Ethnic Identity And Sense Of School Belongingness: Behaviors And Beliefs Of Immigrant Hispanic Students And Parents, Francisco B. Ortiz

Master's Theses

For many decades, the number of minority students, particularly Hispanics, dropping out from school has been noticeable to say the least (Rumberger, 1995). These students have in the past and continue in the present to struggle with the educational system, and it is certain, but not clear, that various factors contribute to Hispanics’ poor academic performance and not being able to graduate from High School (Rumbaut & Cornelius, 1995). Some of these factors are organized in three groups: School-Related; Parental-Related; and Student-Related. Thus, this study is an attempt to understand how immigrant students and parents are currently responding to the …

Understanding Arts-Based Methods In Managerial Development, Steven S. Taylor, Donna Ladkin

Faculty Articles

With the rising use of arts-based methods in organizational development and change, scholars have started to inquire into how and why these methods work. We identify four processes that are particular to the way in which arts-based methods contribute to the development of individual organization managers and leaders: through the transference of artistic skills, through projective techniques, through the evocation of "essence," and through creating artifacts such as masks, collages, or sculpture, a process we call "making." We illustrate these processes in detail with two case examples and then discuss the implications for designing the use of arts-based methods for …

From Philly To Fayetteville: Reflections On Teaching Criminal Law In The First Year, Brian Gallini Jan 2009

From Philly To Fayetteville: Reflections On Teaching Criminal Law In The First Year, Brian Gallini

School of Law Faculty Publications and Presentations

How exactly should we teach the first-year criminal law course? How many credits should the course receive? What should go in the syllabus? How much of what is in the syllabus must be covered? In this essay, I humbly offer some thoughts – from the “newbie’s” standpoint – for your consideration in response to each of these questions. I conclude with some limited comments (reminders?) directed gently to my senior colleagues about teaching this generation of first-year law students.

Addressing Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity Harassment In Schools Through Community Building, Katherine Gray Asplund Jan 2009

Addressing Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity Harassment In Schools Through Community Building, Katherine Gray Asplund

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Compounding this issue is the fact that much of this harassment is ignored or minimized by fellow students, teachers, and administrators. The author chose to address this issue at the local level, working with members of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill to help them increase their visibility and accessibility, thereby developing a safer and more supportive campus environment for all students, particularly those who are …
