Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
There are many uses for poetry: an expression of emotion, an experiment in language, a political act, or a work of art. Poetry also comes in many forms, from a 3- line haiku to a book-length epic. But all poetry is about using language in a unique way-it says things that cannot be said in prose or speech. The exercises below help poets to stimulate their imaginations, sharpen their tools and stretch their limits. You'll also find verses from poets that roughly correspond to the exercises-let them inspire you!

Geraldo is a story about what an immigrant undergoes when he leaves one culture and tries to 'join' another culture. An immigrant suffers a triple disruption: he loses his sense of place, he enters into an alien language, and he finds himself surrounded by beings whose social behavior, norms and traditions are very unlike, and sometimes even offensive to his own. The explanation of the leading ideas in this manual help students and teachers explore the philosophical themes in Geraldo. The discussion plans, exercises, and activities are designed to foster and cultivate the process of philosophical dialogue in the classroom.

Swenson Poetry Award Winners
May Swenson Poetry Award Volume 4, with foreward by Maxine Kumin. Although the poems in this collection are not narrative, they do present a narrative, gradually unspooling the tale of the poet's rebel aunt, who left the family "to marry a Chinaman" in the 1930s. It's an old story, full of poignancy, mystery, family pride, and doubt. When the aunt returns to die, the poet, now grown, discovers in herself the need to reclaim the connections that her family had severed. She travels to China several times—to learn. Gradually, through wide-eyed insightful poems, we see the poet rebuild with her …
