Little Classroom On The Playground : Increasing Student Academic Achievement Through Integrating The Playground Into Academics, Lora Ann Carey

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Academic learning has long been relegated to the realm of the classroom. However, academic learning need not be limited to the indoor environment but in spilling out into the playground makes learning more relevant and engaging for students. However, few teachers regularly use the outdoors as part of academic instruction. This raised the question, “what hinders teachers from using the playground?” To better understand the attitudes and perspectives teachers hold about the playground's role in education, surveys were distributed to pre-service and in-service teachers. Most teachers felt that the playground should be used for movement activities like recess and physical …

“I Just Wikipedia It”: Information Behavior Of First-Year Writing Students, Megan Whitney Olsen, A. R. Diekema

English Faculty Publications

First-year writing students are a very large, diverse, and ubiquitous information user group, as writing courses are typically required of all undergraduate students, regardless of major. While in their institution's writing program, students frequently must utilize research (information) in their writing assignments. While this formal, task-related information behavior is important for stakeholders in the fields of information science and the humanities to understand, little research has been done on this significant group of students. This study arrived at key exploratory findings by collecting data and context from first-year writing students through semi-structured interviews. The researchers found that students continue to …

Adventures In Teaching: A Professor Goes To High School To Learn About Teaching Math, Darryl H. Yong Jan 2012

Adventures In Teaching: A Professor Goes To High School To Learn About Teaching Math, Darryl H. Yong

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

During the 2009–2010 academic year I did something unusual for a university mathematician on sabbatical: I taught high school mathematics in a large urban school district. This might not be so strange except that my school does not have a teacher preparation program and only graduates a few students per year who intend to be teachers. Why did I do this? I, like many of you, am deeply concerned about mathematics education and I wanted to see what a typical high school in my city is like. Because I regularly work with high school mathematics teachers, I wanted to experience …
