School of Nursing and Midwifery

This pilot study aimed to provide students with a learning activity to develop a global perspective of health care. Senior nursing students from New Zealand and the United Kingdom (n=15) were allocated to eNetwork small-groups. Students met weekly for one month via audio/video-conferencing for discussions. Students reported that this collaborative activity enabled them to engage purposefully with other students. Christian Teachers’ Experiences Motivating High School Students In The Pacific Northwest: A Transcendental Phenomenology, Michael Anthony Rickman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study sought to describe experiences of Christian high school teachers motivating students in the Pacific Northwest to be autonomous learners, competent in skills and achievements, and relationally balanced within a Christian environment. The literature indicates two phenomena exist. First, student motivation decreases as they progress; and second, a gap exists in the literature related to Christian schoolteachers’ experiences motivating students. The research question is “How do Christian high school teachers describe their experiences motivating students to be autonomous, competent, and relational?” Purposeful sampling produced nine participants from Christian high schools in the Pacific …

Letter To Students Regarding Recent Events, Rebecca Lauck Cleary

Dear New and Returning Students in Southern Studies: Last week was a difficult one at the University of Mississippi. On Saturday, a male student allegedly took the life of a female student, and on Thursday images surfaced of three UM students, two of them armed, celebrating the desecration of a memorial to Emmett Till, whose murder we often understand as catalyzing the Civil Rights Movement. We are horrified by the violence of all of these acts.

Shifting The Balance Of Power: Asking Questions About The Comics-Questions Curriculum, Stephanie M. Margolin, Sarah Laleman Ward, Mason Brown

Publications and Research

We shift the balance of power in this paper by discussing a particular library lesson, the Comics-Questions Curriculum, with some of the students who participated in it, several years after they completed the workshop. By interviewing students and including them as co-authors of this paper, we re-center students in our analysis of this curriculum. In the process of reflecting on our work with the students and each other, we begin to see ways to engage in more meaningful, longer-term assessment of our classroom work while involving student voices in the process. We share our experiences here in order to take …

Students are often faced with barriers acquiring a second language due to various factors such as language anxiety, learning differences, and a lack of speaking time with the language. The purposes of this qualitative study were to: a) determine students' perceptions of the effectiveness of a digital language lab on their self-efficacy in second language acquisition at the secondary level, and b) discern teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of the lab as well as recommendations for best practices in teacher training and implementation. Twenty-seven Italian and Spanish students and 12 world language teachers from two fairly rural high schools in …

Community-Working Occupational Therapists Serving As Fieldwork Supervisors: Characteristics And Associated Factors, Tore Bonsaksen, Anne-Stine Dolva, Sissel Horghagen, Unni Sveen, Cathrine Hagby, Cathrine Arntzen

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

As enrollment numbers grow in occupational therapy academic programs in Norway, the need for more fieldwork placements and supervisors increases. More knowledge about factors of importance for occupational therapists’ decisions to take on the role of fieldwork supervisor may promote easier access to supervisors who are ready for the task, and it may assist in addressing the barriers for those who are not. We recruited a sample of 561 community-working occupational therapists for an electronic survey conducted in 2017. Quantitative survey responses were obtained and used in the current study. The differences between supervisors and non-supervisors were examined with independent …

The science fair is coming up and the students need to create an experiment. Fergus and Zeke are very excited to participate in the science fair. The trouble is, they can’t think of a good experiment that will work for them. Lucy, a student in the class, creates a science experiment where she trains Fergus and Zeke to run in a maze. Fergus and Zeke practice with Lucy, and they even train Lucy to cheer for them so that they will run faster. Everyone cheers and claps after Lucy’s demonstration, and her project is a success!

This study investigated the qualities, knowledge, and skills of effective teachers for students with emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD) from the perspective of six special education teachers. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and a focus group. An analysis of the data yielded three themes.
