Reference Olympic Glory! Motivating Student Employees Through Competitive Training, Hilary Kraus

Library Staff Publications

The Library Olympics included group training sessions, independent learning activities, and team challenges. Training content ranged from basic skills (finding supplies, fixing the stapler) to more complex tasks (locating library resources online, searching the catalog). Concise and specific learning objectives served as the cornerstone of each event. Within those parameters, a concerted effort was made to build humor, physical activity, and competitive energy into events.

This poster session featured graphic signage from the program, sample event materials, and feedback from participants.

Priorities For Civic And Citizenship Education In Europe, David Kerr, Linda Sturman, Tim Friedman

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) focused on the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens. Preparing students for citizenship involves developing relevant knowledge and understanding as well as encouraging the formation of positive attitudes toward being a citizen. The conceptual background for, and the design of ICCS were described in the assessment framework (Schulz, Fraillon, Ainley, Losito, & Kerr, 2008) and the international results were reported in its international reports (Schulz, Ainley, Fraillon, Kerr & Losito, 2010a & 2010b). This paper provides an overview of the results from the regional assessment …

Perceptions Of High School Minority Students And High School Teachers Regarding Racism: A Phenomenological Study, Paige Shiver Boomer Apr 2011

Perceptions Of High School Minority Students And High School Teachers Regarding Racism: A Phenomenological Study, Paige Shiver Boomer

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Research shows that racism is still prevalent in schools today. This qualitative study using a phenomenological design identified different forms of racism in schools and the impact racism has on students and teachers. The study identifies the perceptions 9th-12th grade minority students and high school teachers have regarding racism, and compares and contrast those perceptions in a rural Georgia high school. Participants were selected from a pool of approximately 103 ethnic minority high school students and 68 high school teachers. The participants were selected through purposeful sampling due to ones minority status or employment status. Surveys, individual interviews, and journaling …

Courthouses Vs. Statehouses?, William S. Koski Apr 2011

Courthouses Vs. Statehouses?, William S. Koski

Michigan Law Review

Just over twenty years ago, the Kentucky Supreme Court declared the commonwealth's primary and secondary public-education finance system-indeed, the entire system of primary and secondary public education in Kentucky-unconstitutional under the "common schools" clause of the education article in Kentucky's constitution. That case has been widely cited as having ushered in the "adequacy" movement in school-finance litigation and reform, in which those challenging state school-funding schemes argue that the state has failed to ensure that students are provided an adequate education guaranteed by their state constitutions. Since the Rose decision in Kentucky, some thirty-three school-finance lawsuits have reached final decisions …

Epistemic Strategies For Solving Two-Dimensional Physics Problems, Mary Elyse Hing-Hickman Apr 2011

Epistemic Strategies For Solving Two-Dimensional Physics Problems, Mary Elyse Hing-Hickman

Physics Theses & Dissertations

An epistemic strategy is one in which a person takes a piece of knowledge and uses it to create new knowledge. Students in algebra and calculus based physics courses use epistemic strategies to solve physics problems. It is important to map how students use these epistemic strategies to solve physics problems in order to provide insight into the problem solving process.

In this thesis three questions were addressed: (1) What epistemic strategies do students use when solving two-dimensional physics problems that require vector algebra? (2) Do vector preconceptions in kinematics and Newtonian mechanics hinder a student's ability to apply the …

Advising Task Force Report, Angie Bomier, Kellian Clink, Sarah Glaser, Sara Granberg-Rademacker, Sarah Koenen, Dan Kromer, Jane Mcconnell

Library Services Publications

There is compelling evidence that advising is considered very important by students, that academic advising is an important factor in retention, and that many students at Minnesota State University, Mankato, feel that their advising experience is less than ideal. Many faculty feel frustrated with their lack of time, their lack of training, and the lack of a centralized advising resource that quickly and reliably provides information about policies and procedures necessary for good advising. The following report describes the issues uncovered by Noel-Levitz and NSSE, a pilot study matching survey done in 2006, an in-depth conversation with graduation evaluators here, …

Sudden Possibilities: Porpoises, Eggcorns, And Error, Darren Crovitz Mar 2011

Sudden Possibilities: Porpoises, Eggcorns, And Error, Darren Crovitz

Faculty Articles

[...] the keys to their development as writers often lie hidden in the very features of their writing that English teachers have been trained to brush aside with a marginal code letter or a scribbled injunction to "Proofread!" (5) A punitive emphasis on correctness, Shaughnessy argues, can actually have the opposite of its intended effect on basic writers, stifling their experiments with language for fear of failure (8). A reflection on the rationale of error-making must extend beyond a student's apparent inability to memorize and apply a rule, toward deeper considerations: "a teacher who would work with [basic writers] might …

Extension Learners' Use Of Electronic Technology, Joseph F. Guenthner, Benjamin G. Swan Feb 2011

Extension Learners' Use Of Electronic Technology, Joseph F. Guenthner, Benjamin G. Swan

Journal of Extension

Extension clientele use electronic technology for entertainment, communication, and business. Educational programs that use electronic technology can enhance learning. To learn more about use of electronic technology among Extension clientele, we surveyed 80 university students and 135 potato farmers. We found that the farmers were likely to use more technology than the students were. We also found that younger people used more technology and that awareness of technology and source of news were other significant variables. One implication for Extension practitioners is that use of electronic technology by farmers should not be underestimated.

On Misconceptions About Behavior Analysis Among University Students And Teachers, Erik Arntzen, Jon Lokke, Gunn Lokke, Dag-Erik Eilertsen Jan 2011

On Misconceptions About Behavior Analysis Among University Students And Teachers, Erik Arntzen, Jon Lokke, Gunn Lokke, Dag-Erik Eilertsen

The Psychological Record

Students frequently show misconceptions regarding scientific psychology in general and basic concepts in behavior analysis in particular. We wanted to replicate the study by Lamal (1995) and to expand the study by including some additional statements. In the current study, the focus was on misconceptions about behavior analysis held by undergraduates, by students in a master program in behavior analysis, by teachers in university colleges, and by a group of students without any formal training in psychology. The results showed that participants in all groups showed misconceptions. Students in the master program held the fewest misconceptions, while traditional psychology students …
