examines online students’ using both synchronous and asynchronous technologies to determine whether students’ social presence, cognitive presence, teacher presence, and perceived learning differ based upon ethnicity. A one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted. Results yielded no significant difference in dependent variables based on ethnicity.
Technological Fair Use, Edward Lee
Technological Fair Use, Edward Lee
All Faculty Scholarship
The Article proposes a framework tailoring fair use specifically for technology cases. At the inception of the twenty-first century, information technologies have become increasingly central to the U.S. economy. Not surprisingly, complex copyright cases involving speech technologies, such as DVRs, mp3 devices, Google Book Search, and YouTube, have increased as well. Yet existing copyright law, developed long before digital technologies, is ill-prepared to handle the complexities these technology cases pose. The key question often turns, not on prima facie infringement, but on the defense of fair use, which courts have too often relegated to extremely fact-specific decisions. The downside to …
Podcasting Possibilities For Art Education, Melanie L. Buffington
Podcasting Possibilities For Art Education, Melanie L. Buffington
Art Education Publications
Technological developments influence the way artists create works of art. Newer technologies associated with the Web, called Web 2.0, are changing and affecting the work of contemporary artists. One form of Web 2.0 is the development of podcasts, which are compressed files that can be shared through the Internet. Podcasts are mainstream and many art museums use them as a means to provide audio or video for visitors, virtual or real. Over the last few semesters, I worked with groups of undergraduate and graduate art education students to develop podcasts based on their interpretations of works of art. Through these …

(R)Evolution In The Information Industry: What The Information Industry Can Learn From The Music Industry, Amy M. Elliott
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
A failure to adapt to and adopt new and changing technology caused the music industry to crash, a fate that the information industry currently faces. This paper is an overview of the music industry's crash, as a result of emerging digital technology, and the lessons that the information industry can learn from the music industry's mistakes in order to avoid its own crash now that technology allows for quicker, easier, and cheaper publication. In the 1980s and 1990s record companies refused to effectively adapt to and adopt the new digital technologies of CDs, MP3s, and digital recording. This resulted in …

Hybrid Graduate Education: Assessing Student Comfort With Technology Interventions, Martin Sivula
Technology
This pilot study examines a cohort of fourteen, doctoral, graduate students over the last year and one-half of their hybrid (both face-to-face and on-line) program. This study’s purpose was to determine their level of comfort with the new technologies (Web 2.0 software) both before and after intended learning interventions. Several theoretical models concerning technology users’ preferences, attitudes, tasks, Task-Technology Fit (TTF), and student engagement provided frameworks for a conceptual model for the eventual course design, assignments, and learning interventions (Hersey & Blanchard, 1977; Davis, 1986; Davis et al., 1989; Goodhue & Thompson, 1995; Zigurs & Buckland, 1998; Kearsley & Shneiderman, …

Technology Use In A First-Year Composition Program, Estee Natee Beck
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study examines how instructors view and work with technology in a firstyear composition program at a four-year, public university in central Appalachia. Six interview questions were developed for this study as a means to explore the instructor’s definition of technology, level of use (functional, critical, and or rhetorical), difficulties using technology, pedagogy, and socioeconomics of the student population. Using qualitative methods to find patterns in the data, correlations were present among participant responses with functional uses, access, and socioeconomics. Educators primarily use technology functionally for the purpose of creating linear-based essays; have broad access to technology, but do not …
Teaching With Technology : College Preparation With Avid, Megan Kauffman
Teaching With Technology : College Preparation With Avid, Megan Kauffman
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Students are growing up in the age of technology. Students are so submerged in technology that they have lost interest in content learning. Technology of any sort can be easily integrated into the classroom. For my capstone project, I worked with a teacher who teaches a 7th and 8th grade AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) class. AVID prepares students for college and I knew that technology had a big part in college preparation. I created a semester long supplemental curriculum that uses computers for all of the lessons. The lessons start with the basics such as setting up an appropriate …

Current research at all levels of schooling emphasizes the importance of effective reading comprehension as well as the challenges instructors face in teaching it. In 2007, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) awarded The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) a grant to develop 14 online professional development modules. These modules provide reading comprehension strategies to college-level faculty who are teaching entry-level college courses across disciplines. The modules were designed to maximize interaction and provide “take aways” for participants.
Long Distance Managerial Intervention In Overseas Conflicts: Helping Missionaries Reframe Conflict Along Multiple Dimensions, David R. Dunaetz
Long Distance Managerial Intervention In Overseas Conflicts: Helping Missionaries Reframe Conflict Along Multiple Dimensions, David R. Dunaetz
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Effective ways of conflict management must be found for missionaries when no trusted mediator in the region is available. Home office management or leaders in other regions can intervene through context rich media, such as the telephone and video conferencing, to provide help. Intervention through context poor media, such as email, is much less likely to succeed. Effective managerial intervention involving interaction with each party can lead to reframing the conflict into an opportunity to cooperate and find mutually beneficial solutions. The manager can present information, ask questions, and help the parties see that resolution is possible by addressing key …
