This paper describes the outcome based education (OBE) implementation and continuous quality improvement (CQI) process plan in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Malaya. The implementation of CQI plan is a part of the Outcome - based Education (OBE) approach required by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) for recognition of Biomedical Engineering program and as a graduate student for Board of Engineer Malaysia (BEM) and Institute of Engineer Malaysia (IEM) membership registration. This approach was first introduced to Biomedical Engineering Department since 2005. The measurement on Programme Outcomes (POs) which will be evaluated upon graduation is done based on …

In order to abate the anxiety and frustration surrounding visits to healthcare facilities, we propose the creation of a set of pictorial pharmacy flashcards, which will be given to Burmese patients in tandem with a diagnosis. The flashcards will indicate not only which medicine to purchase from the pharmacy, but also directions for use, absent words.

Dream Big reaches out to communities in need, listens and responds with the sport that they value most. It is in the midst of the fun and excitement of our sports camps that kids begin to understand the importance of college, friendship and discipline. All it takes is one moment to change a child’s life and we hope to be a part of that.

Big iDeas 2011 Proposals
Health literacy is a major issue in American health. Health literacy pertains to how patients obtain, understand, and use health information, as well as how medical professionals communicate medical information to their patients and the public. The economic costs of health literacy are conservatively estimated at over $70 billion annually in the United States. With recent alterations to the JCAHO standards, as well as pressure from new medical reimbursement legislation, the economics of health communication are only increasing in importance. More importantly though, is the human impact health literacy issues have on Americans. One in seven Americans struggle t read …

Immigration is at the heart of a much heated debate as current legislation stands. There is no simple black and white solution, and it is not the intent of the Boxed In Team to endorse one view over another. The goal is to bring attention to and promote discussion about a growing concern within the education system. Through the immigration debate the position of undocumented college students has been uncovered. Texas houses the second largest population of undocumented students in the United States, second only to California.

Big iDeas 2011 Proposals
Due to social and political unrest in Mexico, entrepreneurs and corporations are relocating to cities throughout Texas. This gives the city of Dallas a great opportunity to gain valuable businesses and increase economic strength. Our idea is to create a multi-purpose bilingual integration center for Mexican entrepreneurs and corporations relocating to the state of Texas. Our future goal is to establish this center where such individuals can go to be advised in where live, where to send their children to school, where to open new stores/ offices as well as social networking opportunities and the like. However, we understand that …

Communities have always relied on the contributions of their small businesspersons in order to prosper; so when small enterprise suffers, we all suffer. Our team proposes to empower small enterprises in DFW, particularly in Vickery Meadow, through microloans ranging anywhere from $250 to $750. Using our connections in the community, we will find qualified loan recipients and tailor our clientele’s loans and repayment methods to individual needs. Through microloans, private enterprisers will have the power to better both themselves and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

How do you donate to a person in need and know that your donation is helping them and not fueling destructive behavior? The problem that we are addressing the current lack of a proper method of donating to the homeless such that the person donating can feel certain that their money is going to the right cause. The service that we will be providing is a transparent donation system, much like a gift card, but with restrictions that will allow it to be redeemable only at shelters and organizations partnered with us whose services aid the homeless. This ultimately rewards …

Design an energy efficient “athletic device”, which creates energy, saves money and helps the environment. The device will be a multi-purpose workout machine (multi-purpose gym), which harnesses the energy from the constant motion of our machine during a workout and converts this energy into a reusable form of energy. This machine will ultimately improve and empower our nation’s health, energy and finances, thus giving birth to our invention, “Power of a Nation.”

Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study Of Students And Research Faculty, Jake R. Carlson, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller, Megan R. Sapp Nelson
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Researchers increasingly need to integrate the disposition, management and curation of their data into their current workflows. However, it is not yet clear to what extent faculty and students are sufficiently prepared to take on these responsibilities. This paper articulates the need for a data information literacy program (DIL) to prepare students to engage in such an “e-research” environment. Assessments of faculty interviews and student performance in a geoinformatics course provide complementary sources of information, which are then filtered through the perspective of ACRL’s information literacy competency standards to produce a draft set of outcomes for a data information literacy …

Students' Fourth Amendment Rights In Schools: Strip Searches, Drug Tests, And More, Emily Gold Waldman
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
At the end of June 2009, the Supreme Court decided Safford Unified School District No. 1 v. Redding, a case involving the strip search of a thirteen-year-old girl at an Arizona middle school. Thus, the Court has now decided four cases regarding public school students' Fourth Amendment rights while at school and the time is ripe to take stock of this jurisprudence as a whole. The following discussion provides such an overview. As an initial matter, it is useful to divide the Court's four Fourth Amendment cases into two categories: (1) cases involving suspicion-based searches of individual students, such as …
A Quantitative Study Into Grade Inflation (Perceived And Actual) In The College Of Business, Technologicl University Dublin, Derek Simon
Theses
Most academics have an opinion on the existence or otherwise of grade inflation. Some people deny the existence of grade inflation. Some argue that it is damaging to academia while some argue that it is a normal phenomenon and is not damaging while others assert that it is impossible to measure. Due to the difficulty in measurement of grade inflation this study was devised to measure firsts and distinctions to ascertain the quantity of grade inflation. This study takes a two pronged approach to discovering the real and perceived existence or otherwise of grade inflation in the College. In the …
