Sicker Americans Are More Likely To Misuse Prescription Medications, Esther Oshaji, Andrew S. London
Population Health Research Brief Series
Prescription medication misuse is a long-term population health problem in the United States. This data slice uses data from the National Wellbeing Survey (N=32,789, 2021–2025) of U.S. adults ages 18–64 to examine how the number of chronic health conditions a person has is related to their misuse of prescription opioids, tranquilizers, sedatives, or stimulants in the past 12 months. The authors find a dose-response pattern: misuse rises from 2.8% among those with no chronic conditions to 11.7% among those with three or more conditions. Mental health conditions show stronger associations with misuse than physical health conditions.

Filling The Knowledge Gap: The National Automobile Theft Bureau And The Rise Of Private Intelligence, 1912–1941, William Murray
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the Automobile Protective and Information Bureau (APIB) and its successor, the National Automobile Theft Bureau (NATB), situating these institutions within the development of corporate intelligence in the United States. The rapid expansion of automobile ownership produced a form of crime defined by technological advancement and jurisdictional fragmentation that existing law enforcement could not effectively address. In response, automobile insurance companies created the APIB as a centralized clearinghouse for theft intelligence. By standardizing reporting, maintaining national records, and distributing investigative information, the Bureau developed an early private intelligence infrastructure that supported law enforcement. The limitations of local enforcement …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This qualitative study examines factors facilitating women’s election to District Assemblies in Ghana through social capital and supply–demand theoretical frameworks. Through interviews with thirteen female Assembly members and four officials, the research identifies four critical enablers: financial resources, political affiliations, community relationships, and educational qualifications. Financial resources emerged as crucial for campaign management and voter mobilization, while political party support provided strategic advantages despite the nonpartisan nature of local elections. Strong interpersonal relationships within communities proved vital for building voter trust, and educational background enhanced candidates’ credibility. The findings inform recommendations for implementing gender quotas, establishing campaign funding mechanisms, voter …

Beyond The Prompt: Coding The Magis In The Age Of Ai, Vanessa Rotondo
Beyond The Prompt: Coding The Magis In The Age Of Ai, Vanessa Rotondo
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
As a scholar-practitioner in Jesuit higher education, I’ve witnessed how generative AI is not merely a tool students use—it’s a formative force that shapes how they reflect, imagine, and even pray. Drawing on the Catholic imagination, Ignatian pedagogy, and sociological frameworks like liquid modernity, I argue that Jesuit institutions must respond not just technologically and reactively, but actively anticipate methods of integrating AI both theologically and pedagogically. I introduce the concept of Imaginative Intelligence as a formative goal—an embodied, sacramental way of knowing that invites depth, wonder, and resistance to automation. This is not a call to reject AI, but …

Ignatian Pedagogy For Engaged, Reflective, And Inclusive Learning: New Insights On A Treasured Tradition, Jennifer Tilghman-Havens, Jennifer Loertscher, David Green, Kerry S. Von Esch
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Ignatian pedagogy is the philosophy and methodology for teaching and learning that evolved from the wisdom accumulated from 500 years of Jesuit education. The Ignatian approach views education as a collaborative process that transforms students and teachers, preparing them for moral and ethical action in the world. While the core values of Jesuit education have remained constant, the changing demographics within our Jesuit communities and among the faculty and staff of our institutions offer an opportunity to celebrate its many intersections with peer-reviewed research on effective pedagogical approaches that center students and foster justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. In this …

“Cool People Doing Good Work”: A Rights-Based, Relational Model For Research, Teaching, And Outreach Rooted In Urban Settings, Saúl López, Gabriel Velez, Melissa Gibson, Robert Smith
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Urban Catholic institutions of higher education are being challenged to do more when it comes to working with communities that surround them at the same time as they face multiple external pressure and must clearly define the value of their mission. In this article, we present a model for community-engaged practices that emerge from the ground up to move these institutions more in line with Catholic Social Teaching. “Cool People Doing Good Work” is an adaptable model centered around relationship building and authentic engagement with local experts, stakeholders, and community members that then builds to institutional change. This model places …

In Vietnam, the National Housing Development Strategy for the period of 2021 - 2030 with a vision to 2045 has affirmed that social housing is one of the important contents of economic development policy. The situation of social housing development in the past 15 years has shown some initial positive results in building new systems of concepts and awareness on the importance of social housing, the legal framework, in addition to policies for the implementation and development of social housing, as well as the implementation of several social housing programs for specific target groups of people. However, the achievements are …

This study evaluates the current conditions and proposes urban landscape regeneration solutions for Hung Vuong Street in Da Nang City, with a focus on pedestrian-oriented development. The street currently faces critical challenges, including deteriorating infrastructure, sidewalk encroachment, and a lack of public amenities, all of which negatively affect the urban experience. The research combines segmented field observations with a sociological survey of 239 valid respondents. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS through reliability testing (Cronbach’s Alpha), exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and linear regression models. The results indicate that the factor groups “Satisfaction with traffic, landscape, and sanitation” and “Street space …

(Re)Shaping The Path Of Rural Tourism In Central Vietnam: When Traditionalism As A Driver For Architectural Multiformity, Tung Minh Tran, Chau Thi Bao Huynh
CIB Conferences
Rural tourism in Central Vietnam faces tension between infrastructure modernization and the preservation of vernacular architectural identity. This paper examines the (re)configuration of rural tourism by conceptualizing traditionalism as a driver for architectural multiformity rather than a static constraint. Through a multiple-case study of six representative villages and 23 semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders, the study identifies (neo-)vernacular practices and strategies for integrating local materials into contemporary hospitality typologies. Findings demonstrate that a tradition-centric approach supports hybrid morphologies that balance heritage conservation with economic needs. The paper concludes that traditionalism provides a resilient framework for shaping sustainable, locally grounded tourism …

Linking Project Information Management To Construction Project Success In Digitalised Environments, Quang-Phuong Luu, Quan T. Nguyen, Eric Lou
CIB Conferences
The increasing digitalisation of construction projects has transformed how information is produced, stored, and exchanged. Yet despite widespread adoption of digital platforms and standards, many projects continue to experience coordination failures, safety issues, and weak organisational learning, suggesting that information availability alone does not guarantee improved outcomes. This paper examines how Project Information Management (PrIM) influences project success in digitalised environments, moving beyond traditional delivery-focused criteria. Using a structured literature-based synthesis of 27 journal articles combined with a mechanism mapping approach, it develops a mechanism-based explanation of how PrIM bridges digital infrastructure and project success through organisational processes. The analysis …

Northern Vietnamese Catholic Churches In A Contemporary Context: From Religious Space To Community Space, Van Vu Nguyen, Viet Huy Nguyen
CIB Conferences
In the context of contemporary Vietnamese society, religious buildings not only serve a religious function and role but are also increasingly involved in community life and the architectural and landscape spaces of urban and rural areas. Catholic churches in Northern Vietnam are a typical example, clearly reflecting the process of integration and development in the face of socio-economic, cultural, and construction technology changes. This article focuses on analyzing the transformation of church architecture in this region during the contemporary period, through aspects such as spatial organization, architectural form, construction materials and technology, and the relationship with the local landscape and …

Impact Of Organizational Stressors On Stress Among Foreign Construction Workers From Nepal, Khursheed Ahmed, Mei-Yung Leung, Wenqian Yang
CIB Conferences
The construction industry in developed regions relies heavily on foreign labour. Working in a new environment exposes these workers to unique organizational stressors that can deteriorate their well-being. Specifically, Nepalese Construction Workers (NCWs) face distinct challenges that may lead to severe physical and psychological stress. This study, therefore, aims to identify the critical organizational stressors and their impact on the stress of NCWs. Based on a conceptual model, a questionnaire survey was adopted to collect data from NCWs. In order to investigate the relationships among stressors (i.e., ethnic barriers, lack of acceptance, insufficient authority, low reward, and unfair treatment) and …

Impediments To The Growth Of Trained Local Construction Contractors In Developing Economies, Richard Ndhlovu, Innocent Musonda, Adetayo Onososen
CIB Conferences
The construction industry in developing economies remains a vital sector for sustainable infrastructure development; however, it is often dominated by foreign enterprises. This study identifies systemic obstacles in contractor growth. The study adopted a qualitative approach. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews held with purposively selected twelve (12) industrial experts in the construction sector, with contractors being the key interviewees. After conducting a thematic analysis of responses, six key factors were identified: financial indiscipline, the high cost of borrowing, erratic and delayed payments by clients, inadequate assurance of work opportunities, insufficient collateral to borrow from lending institutions, and insufficient construction …

Stakeholder Perspectives On Local Contractor Capacity Development Initiatives In Zambia, Richard Ndhlovu, Innocent Musonda, Adetayo Onososen
CIB Conferences
Strengthening the capabilities of indigenous contractors is crucial for sustainable economic growth and reducing dependence on imported expertise in developing countries. This study analyses stakeholder perspectives on improving contractor capacity and identifies the systemic barriers that lead to higher failure rates. This study employed a qualitative methodology, utilizing semi-structured interviews to gather data from eighteen (18) industrial specialists purposefully selected from contractors, consultants, clients, and funding organizations. Significant findings indicate nine principal themes extracted from interview replies. The study highlights that achieving a holistic training design requires multidimensional delivery to produce a structured learning environment that enhances skill acquisition. The …

Spotting Power: Reframing Media Literacy In Civic Education, Kason Kendall
Spotting Power: Reframing Media Literacy In Civic Education, Kason Kendall
Democracy & Education
This article analyzes and critiques the tendency to frame media literacy as a neutral skill set concentrated on verifying sources, or "spotting the error." While this approach emphasizes cognitive habits of checking for bias and accuracy, it does not adequately prepare students to understand intentional misinformation as a political strategy. Building on Matthew's (2020) response to Curry and Cherner (2019), I propose that limiting media literacy to error correction hides the strategic production and intentional spread of disinformation by powerful organizations, corporations, and media outlets. Rooted in curriculum theory and the work of scholars such as Gramsci, Hall, Habermas, and …
