Reading Texts, Reading Traditions: African Masks And American Law, James Boyd White
Reading Texts, Reading Traditions: African Masks And American Law, James Boyd White
Articles
My subject in this Essay is the relation between a text or other artifact and the tradition against which it acts. I want to begin by borrowing from a book that seems to me to represent a model-not the only model, of course, but a very good one-of a certain kind of cultural investigation. The book is Inventing Masks by Z.S. Strother, an art historian at Columbia University who specializes in African art. Its material subject is a set of face masks made by the Central Pende, an African people in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Theses and Dissertations
Dinner For One, a hypermedia poetry thesis, explores the themes of aloneness, sexuality, independence, and journeys of discovery and distance. The Chinese zodiac stamps used as navigational elements in Dinner for One and the prose poems written as postcards to oneself an others reinforce the notion of travel. The fortunes from Chinese cookies give prophecies and horoscopes, reminding us of our fate, which is beyond our conrol. Dinner For One means to question, through poetry and interactive, hypertextual reading techniques, how much faith and trust we should hold in influences outside of our lives. The poems in this thesis are …

Poetry As Theory: Lope De Vega's Epistola As Arbiter Of Proper Discourse, Mark J. Mascia
Poetry As Theory: Lope De Vega's Epistola As Arbiter Of Proper Discourse, Mark J. Mascia
Languages Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article is to examine the ways in which Lope de Vega manipulates epistolas to serve his own ends with regards to language, both on a narrowly literary level and on a broader personal and even national one. What emerges is an epistola which blends both the self-evident art of poetry writing and critical speculation upon it, one which Lope consciously uses as a literary mode of vindication and defense for his ideas regarding proper discourse and as an attack on any type of discourse of which he disapproves.
Honoring Everyday Alimentation: The Case Of Pablo Neruda's Odas Elementales And Food, Mark J. Mascia
Honoring Everyday Alimentation: The Case Of Pablo Neruda's Odas Elementales And Food, Mark J. Mascia
Languages Faculty Publications
This article examines the ways in which Neruda poeticizes and celebrates different foodstuffs in his Odas Elementales, and connects these ways to the larger themes present in his general corpus of work. These odes, which ennoble and glorify everyday food and drink items, are treated as animate, living entities, and are at times frequently linked to a political or social cause as well.
