In the current study we evaluated an afterschool nutrition education programme, called Vetri Cooking Lab (VCL), for promoting healthy and diverse eating habits among at-risk children in the Greater Philadelphia area. To understand potential programme impacts, we conducted a longitudinal analysis of survey data collected before and after participation in VCL. Main study included cooking confidence, cooking knowledge, changes in dietary consumption behaviours, and changes in vegetable preferences. Participants included students in grades 3-11 enrolled in VCL during the 2018-19 school year at VCL sites (n = 60) throughout Philadelphia, PA, and Camden, NJ. Eligible participants completed surveys both before …

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Rising levels of depression among adolescents is an important issue to teachers and school administrators, as teenagers spend the majority of their time in the school environment. By analyzing individual interviews with 15 public high school teachers using a modified grounded theory approach, this qualitative study examines the role high school teachers might play in identifying and referring students who exhibit signs and symptoms of depression. Results provide guidance for high school teachers in connecting students with appropriate services and identifying common barriers and facilitating factors in this process. Specific recommendations are outlined to help aid schools in the identification …

We aimed to qualitatively describe the extent to which students perceived the six TIME domains as they navigated critical incidents during their EM clerkship.
METHODS: We employed a constructivist, modified grounded theory approach to explore medical students' experiences. We used the critical incident technique to elicit narratives to better understand the six TIME domains as they naturally appear in the clerkship. Participants were asked to …

Difference In Persistence Scores Among Community College Students: A Causal-Comparative Study, Jessica Jean Deroche
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study is to determine if there are persistence score differences among students who have taken EDUC 1300 – Learning Frameworks, those who have not taken the course, and if there are any generational status differences. There is a need to better understand persistence in students, especially within community colleges given the increased enrollment rates, and low retention and completion rates these schools are experiencing. This study provided an examination of the persistence scores of 194 students attending a multi-campus community college in the south utilizing the College Persistence Questionnaire. A Student Co-Creation Lab As A Sustainable System For Oer Development, Sarah Ann Stokes
Theses and Dissertations
Open educational resources (OER) are digital and non-digital resources for teaching, learning, and research that are available for no cost and licensed with various open licenses, permitting their widespread modification and use. While these resources afford benefits to post-secondary students in terms of reduced cost, ease of access, and potential for customization, faculty members in Ontario, Canada face many barriers to creating these resources for their classes. While many post-secondary institutions have engaged in some form of OER-development initiative, the initiatives are typically not sustainable in the long term. This study explores the model, including the tools, techniques, and workflows, …

Psychotherapy Utilization And Outcomes Of Military Veteran-College Students And Student-Rotc Members Compared To Similar Nonmilitary College Students, Jacob Michael Christian Goetz
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines current trends of university counseling center (UCC) utilization among Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) students and student-military Veterans, compared to their nonmilitary-minded peers at a large, private, western university. Given likely differences in the lived experiences between these three populations, research is needed to provide insight on the treatment needs of military-minded students. We examine counseling center data for ROTC (n = 88), Veteran (n = 93), and nonmilitary-minded (n = 16,268) students who presented for counseling services from 2014-2021. A matched sample was obtained from the dataset for some of the analyses. The three groups are …

Mhealth Intervention For Elevated Blood Pressure Among College Students: Single-Arm Intervention Study, Dieu-My T. Tran, Catherine E. Dingley, Roger Bonilla
Nursing Faculty Research
Background: Current evidence reveals a growing pattern of hypertension among young adults, significantly increasing their risk for cardiovascular disease later in life. Young adults, particularly those of college age, often develop risk factors related to lifestyle choices in diet, exercise, and alcohol consumption. Developing useful interventions that can assist with screening and possible behavioral modifications that are suitable and appealing to college-aged young adults could help with early identification and intervention for hypertension. Recent studies indicate mobile health (mHealth) apps are acceptable and effective for communication and message delivery among this population.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to …

Preparing Teachers For The Rise Of Challenging Behaviors, Abbie Chesling
Preparing Teachers For The Rise Of Challenging Behaviors, Abbie Chesling
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Previous research indicates the increase of challenging behaviors observed and how those behaviors impact the classroom. Findings from the research show the lifelong effects of adverse childhood experiences, trauma manifestations, and educational impacts. Other studies acknowledged educators and their experiences with negative behaviors in the classroom. Those same studies recognized a lack of teacher readiness to manage challenging behaviors in the classroom. A school improvement plan was designed to provide all school staff with targeted professional development to help mitigate challenging behaviors and the lasting impact in the school setting.

Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise's Impact On Cognitive Functions In Eighth Grade Students., Heather Erwin, Sarah Schreiber
Kinesiology and Health Promotion Faculty Publications
The present study examined the impact of aerobic and anaerobic exercise on cognitive abilities in eighth grade students at one middle school in southeastern US. It is known that youth do not meet recommended physical activity levels, yet there is research demonstrating a clear connection between aerobic exercise and academic performance. There is a gap in evidence regarding anaerobic exercise and cognitive capabilities. If professionals know which type of exercise is most beneficial for enhancing cognition in youth, it will behoove them to incorporate these practices in physical education and other areas throughout the school day for students. Thus, this …

Improving Student Perceptions Of Collaboration By Using Interprofessional Education, Valerie L. Beshears
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Educators must include interprofessional education (IPE) in the healthcare provider curriculum. Including IPE is the first step in changing the healthcare culture toward interprofessional practice. The project aims to increase nursing students' perceived ability to collaborate with patients, nurses, and other healthcare professionals by introducing IPE to first-semester nursing students. The students will participate in an IPE activity and score a pre-test/post-test survey to assess their perceived ability to collaborate before and after the IPE activity. The data collected from this activity answered the quality improvement question: Among first-semester nursing students in a BSN program, how does incorporating an IPE …
