Students’ Views Of E-Learning: The Impact Of Technologies On Learning In Higher Education In Ireland, Eileen O'Donnell, Mary Sharp

Books/Book Chapters

Students are the end users of the Information Systems that educators use to enhance students’ learning experiences. The use of technologies in education has altered the ways in which lecturers and students can interact and has expanded the volume of information that students can access. This study was undertaken to obtain students perspectives on the uses of technologies in higher education to assist educators in improving the pedagogical design of e-learning platforms, known as learning management systems. This chapter provides students’ perspectives on the academic use of technologies in two higher education institutions in Ireland. Analysis of the responses received …

Teaching Students To Negotiate Like A Lawyer, John M. Lande Jan 2012

Teaching Students To Negotiate Like A Lawyer, John M. Lande

Faculty Publications

Some important stages might include: (1) initial client interview, (2) negotiation of a retainer agreement, (3) developing good working relationships with counterpart lawyers, (4) conducting factual investigation and/or legal research, (5) working with counterparts to plan the negotiation process, (6) resolving discovery disputes, (7) preparing client for negotiations, (8) conducting an ultimate negotiation, (9) engaging a mediator and mediating the matter, and (10) drafting a settlement agreement. This essay suggests that by using both single-stage and multi-stage simulations, instructors can better prepare students for negotiations that they will actually conduct in practice. These suggestions grow out my book, Lawyering with …

Does The Success Of A School-Based Hpv Vaccine Programme Depend On Teachers' Knowledge And Religion? - A Survey In A Multicultural Society, Y.L. Woo, S.M. Razali, K.R. Chong, S.Z. Omar

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Organized introduction of prophylactic human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination can reduce the burden of cervical cancer in developing countries. One of the most effective ways is through a national school-based program. Information on teachers is therefore important since this group may have a disproportionate influence in the success of any implementation. Objective: To assess teachers' knowledge and perception of HPV, cervical cancer and HPV vaccine prior to commencing a school-based HPV vaccination program in a multiethnic, predominantly Muslim country. Factors associated with acceptability of the vaccine are identified. Method: A bilingual questionnaire was applied to 1,500 secondary school teachers from 20 …

This study evaluated an inclusive Theatre Communications Class implemented at a suburban high school. The class is designed to target social and communication skills in students with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) using role playing theatre activities with students without ASD that are prepared and performed for the class. Caregivers of 2 students with ASD completed the Autism Social Skills Profile prior to enrollment. Two students without ASD completed the Multidimensional Attitudes Scale to assess their attitudes towards individuals with autism prior to enrollment. In December of 2011, after a semester in the program, they completed the measures again. Analyses revealed …

Momentum, Julianna Bond, Sara Kendrick, Tyler Anderson Jan 2012

Momentum, Julianna Bond, Sara Kendrick, Tyler Anderson

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

Momentum will serve several functions in the greater Dallas community. At its most basic level, it will help to inspire a passion and excitement for the study of science. Bridging the gap between disciplines, this publication will focus on ideas about science and technology (like a scientific journal) and will promote intellectual exploration in the approachable manner of a literary magazine.

Green Riba, Rahfin Faruk, Daisuke Takeda Jan 2012

Green Riba, Rahfin Faruk, Daisuke Takeda

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

In Arabic, riba' is a loan with the condition that the borrower will return to the lender more than and better than the quantity borrowed - interest. This proposal sees traditional interest as oppressive - especially in light of new evidence about the role of microfinance institutions and usury - and counter intuitive to traditional small-scale entrepreneurship. The proposed initiative also seeks to use elements of business sustainability and environmentalism as core roots of the plan. The combination of two progressive ideas - the lack of riba' and biocentrism - are core ethical components to Green Riba. However, in this …

Vm Refugee: Dallas Community, Jose Ramon Campos, Nick Bastoni

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

The open and welcoming atmosphere that comprises SMU here in Dallas, Texas is something that the students, faculty, and administration can look forward to day in and day out, a comfort not vastly shared within the sprawling parts of the city. Diverse and growing, Dallas is home to a large refugee population. Due to the current and historically ongoing economic, political, cultural, and natural turmoil in East Africa, Dallas has become a home away from home for many East African peoples, mostly from Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. A large part end up being relocated in the nearby Vickery Meadows neighborhood, …

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

In 1993, the proposed Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project of Waxahachie, Texas, was cancelled. This massive structure would have been three times as large as the recently completed Large Hadron Collider in Geneva and many times more powerful. With its cancellation, two generations of physics progress have been lost for the United States. This singular event is epitomical of a broader set of issues in the United States; namely, the issues of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, their funding, and research and development in these fields.

In the second decade of the 21st century, we face a continuation …

Kairos Undergraduate Publication, Arnaud Zimmern, Taylor Kara, Tyler Anderson, Rahfin Faruk

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

In an effort to usher SMU into an even more academic centennial and change the popular perception of Dallas with regard to the scholastic caliber of its central university, we propose to publish a review of the most exemplary undergraduate textual output over the span of an academic year. The work to compile all the formal undergraduate research into an online journal is already underway by the efforts of Prof. Robert Kehoe. Our magazine would serve, in part, as an appetizer to his website; but more than that, the review would also cover Richter Fellowship papers, Big Ideas papers, Departmental …

Open Minds, Trisha St-Fleur Jan 2012

Open Minds, Trisha St-Fleur

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

Young adults leaving the foster child care system often experience hardships that many of their peers do not have to address. Some of these former foster children become victims of homelessness, higher rates of unemployment, poverty, and disproportionate rates of incarceration. Nationally, only about 50 percent of these young people earn a high school diploma and less than two percent of this cohort pursues higher education in either the two-year or four-year sectors.

Due to a myriad of systematic problems and social conditions, the minds of these young adults become limited to the vast opportunities that could be available to …

Smu West Dallas Youth Cultural Initiative, Savannah Niles, Diana Antohe, Ray Henninger, Oscar Mejia

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

The SMU-West Dallas Youth Cultural Initiative began through our enrollment in Bernado Diaz’s Artist Residency directed studies course, Art as Social Practice. We are now hoping to continue our workshops and events with the West Dallas community at the Bataan and McMilan centers beyond the scope of this directed studies course, on the basis of the networks and relationships we have already initiated in the area. We intend to:

• Develop and implement culturally-driven curriculum for students participating in the afterschool programs of the West Dallas Community Centers.

• Pilot a program at SMU that allows students to engage in …

Increasing The Impact Of Sotl: Two Sometimes Neglected Opportunities, Kathleen Mckinney Jan 2012

Increasing The Impact Of Sotl: Two Sometimes Neglected Opportunities, Kathleen Mckinney

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The most important function of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is to enhance student learning. There are numerous strategies to increase application and positive impact of our SoTL work on student learning. In this essay, I remind readers of two, sometimes neglected, strategies: 1. incorporating methods and measures in our SoTL studies to find and understand the processes and conditions at work and 2. doing all we can to share the results of relevant SoTL work directly with students so they can make use of the implications of SoTL findings. Our neglect of these two strategies in much …

Perils And Pontifications: Reflections On The Failures And Joys Of A Law Teacher, John W. Teeter Jr Jan 2012

Perils And Pontifications: Reflections On The Failures And Joys Of A Law Teacher, John W. Teeter Jr

Faculty Articles

Next to fatherhood and my faith, teaching is what matters most to me, and yet it has been filled with failures as well as undeniable fulfillment and joy. I hope to enrich the lives of teachers who will replace me behind the podium, and that this article will serve as both an inspiration and a warning to new professors and those contemplating life in academics.

I offer the following guidance. Look outside yourself so you can look within yourself and then share what you find with the world. Actively seek the friendship and guidance of others, especially those from different …

Nonnatives' Perceptions Of Group Work: A Study Of Their Attitudes And Experiences In The Group Work Setting, Ellen Nogueira Rodrigues Jan 2012

Nonnatives' Perceptions Of Group Work: A Study Of Their Attitudes And Experiences In The Group Work Setting, Ellen Nogueira Rodrigues

Master's Theses

Problem. Studies on group work in the field of second language learning have pointed out positive outcomes of this classroom instruction for providing output and input opportunities for language production, for negotiations of meaning, and for academic language. Furthermore, social-psychological factors that hinder language development are asserted to be prevented by the use of group work. Even though group work may create an excellent environment for second language acquisition, research has indicated that few opportunities seem to be conceded for second language speakers to take active participation in discussions. In short, it seems that nonnatives’ interactions are hindered due to …

The data was collected from two focus group interviews with 11 participants in focus group 1 and 10 participants in focus group 2. Using a generic qualitative approach, eight initial themes were identified after focus group 1 and eight clarifying questions were developed based on these themes. During focus group 2, these clarifying questions were utilized to further explore the eight initial themes in more depth …

A University Course's Influence On Students' Perpectives Regarding Sabbathkeeping As Spiritual Discipline, Ifeoma I. Kwesi Jan 2012

A University Course's Influence On Students' Perpectives Regarding Sabbathkeeping As Spiritual Discipline, Ifeoma I. Kwesi

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Although most students who attend Oakwood University are self-identified Seventh-day Adventist Christians, from general observation of their activities, conversations, and attitudes displayed on any given Friday night and/or Saturday (i.e., Sabbath), it would be easy to conclude that many neither enter nor exit their collegiate experience with a holistic understanding or experience of Sabbath and Sabbathkeeping.

Methodology

1. As part of the research for this project I used a pre- and post-test methodology to determine the cognitive, behavioral and affective realms of Sabbath and Sabbathkeeping among students enrolled in RP131: Spiritual Formation for Ministry. The intervention was the aforementioned …

Sensory Processing In Children With Adhd: A Classroom Study And Rational Item Analysis, Jason Mathison Jan 2012

Sensory Processing In Children With Adhd: A Classroom Study And Rational Item Analysis, Jason Mathison

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

In the classroom, distinguishing between sensory modulation disorder (SMD), one proposed subtype of Sensory Processing Disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be difficult given their similar behavioral manifestations. The overlap between these two disorders and the prevelance of rating scales used for gathering diagnostic information warrant a closer look at items on commonly used rating scales to ensure discriminative validity. This pilot study examined specific patterns of SMD in 24 children with ADHD using the Sensory Profile School Companion (SPSC), which includes four components of SMD, namely, Seeking, Avoiding, Registration, and Sensitivity. As hypothesized, the majority of teacher …

Executive Functions In The Schools: What Do Teachers Know About Executive Functions And How They Impact Student Progress?, Larissa Morgan-Borkowsky Jan 2012

Executive Functions In The Schools: What Do Teachers Know About Executive Functions And How They Impact Student Progress?, Larissa Morgan-Borkowsky

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The current study surveyed middle school teachers on their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and expectations regarding executive functions in relation to students’ academic success. The results of this study indicated that teachers perceived themselves as knowledgeable of executive functions. A disconnect was found between teacher responses to an open-ended question regarding abilities and skills required for academic success and their endorsements of specific questions regarding executive functions. Motivation, problem-solving, and basic academic skills were indicated as being most important for success, but two of these are considered capacities students possess intrinsically. When asked about specific executive functions however, they rated them …
