Internet Use Policies And Implications For Health Education: A Survey Of Nebraska School Board Presidents, David Dennison, David Corbin, Manoj Sharma, Neal Grandgenett
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes and practices of school board presidents in Nebraska pertaining to Internet use policy-making and its implications on health education. This study utilized a mailed written survey. The data indicated that public school policy makers have significantly different perceptions of health education than of specific selected health education components, i.e., they are not very concerned about access to Internet health education information in general, but they are very concerned about specific areas of health education. Specifically, board presidents were most concerned about access to information about Internet sexuality followed by drug …
All Children Can Learn: Providing Equal Education Opportunities For Migrant Students, Michelle R. Holleman
All Children Can Learn: Providing Equal Education Opportunities For Migrant Students, Michelle R. Holleman
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The United States Supreme Court ruled that once a state undertakes to provide children with educational opportunities, such education services must be available to all children on equal terms. However, even though all states must offer a public education system, certain classes of children are not receiving equal educational opportunities. Migrant children are one of the most disadvantaged groups in today’s education system. Some of the unique challenges these children face include interrupted schooling, limited English proficiency, poverty, lack of health and nutrition, pressures from work and family responsibilities, and a lack of parental involvement in their education. These hurdles …

Improving And Enhancing The Afterschool Program At Brookside School, William E. Kayal
Improving And Enhancing The Afterschool Program At Brookside School, William E. Kayal
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report explains the progress of a program for participants who benefited more than the typical nonparticipants in an afterschool extended-day program. Schubert (1997) stated, "To develop school experience that genuinely engage students and teachers in citizenship, gives meaning and direction to their lives" (p. 82). Results of the study showed that the participants' development was a complex process about the natural reciprocity between self and others with an emphasis on building relationships and providing programs to support student needs. The staff members have always demonstrated through modeling that students are the school's first priority.
Students commented that staff interest …

Development Of A Diagnostic Assessment System To Improve The Motn Ation Of Admitted Students To Matriculate Into The Nursing Program At D’Youville College, Melanie S. Macneil
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Enrollment in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at D'Youville College is below expectations. Although the decline in application rate reflects a national and international trend, the matriculation rate needs to improve. Without adequate numbers of matriculated nursing students at D 'Youville, the nursing program faces closure.
The purpose of this project was to develop a diagnostic assessment system to improve the motivation of admitted students to matriculate into the nursing program at D'Youville College. The research questions concerned information in the literature about motivation to matriculate by students in nursing programs, the specific content and design for …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Tarrant County College (TCC) is a comprehensive community college dedicated to the mission of providing quality education in response to the expectations of the people of Tarrant County. The institution holds student success and learning as top priorities and is dedicated to providing meaningful educational experiences in support of these priorities (Tarrant County College, 2000a).
In recent years TCC has faced many challenges, including state accrediting agency mandates, changing demographics, technological advances, community demands and increased competition, that have necessitated institutional change. The changes are affecting who is being taught as well as the services that are being required.

Students And Due Process In Higher Education: Of Interests And Procedures, Fernand N. Dutile
Students And Due Process In Higher Education: Of Interests And Procedures, Fernand N. Dutile
Journal Articles
In the process of enforcing their academic and disciplinary standards, colleges and universities increasingly find themselves confronting the possibility and even the reality of litigation. At public institutions, of course, the strictures of the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment loom especially large. Meeting the complex needs of their institutions and students as well as the expectations of American courts presents an ongoing and daunting challenge to higher education personnel.
For both internal and external reasons, institutional dealings with aberrant students in public higher education has, over the years, developed on a dual track. Courts themselves have generally treated …

Development Of A Pediatric Specialization Track In The Occupational Therapy Program At College Misericordia, Lalit J. Shah
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The problem under investigation was that there were no classes offered that culminated into a specialization track in the occupational therapy (OT) curriculum. The purpose of this applied dissertation project was to develop a specialization track in pediatrics in OT curriculum at College Misericordia that would provide students with multiple options to complete their educational requirements and also provide specialized training.
There were four research questions for this study: ''What are the advantages of a specialization in pediatrics at College Misericordia?" "What are appropriate components to be included in the development of a specialization program in pediatrics at College Misericordia?" …

An Investigation And Analysis Of The Hispanic Students' Nationwide School Dropout Rates And The Difference Between Those Who Complete Their High School Diploma And Those Who Dropout, Maria Olivia Egemba
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
As the United States embarks on the twenty-first century, anxiety continues about the American educational system. The dropout crisis in the United States and particularly among the Hispanic students is a matter of serious concern for parents, educators, politicians, and the general public. Due to the rapid technological advances, staying in school and graduating is crucial for preparing a skilled, knowledgeable, and flexible work force needed by America to compete in the global economy. Hispanic students are the largest-growing sector of the population and have the highest dropout rate of any major segment of the U.S. population (Hispanic Dropout Project, …

Television As A Medium To College Students' Predispositions: Portrayals Of Professors And Their Profession, Mona Millicent Lauber
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Students bring preconceived beliefs and attitudes to their initial college experience. These predispositions influence their communication and interaction with faculty and others in the higher education environment. Previous research identified family, school, and peers as sources that contribute to the formation of students' predispositions. This study was designed to explore television as a fourth medium to college students' predispositions; Drawing from the perspectives of social cognitive theory and cultivation theory, portrayals of professors were analyzed in 15 episodes across three television programs. The content analysis employed both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Personality categories for the quantitative portion were adapted from …
Student Search And Seizure Since Tlo, Darryl Craig Wyatt
Student Search And Seizure Since Tlo, Darryl Craig Wyatt
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
When students in public schools are searched or seized by school officials for any reason, it can sometimes be a violation of the their Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures. Two United States Supreme Court decisions---New Jersey v. T.L.O., 469 U.S. 325 (1985), and Vernonia v. Acton, 515 U.S. 646 (1995), have addressed student searches. T.L.O. dealt with the search of a student's purse after she was caught breaking a school rule, smoking in the bathroom. Vernonia established ground rules for dealing with drug-testing policies in the school environment. In both cases the Supreme Court …
Alienation From School Among Aboriginal Students, Jan Gray, Quentin Beresford
Alienation From School Among Aboriginal Students, Jan Gray, Quentin Beresford
Research outputs pre 2011
It is difficult to overstate the depth of the educational disadvantage which continues to be experienced by Aboriginal young people in the Swan District. While encouraging signs can be found in the genuinely positive attitudes towards school among many of the Aboriginal students who are regular attenders, it is still the case that considerable differences in educational outcomes between Aborigines and non-Aborigines remain.
For example:
• Only one of the students interviewed was found to be undertaking a full Tertiary Entrance Examination course in the district during the Year 2000.
• Few students (especially boys) remain at school to study …
