Writing-To-Learn : Attitudes Of Nursing Students At Sultan Qaboos University, Shreedevi Balachandran, Ramesh Venkatesaperumal, Jothi Shukri, Raghda K.
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess the attitude of Omani nursing students towards writing-to-learn (WTL) and its relationship to demographic variables, self-efficacy and the writing process. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used to evaluate attitudes towards WTL by Sultan Qaboos University nursing students. A convenience sample of 106 students was used and data collected between October 2009 and March 2010. A modified version of the WTL attitude scale developed by Dobie and Poirrier was used to collect the data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analysis. Results: Senior and junior students had more positive attitudes to …

With an ever-increasing immigrant population, schools across the nation are being forced to mold their programs to fit the needs of students who do not know the local language and culture here in the United States. These students’ future rests on their success in these matters. If they fail in their new schools, this failure will set the tone for the rest of their lives. Where they work, live, or continue their education all depend on their success at their new schools. For this reason, I chose to survey students, teachers, and tutors/translators to gather their opinions on how to …

Assessments Of Empathy In Medical School Admissions: What Additional Evidence Is Needed?, Mohammadreza Hojat
Assessments Of Empathy In Medical School Admissions: What Additional Evidence Is Needed?, Mohammadreza Hojat
Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers
The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) sponsored a symposium on the theme of Examin-ing the Evidence with Regard to Character, Personality and Values in Medical School Selection which was held on October 14, 2013 at the University of Sheffield Medical School in the United Kingdom. I was invited to speak about credibility issues related to personality assessments in health profession educations. To my pleasant surprise, I found the European audience receptive (more than their counterparts in the United States) to the idea of using personality assess-ments in admission decisions. There seems to be a hesita-tion among leaders …

Comparing Online With Brick And Mortar Course Learning Outcomes: An Analysis Of Quantitative Methods Curriculum In Public Administration, Ronald A. Harris, Gleb O. Nikitenko
Comparing Online With Brick And Mortar Course Learning Outcomes: An Analysis Of Quantitative Methods Curriculum In Public Administration, Ronald A. Harris, Gleb O. Nikitenko
Public and Nonprofit Administration
Teaching graduate students in an intensive adult-learning format presents a special challenge for quantitative analytical competencies. Students often lack necessary background, skills and motivation to deal with quantitative-skill-based course work. This study compares learning outcomes for graduate students enrolled in three course sections (cohorts) taking a quantitative methods course in a public administration program. One cohort of students was taught online, while two student cohorts were taught face-to-face in a traditional classroom setting. Most of the online students resided in the same geographic location as the “brick-and-mortar’ students. While student backgrounds and demographics were comparable, there were notable differences in …

Core Professional Nursing Values As Experienced By Baccalaureate Nursing Students Who Are Men, Bonnie Schmidt
Core Professional Nursing Values As Experienced By Baccalaureate Nursing Students Who Are Men, Bonnie Schmidt
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Experts have called for greater diversity in the nursing workforce; however, men remain underrepresented in the nursing profession. The presence of cultural dissonance among male nursing students has been documented in prior research but little is known about their values that are culturally influenced. The purpose of this study was to understand and interpret the meaning of core professional nursing values to male baccalaureate nursing students. The research question was: what is the meaning of core professional nursing values to nursing students who are men.
The study setting was an undergraduate baccalaureate school of nursing in the Midwest. Using a …
Shooting Fish In A Barrel: A Demonstration Of The Refraction Of Light, Walter Trikosko
Shooting Fish In A Barrel: A Demonstration Of The Refraction Of Light, Walter Trikosko
Faculty Publications
This is not a treatise on optics or the index of refraction. It is merely a demonstration that will surprise and engage many of your students. We have all put a pencil in a beaker of water and observed how it appears to bend.1 Not so much fun or engaging, is it? Why not illustrate this optical effect by taking your students spearfishing? Simulated spearfishing, to avoid the financial and legal ramifications. I intercepted a quiver of 30-in long aluminum shaft arrows that were on their way to the dumpster because, if for no other reason, my office could …

Assessment & Feedback Cases
This assessment on e-tourism asks students to evaluate the e-tourism strategies of a particular destination. Students are broken into groups of 4-5 and all have to participate in all tasks. The wiki style allows the lecturer to see exactly who is contributing to what extent. It also encourages collaboration and students like it as it is something new.

Assessment & Feedback Cases
Students prepare and deliver a presentation to their peers based on either a single journal article or a specific topic/issue within music education they have researched. Within some courses, this is done as a group project while in others it is an individual assignment.
