Equal Employment Opportunity And Affirmative Action In Humboldt County Federal Contracting Private Sector Industries, Peter J. C. Veenhuyzen

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In the field of Sociology, studies are continually initiated to ascertain basic social processes integral to an area under research. As these processes are isolated and identified, their function can be understood and related to a larger social spectrum. In the field of personnel management, the predominant quest has been to screen applicants for their desirability as future employees. Some of the criteria used are: 1) amount of experience in the area of the job opening; 2) quantity of formal education in the given area; 3) past job performance recommendations; 4) amount of previous job absenteeism; 5) ability to handle …

The Czech Immigrant - A Process Of Acculturation: Schuyler, Nebraska, 1870-1920, Janet Varejcka

Student Work

Oscar Handlin wrote, "Once I thought to write a history of the immigrants in America. Then I discovered that the immigrants were American history." Yet, how strange that so many people are reluctant to be referred to as Irish, Polish, German, or Swedish. Their wish is to be called an American. The heritage their parents or grandparents left behind has often been ignored. I did not fully understand the traditions of my Czechoslovak heritage even though I grew up with a foreign language and hints of a different culture. In a time of resurgent interest in the ethnic dimensions of …

Shoshoni Conceptualizations Of Plant Relationships, Bryan Ray Spykerman May 1977

Shoshoni Conceptualizations Of Plant Relationships, Bryan Ray Spykerman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Interviews were conducted with 10 Shoshoni-speaking people to investigate conceptualizations of plant relationships. A card-sort technique and informal questioning were employed in an attempt to elicit plant classifications and taxonomic relationships. Results indicate classifications are based on multiple criteria including morphology, cultural utilization, geographic setting and growth habit. A paradigm which postulates conceptualizations based on prototypic images fits the data better than the supposition that memory is composed of extensive taxonomic structures.

The Social Thought Of Clarence Edwin Ayres, Henry M. Gregory

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the thesis of this study, that although Ayres’s theory of progress is damaging to his sociological theory as a whole, his theory of the basic dichotomy of social action, that of technology and ceremonialism, deserves greater credit than it has received and is profoundly significant sociologically.

Concepts Of Class And Stratification: Essays On Max Weber, Talcott Parsons And Karl Marx, Lynn Susan Levine Jan 1976

Concepts Of Class And Stratification: Essays On Max Weber, Talcott Parsons And Karl Marx, Lynn Susan Levine

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The division of society into classes and the determination of social life according to the exigencies of this division has provided, since the middle of the nineteenth century, the basis for the whole of the self-conception of Marxist social science. Class as an historical presupposition, as a “sociological datum,” etc., provides not only the ultimate subject matter of the Marxian social sciences but the basis for a methodological critique of the social sciences as a whole. To this extent the concept of class has been simultaneously excluded from any systematic conceptual derivation and considered the necessary logical basis for all …
