What Law Schools Are Doing To Accommodate Students With Learning Disabilities, Donald H. Stone Jan 2000

What Law Schools Are Doing To Accommodate Students With Learning Disabilities, Donald H. Stone

All Faculty Scholarship

The year 2000 marks the tenth anniversary of the 1990 passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”). It also marks a quarter century since the passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (“EAHCA”). The EAHCA opened the doors for disabled children to receive a free and appropriate education. As a result of this special education law, many disabled young people were able to succeed and are now knocking at law schools' doors seeking admission.

On July 26, 1990, Congress enacted the ADA, a landmark civil rights bill designed to open up all aspects of American life to …

International Student-Athlete Adjustment To College: A Preliminary Analysis, Lynn L. Ridinger, Donna L. Pastore Jan 2000

International Student-Athlete Adjustment To College: A Preliminary Analysis, Lynn L. Ridinger, Donna L. Pastore

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

This preliminary investigation was undertaken to determine how well international student–athletes adjusted to college relative to their domestic teammates and the general student body. The results revealed that international student-athletes were significantly more well-adjusted to college than international nonathletes. International student–athletes adjusted to college as well as students and student–athletes from the United States. Results should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. The effects of gender and ethnicity on adjustment to college were also examined.

What Does A Child's Story Tell You?, Tamara Anne Bromley Jan 2000

What Does A Child's Story Tell You?, Tamara Anne Bromley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The stories that students tell in the classroom have the potential to be an invaluable resource for teachers. Through a focus on the language used, these stories can provide teachers with information about their students' sociocultural backgrounds and therefore, the knowledge that students bring to the context of the classroom. In today's diverse classrooms, teachers need to discover this information about their students to enhance the planning process for students' learning. The stories that students tell provide teachers with one avenue by which they can begin to meet the requirements of the Curriculum Framework for Kindergarten to Year 12 Education …

Aboriginal Students Perceptions Of The Effect Of Vocational Education And Training On Post School Experiences, Steven J. Florisson Jan 2000

Aboriginal Students Perceptions Of The Effect Of Vocational Education And Training On Post School Experiences, Steven J. Florisson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Over the past decade there have been dramatic and unprecedented changes in post compulsory education, with an increase of over 40% for year 12 retention rates to 76.6% in 1992 and huge expansion of year 11 and 12 vocational education and training programs. However, for Aboriginal past compulsory age students, the picture is very different. In 1993 the year 12 Aboriginal retention rate was only 24.48% or 982 students (Australia wide), and by 1996 only 10% of the indigenous 15 and older population had any post school qualification, compared to 35% of the total population. Only 34% of West Australian …

The Right To Representation By Counsel In University Disciplinary Proceedings: A Denial Of Due Process Of Law, Robert B. Groholski Jul 1999

The Right To Representation By Counsel In University Disciplinary Proceedings: A Denial Of Due Process Of Law, Robert B. Groholski

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment argues that university students who face suspension or expulsion for disciplinary reasons, as opposed to academic dismissal, are entitled to have retained legal counsel represent them as an element of procedural due process. The article begins with a general discussion of the jurisprudence that has developed concerning the Fourteenth Amendment's Due Process Clause. Utilizing both federal and state court decisions, the comment then demonstrates that university students hold protected liberty and property interests in their collegiate educations or degrees such that the procedural protections of the Due Process Clause are triggered when students face disciplinary suspension or expulsion. …
