How Stressful Will Counseling Be? Appraisals Of Control And Challenge Predict Help-Seeking Intentions, Rachael Namboodiri
How Stressful Will Counseling Be? Appraisals Of Control And Challenge Predict Help-Seeking Intentions, Rachael Namboodiri
Psychology
A. Purpose Mental health counseling is an effective treatment for mental health concerns (APA, 2012), though psychological barriers prevent people from seeking out counseling when distressed (Corrigan, 2004). Self-stigma, or an individual’s fear that seeking help would lead to diminished self-worth, is one commonly cited psychological barrier leading to lower help-seeking intent (Lannin et. al. 2015). One untested barrier is whether individuals believe they would be able to cope with potential stress created by attending and participating in counseling (cf. stress appraisal theory; Peacock & Wong, 1990). Therefore, this study attempts to address this gap in the literature by testing …
Avoidant, But Ready To Change? Facilitating Help-Seeking For Avoidant Help-Seekers, Madison Maciejewski
Avoidant, But Ready To Change? Facilitating Help-Seeking For Avoidant Help-Seekers, Madison Maciejewski
Psychology
The present study found that autonomous and avoidant help-seeking styles demonstrate opposing relations with positive help-seeking beliefs. Readiness to change may buffer the negative effect of an avoidant help-seeking style on beliefs about professional help. Bolstering readiness to change may facilitate help-seeking for resistant individuals.
Cultural Differences Or Political Differences? Flipping Over The Hofstede's 6-D Model Of Culture In Terms Of Conservatism And Political Views, Han Jung
Psychology
Hofstede’s 6-D model of culture is one of the most widespread taxonomies regarding the cultural differences across the countries, but it has also faced many fierce antagonists. Most criticisms of the Hofstede model include identification of nations and cultures, superficial and narrow theoretical backgrounds, and suggestions of rival hypotheses. Especially, there is some evidence that suggests that the allegedly cultural differences may actually stem from political backgrounds or people’s traits related to their political circumstances; Therefore, I expect that most of Hofstede’s dimensions are associated with political traits of people and most national differences in Hofstede’s dimensions will disappear if …
Hopefulness: Explaining The Link Between Self-Affirmation And Self-Esteem, Stephanie Ivanoff, Taylor Ullrich
Hopefulness: Explaining The Link Between Self-Affirmation And Self-Esteem, Stephanie Ivanoff, Taylor Ullrich
Psychology
Problem or Major Purpose: The present study examines the association among self-affirmation, hope, and self-esteem. Self-affirmation is a process that involves compensating for threatened domains of one’s self-worth (e.g., feeling unintelligent after failing a test) by being reminded of positive aspects of one’s identity that are not threatened (e.g., feeling positive about being a loving sister); the tendency to self-affirm has been linked to decreased perceptions of threat, and thus may increase faith in one’s ability to achieve positive outcomes (i.e., hope) and ultimately bolster self-esteem (Sherman & Cohen, 2006; Tesser, 2000). Given that hope has been linked to accomplishing …
Strategies For At-Risk Youth Achieving And Avoiding Distal Goals, Keeley Hynes
Strategies For At-Risk Youth Achieving And Avoiding Distal Goals, Keeley Hynes
Psychology
Long-term planning may be beneficial for vulnerable youth, as goal-setting in therapy has been shown to be effective in helping prevent psychological distress and improve retention in therapy (Cairns., Kavanagh, Dark, & McPhail, 2019). In adolescence, the prefrontal cortex is not fully developed, and adolescents’ decision-making capabilities are more susceptible to stress than adults (Tottenham, & Galván, 2016). This finding may be particularly important for low income youth who may experience more stressful life events than adolescents from higher income homes (Reynolds, O'Koon, Papademetriou, Szczygiel, & Grant, 2001). Therefore, in an effort to better inform intervention services and supports, the …
Parent And Teacher Perceptions Of Sel In The Schools, Heather Calkins
Parent And Teacher Perceptions Of Sel In The Schools, Heather Calkins
Psychology
This thesis presents a research project that examined the differences between parent and teacher perceptions of social-emotional learning (SEL) in the schools. This project also examined how parents and teachers rank social-emotional goals with respect to academic goals for their children. Results indicate that teachers rate the importance of SEL more highly compared to parents; however, there was no difference in how parents and teachers ranked the items overall. Qualitative analyses revealed differences in the reasoning for parent and teacher support for SEL in the schools as well as concerns for the inclusion of SEL. Future research should further investigate …
Loneliness: Explaining The Link Between Social Media Rumination And Psychological Distress, Marissa Berens, Keeley Hynes
Loneliness: Explaining The Link Between Social Media Rumination And Psychological Distress, Marissa Berens, Keeley Hynes
Psychology
The present study found that among at-risk youth in a relationship education program, the relationship between social media rumination and psychological distress is mediated by loneliness. This suggests that more social media rumination affects psychological distress because of its link to loneliness. Implications for educational interventions for at-risk youth will be discussed.
Parental Problem Drinking And Adolescent Substance Use: The Moderating Role Of Sibling Relationships, Ashley Adams, Sara Kurbyun
Parental Problem Drinking And Adolescent Substance Use: The Moderating Role Of Sibling Relationships, Ashley Adams, Sara Kurbyun
Psychology
Families are complex systems with each member influencing all others (Cox & Paley, 1997). Family factors like parental problem drinking have been consistently shown to predict a range of adverse adolescent adjustment outcomes, including alcohol and other substance use (Caspi et al., 2018; Park & Schepp, 2014). However, other family factors, such as sibling relationships, may serve as protective or additive risk factors in influencing adolescent behavior. Limited extant research has investigated the role of sibling relationship characteristics in the context of parental problem drinking (Rueter et al., 2015).Therefore, the current study examined if hostility and warmth in sibling relationships …

Do Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation Encourage Different Facets Of Hope?, Hailie Halverson, Kailey Green
Psychology
The present study examined the association among intrinsic and extrinsic life goals and different aspects of hope. Results indicated that the type of motivation that adolescents are oriented toward influences the type of hope they experience. Bolstering intrinsic motivation may be an important consideration for practitioners who work with youth.
Mindfulness And Food Selfies: A Naturalistic Investigation Of Healthy Eating, Alishea Hight, Mariah Isbell
Mindfulness And Food Selfies: A Naturalistic Investigation Of Healthy Eating, Alishea Hight, Mariah Isbell
Georgia College Student Research Events
Mindfulness is increasingly linked to effective self-regulation including regulation of health behaviors. Eating is an important behavior for health, and mindfulness has been linked to healthier eating choices in self-report, cross-sectional studies, and in laboratory eating paradigms (e.g., Jordan et al., 2014). In contrast, impulsivity is linked to poor self-regulation such as purchasing behavior (Baumeister, 2002), and impulsivity scores have been shown to be related to weight (Price, Lee, & Higgs, 2013). Along these lines, we sought to examine the links between trait mindfulness and impulsivity and eating behaviors. However, instead of examining eating behaviors through global self-report or forced …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this research is to determine how people evaluate native advertising in order to figure out how ethical is a native advertising practice. The Third Person Effect Theory was applied to this study. It enables to examine people’s attitude toward native advertising. An experimental design was developed. Participants were exposed to three types of ads to find out if they are able to recognize native ads among other advertisements. The total number of participants was 386. The results were analyzed via ANOVA. The main finding of this study states that individuals perceive the native advertisement in a …
A Case Study Of Barriers To Dental Care In Nebraska, Kaitlin Buhler
A Case Study Of Barriers To Dental Care In Nebraska, Kaitlin Buhler
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
An important aspect of overall health is access to dental care, which is, unfortunately, oftentimes difficult to obtain. This study used data collected from a case study of three registered dentists in Nebraska to investigate the barriers to dental care, and identified the lack of dental insurance, limited access to free or reduced-price dental care, and dental anxiety as perceived barriers to dental care. Factors that did not seem to have an impact were language or ethnicity differences between patients and workers, distance to travel, comfortability with receiving free or reduced-price dental care, knowledge of how often to visit the …

Husker To Husker Nightline: A Peer-Run Warm Line Texting Service Development At University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Audrey Wilhelm
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
A desire to develop a service where students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) could reach out to their fellow students in search of improving their mental health and well-being laid the groundwork for this project. After reviewing various ideas, a peer-run warm line service best matched the goals of the project. After completing preliminary research, costs and benefits of warm lines were compared to determine the operations and best practices for warm line services. Obtaining funding for the development of this service was another main focus because funding is required for this idea to become a reality. Consequently, this …
Minority Stress Among Gay And Bisexual Men In Agricultural Occupations, Michael C. Parent, Garrett M. Steede
Minority Stress Among Gay And Bisexual Men In Agricultural Occupations, Michael C. Parent, Garrett M. Steede
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Research integrating the minority stress model and vocational behavior has used broad samples of sexual minority persons. Specific work contexts, particularly traditionally masculine work contexts, may be relevant areas to the integration of minority stress theory and vocational well-being. This study examined the relationship between workplace heterosexism and job satisfaction, as moderated by identity management and person-organization fit, among a sample of 114 sexual minority men, employed in agriculture, recruited from an online social network group. Contrary to prior research, integrating identity management did not moderate the relationship between workplace heterosexism and job satisfaction. Person-organization fit did moderate this relationship, …

Similarities Between The Second Generation Of Female Psychologists And Female Students In Cal Poly’S Child Development Program, Jenny Delk
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This essay aims to uncover the similarities between female students in Cal Poly’s Psychology and Child Development Department and the second generation of female psychologists in American society. The department’s history will be examined in order to establish its importance at Cal Poly, a traditionally vocational institution. Additionally, this essay will consider how female students in the department argued its importance and validity through on campus advocacy and their senior projects. The essay will close with a section detailing faculty perspectives on the validity of psychology and child development as a true science amongst other disciplines at Cal Poly. The …

Understanding The Relationship Between Child Internalizing Problems And Familial Cohesion Following Child Sexual Abuse: The Moderating Role Of Caregiver Abuse History, Erika Boohar
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Due to the heterogeneous nature of symptoms in survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA), extensive research is needed to understand the complexity and further improve intervention practices. This study examined the relationship between risk and outcome factors, specifically caregiver history of emotional abuse and youths’ internalizing problems, and their influence on familial cohesion following CSA. Using a moderation model, it was hypothesized increased child internalizing problems would be related to decreased family cohesion when caregivers have an extensive history of emotional abuse. Participants were 215 non-offending caregivers of sexually abused children attending Project SAFE (Sexual Abuse Family Education), a 12-week …
“My Name Is My Identity”: Understanding Conceptualizations Of Gender Identity To Improve Measurement, Sage Volk
“My Name Is My Identity”: Understanding Conceptualizations Of Gender Identity To Improve Measurement, Sage Volk
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Existing measures of gender identity have some inconsistencies that lead to researchers missing out on the comprehensive image of an individual’s gender. The purpose of the present study was to assess how individuals who do not identify with the gender assigned to them at birth conceptualize their gender identity. To understand which aspects are important to an individual’s gender identity, semi-structured interviews were conducted with four undergraduate students who identified as non-cisgender (e.g., transgender, non-binary, genderqueer, etc.). Results of the qualitative analysis identified two themes within conceptualizations of gender identity: (1) personal and (2) social. The importance of these …
