It's Just One Of Those Gender Role Things: The Woman Does The Shopping, And The Man Fixes The Doors: Irish Advertising Students And Postfeminist Gendered Discourses, Aileen O'Driscoll

Irish Communication Review

In 2010 the European Commission published a report outlining its official position on ‘Breaking gender stereotypes in Media’ thereby explicitly recognising that advertising’s dissemination of images that depict gender stereotyping works to uphold gender inequalities. In addition, the European Coalition against Media Sexism (WECAMS) has engaged with the European Parliament and the European Advertising Standards Alliance in a bid to open up discussion on the possibility for standardising guidelines aimed at tackling and preventing sexism and gender stereotyping in advertising. Furthermore, over a more than forty-year history feminist media research has consistently pointed to problematic gendered imagery in advertising texts …

Market Reach And Advertising Medium: Assessing How Students Learn About Research Services, Stephanie Wiegand Nov 2016

Market Reach And Advertising Medium: Assessing How Students Learn About Research Services, Stephanie Wiegand

University Libraries Publications

Promotion of services is something we discuss often in libraries; however, it is rare to find a comprehensive promotion plan for research services or any evaluation of promotional services beyond case studies of a specific promotion. How do we know where to place our time and efforts if we have not assessed how students learn about research services? In the 2015-2016 academic year, the Library Research Services department at the University of Northern Colorado Libraries set out to answer this question. Surveys were sent to individuals contacting a librarian for in-depth research assistance. The goal of this survey was to …

Everything Is Awesome: Teaming Up With Students For Library Outreach, Raymundo Andrade, John Jackson

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Successful library outreach at Loyola Marymount University would be impossible without students. Whether it’s designing an event poster, conducting community tours, spreading information via word-of-mouth, or creating content for social media, students are involved at every level of our programming and outreach efforts. This presentation will explore some of the successes (and failures) of integrating students as employees and volunteers to help promote the college library. By trusting students to carry the message of the library into the campus community, this presentation will illustrate how outreach teams can develop more efficient, organic, and creative marketing strategies.

Relationships Between Motor Coordination And Academic Achievement In Middle School Children, Daniel V. Chagas, Gustavo Leporace, Luiz Alberto Batista

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 9(5): 616-624, 2016. Although it is recognized that children with a marked impairment in the development of motor coordination may show difficulty in gaining academic achievement, research examining the relationship between gross motor coordination and academic achievement in children without intellectual disabilities is limited. This study aimed to examine whether gross motor coordination is associated with academic achievement among children. Middle school children (n=122) were recruited. Writing, reading, and mathematics performance were used to attribute academic achievement. Gross motor coordination was assessed using the Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder test. Pearson and partial correlations were used to …

Part I provides an in-depth factual overview, beginning with the Sweet Briar College's founding in the early 1900s. The commentary then turns to the controversial decision to close and discusses the facts and legal theories of the case, the decisions by the circuit court and the Supreme Court of Virginia, and the eventual settlement that kept the school alive.

In Part II, the discussion shifts to the landmark nature of this case, not only for Sweet Briar College, but also for other Virginia colleges and non-profits around the country. The essay analyzes the legal questions arising from the case, including …

The Effects Of One-To-One Technology On Students In Schools With A High Population Of Students From Low-Socioeconomic Households, Ryan J. Persinger Nov 2016

The Effects Of One-To-One Technology On Students In Schools With A High Population Of Students From Low-Socioeconomic Households, Ryan J. Persinger

Dissertations

Low socioeconomic status is widespread throughout the United States (Makarewicz, 2013). Education is one factor to help people break the cycle of poverty (Payne, 2013). This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of one-to-one technology on equipping students from low-income families with the education needed to break the cycle of generational poverty. A rural school district in southwest Missouri was selected for the study. Students, parents, and educators were surveyed to gain their perspectives concerning the efficiency of one-to-one technology. Data were gathered to assess the statistical differences in English II end-of-course exam scores, attendance rates, graduation rates, and …

Application Of An Artificial Neural Network To Predict Graduation Success At The United States Military Academy, Gene Lesinski, Steven Corns, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a neural network approach to classify student graduation status based upon selected academic, demographic, and other indicators. A multi-layer feedforward network with backpropagation learning is used as the model framework. The model is trained, tested, and validated using 5100 student samples with data compiled from admissions records and institutional research databases. Nine input variables consist of categorical and numeric data elements including: high school rank, high school quality, standardized test scores, high school faculty assessments, extra-curricular activity score, parent's education status, and time since high school graduation. These inputs and the multi-layer neural network model are used …

Grad Student Guest Post: What To Do When You Don't Know What To Do, Admin

Blog Posts

Graduate school comes to us all in different ways: you might read a book that piques your interest, you might have a passion for a particular cuisine, you might have a career goal that requires a higher degree. Or you could be like me, and apply to graduate school because you're just not sure what's coming next. Two years ago I was finishing up a student teaching internship that just wasn't fitting and I found myself wondering what on earth would come next, often out loud and often to my dog.
