The International Polar Year - Research and Educational Opportunities in Antarctica for Minorities (IPY-ROAM) program was designed to increase minority participation in polar science by immersing participants in an academic program that included a trip to Antarctica. The IPY-ROAM program was focused on increasing the public understanding of the Polar Regions and stimulating a new interest in polar science. This effort was coordinated by faculty from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and was implemented to positively contribute to the intense, internationally coordinated IPY scientific campaign. Through a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), a team of …

The authors share some of the research about Generation 1.5 students as well as other students whose academic writing skills may need development. We relate some data from MSU, from state of Minnesota reports, and from federal studies and discuss some of the reading and writing issues for these students. We describe the possible roles of Adult Basic Education (ABE), community colleges, and MSU in developmental writing coursework and explore assessment tools utilized. We describe some models of writing development around the state and the nation, and finally describe some consequences of doing nothing, piloting project(s), and implementing a program …

Engineering Design Activity: Understanding How Different Design Activities Influence Students' Motivation In Grades 9-12, Oenardi Lawanto, Gary Stewardson
Reports of Center Studies
The objective of this study was to evaluate grade 9-12 students’ motivation while engaged in two different engineering design projects: marble-sorter and bridge designs. The motivation components measured in this study were focused on students’ intrinsic (IGO) and extrinsic (EGO) goal orientations, task value (TV), self-efficacy for learning and performance (SELP), and control belief (CB). After finishing each project, students were asked to complete an Engineering Design Questionnaire (EDQ) survey instrument. The instrument consisted of 26 items modified from motivational scales of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ).Besides the motivational scales, five demographic and two open-ended questions exploring students’ …

Ruminative Thought Style And Depressed Mood., Jay K Brinker, David J A Dozois
Psychology Publications
Recent research has suggested that the measure most commonly used to assess rumination, the Response Style Questionnaire (RSQ; L. D. Butler & S. Nolen-Hoeksema, 1994), may be heavily biased by depressive symptoms, thereby restricting the scope of research exploring this construct. This article offers a broader conceptualization of rumination, which includes positive, negative, and neutral thoughts as well as past and future-oriented thoughts. The first two studies describe the development and evaluation of the Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire (RTS), a psychometrically sound measure of the general tendency to ruminate. Further, the scale is comprised of a single factor and shows …

Curriculum-Based Measures Of Reading And Student Performance On State-Wide Achievement Tests, Brian L. Dorshimer
Curriculum-Based Measures Of Reading And Student Performance On State-Wide Achievement Tests, Brian L. Dorshimer
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
With increasing pressure and accountability for schools to produce higher scores on statewide achievement tests, the use ofCurriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) methods for monitoring student progress, identifYing at-risk students for failing state tests, and providing appropriate interventions to increase student performance could prove to be very beneficial (McGlinchey & Hixson, 2004). Research has indicated that CBM can be an effective tool in predicting success on state-wide reading achievement tests (Shapiro, Keller, Lutz, Santoro, & Hintze, 2006; Wood, 2006; Hintze & Silberglitt, 2005; McGlinchey & Hixson, 2004; Barger, 2003; Shaw & Shaw, 2002; Stage & Jacobsen, 2001). Big iDeas 2009 Proposals
Young Dreamer Enterprises addresses the issues of low-income youth financial development, educational performance and enterprise sustainability in Dallas, by showing young people how to create rather than merely consume. The goal of this project is to provide young low-income students with an artistic outlet where they can focus on creative initiatives and learn about aspects of entrepreneurship. In this way, the young people are able to learn about financial growth, as well as exercise their skills in a variety of hands-on activities.

Big iDeas 2009 Proposals
The main focus of our big iDea is to address one of the causes global warming in the Dallas area. As stated in the Dallas Sustainable Skyline project, one of the seven ways to help clear the skies in Dallas and improve the quality of life is to replace small diesel-powered engines with more efficient, sustainable technologies.

Big iDeas 2009 Proposals
On June 27, 2006, the Surgeon General issued a report indicating that there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke. SMU’s current Smoking Policy was last revised May 4, 1998. Because of new medical, legal, and social indicators, our team believes that a review of that Smoking Policy is needed.
