Since the publication of the Standards for Technological Literacy in 2000 (ITEA), there have been a number of new programs developed that are designed to teach pre-engineering. Project Lead the Way is one such program. Project Lead the Way boasts serving over 1250 schools in 44 states and teaching over 160,000 students (McVearry, 2003). Efforts are also being made to infuse engineering design into technology education programs. One example of this is the work of the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE) partnering with high school technology educators in summer inservice workshops to help teachers develop activities and …
Civic Lessons: Public Schools And The Civic Development Of Undocumented Students And Parents, John Rogers, Marisa Saunders, Veronica Terriquez, Veronica Valez
Civic Lessons: Public Schools And The Civic Development Of Undocumented Students And Parents, John Rogers, Marisa Saunders, Veronica Terriquez, Veronica Valez
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
In the Court reasoned that by providing undocumented students with core academic instruction, public schools could contribute to their participation in democratic institutions and thus enhance civic life. This article assesses this and a set of related claims. Drawing on three data sets, the authors consider how access to public schools shapes the civic development and civic engagement of undocumented students and their parents. They first introduce data from a longitudinal study tracking the civic development of youth through high school and into adulthood. They then share survey data that indicates the relatively high levels of school participation among undocumented …

Breaking The "Sound" Barrier To Fluent Reading: An Evaluation Of A Middle School Reading Intervention, Kimberly Simmerman
Breaking The "Sound" Barrier To Fluent Reading: An Evaluation Of A Middle School Reading Intervention, Kimberly Simmerman
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The failure to read efficiently accounts for nearly 80% of the children who meet the criteria for a specific learning disability in America. Moreover, many of those children do not receive instruction that is sufficient to improve their reading achievement to within the average range. The current study examines the Breaking the “Sound” Barrier to Fluent Reading program by comparing pretest and posttest scores on individually administered and group statewide tests of reading achievement. The impact of IQ on progress is evaluated and discussed. Students’levels of reading proficiency preintervention and postintervention, as determined by the criteria set forth by the …

In recent years, Dallas nonprofits have received low rankings especially when compared to those located in other metro areas such as Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago and Houston. In a city that is growing larger with each passing day it is important that steps be taken to help this struggling sector become more effective in the community and do so in a way that will permit them to thrive. We are requesting support for our research of Dallas’ nonprofit sector, and of the problems that these organizations are faced with. In the process, we will be studying what exactly makes a …

Big iDeas 2008 Proposals
Childhood obesity stands at the forefront of problems in the city of Dallas… To combat this problem, we propose a pilot program that will be readily reproducible throughout the city. We will build upon longstanding ties and a tradition of trust that has been cultivated between SMU’s Center for Inter-Community Experience (ICE) and the low-income neighborhoods of East Dallas.

Establishing Microenterprise In The Vickery Meadow Community Of Dallas, Laura Arellano-Weddleton, Andrea Fernandez, Jobin Kalathil
Big iDeas 2008 Proposals
The neighborhood of Vickery Meadow, situated in Dallas slightly north of White Rock Lake, is a unique community that boasts high ethnic diversity. Vickery would be an ideal location to pilot a microenterprise program that would provide empowerment, mentorship, and the opportunity for economic growth for these families. The pilot program would be a selfsustaining tradition of microenterprise in Vickery Meadow that would include regular market events in a permanent space within the neighborhood. Such a program would provide a center of community and support for the residents of the neighborhood, as well as an inviting place for members of …

The city of Dallas, like many other American cities, is currently facing an air quality crisis. This study will utilize the DART system as a case example in the process of determining how a public transit system can be successfully applied in cities subject to urban sprawl situations similar to Dallas’. Possible alternatives, adjustments and improvements to the DART system will be considered and analyzed. Social implications and logistical adjustments will be central to the study. The final goal is to find changes that will increase the percentage of commuters who choose to use public transportation. Hopefully, the successful result …

Big iDeas 2008 Proposals
This Big iDeas project attempts to single-out and correct he gap between the expectations of employers and the reality of public education curriculum — specifically, the missing component of verbal communication skills development. We will tackle the issue first-hand and develop oral communication skills in current Dallas ISD high school students through an after-school Mock Trial program at two locations: Woodrow Wilson High School and Hillcrest High School. Every moment of this project will be videoed so that a multimedia presentation or documentary can be created.

Big iDeas 2008 Proposals
Among the many sections of Dallas, SMU's campus is definitely one of the safest. Many contributing reasons for this include the active police force and campus security. Besides the manpower, the campus has a safe feel due to the many other precautions that the school has taken. An example of these precautions is the emergency text messaging and email system, which allows for the quick spread of vital information. In the wake of the tragic Virginia Tech shooting, SMU took a strong step toward protecting its students and faculty with this system. The effect of this system could be felt …

Affirmative Action & Negative Action: How Jian Li's Case Can Benefit Asian Americans, Adrian Liu
Affirmative Action & Negative Action: How Jian Li's Case Can Benefit Asian Americans, Adrian Liu
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
In October 2006, Asian American student Jian D filed a civil rights complaint against Princeton University claiming that Princeton's affirmative action policies were discriminatory. Li argues that affirmative action gives preferences to non-Asian minorities at the expense of Asian students. Li's case aligns the interests of Asian Americans with Whites who challenge affirmative action and suggests that such policies are inherently discriminatory because they exclude students based on race and sacrifice merit. This Article argues that Li's exclusion is not due to affirmative action but is likely due to "negative action," the unfavorable treatment of Asian Americans relative to Whites. …
Humanism, Education And Spirituality: Approaching Psychosis With Levinas, Glenn J. Morrison
Humanism, Education And Spirituality: Approaching Psychosis With Levinas, Glenn J. Morrison
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
The article investigates the recent turn towards Emmanuel Levinas’ writings in the philosophy of Education. Engaging this turn, the article sets out to develop an ethical, personal and contemplative approach towards understanding and responding to psychosis. By imagining a Levinasian horizon for understanding the experience of psychosis in the Teaching-Learning environment, Levinas’ thought gives hope to take on the work of justice and offer a gift of friendship especially when faced with students experiencing psychosis. The approach towards people suffering the moods and difficulties of psychosis, the article argues, parallels the very spiritual practice of contemplation.
