Sanctum Drag Featuring St. Joseph As A Structural Vulnerability, Phillip Gregory Spotswood
Sanctum Drag Featuring St. Joseph As A Structural Vulnerability, Phillip Gregory Spotswood
LSU Master's Theses
Sanctum Drag is a hybrid work that gnaws at the boundaries of personal and public, performative and lived. Within, St. Joseph, as the patriarch of the Catholic Church, is dismantled through a series of elegies, maps, and plays. Throughout, the characters and speakers are auditioning and experimenting towards new means of reproduction, outside of the logic of heteronormativity and marriage. Like the various characters, the form of the text is always shifting, always searching its own edges. The mutating forms create a call-and-response, one form taking up where another form fails. Failure, then, becomes a crucial practice for the speakers …

Miss Muffet, Or What Came After, Nicole Clark
Miss Muffet, Or What Came After, Nicole Clark
Children's Book and Media Review
Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey; along came a spider, who sat down beside her, and frightened Miss Muffet away. That’s not the end of the story, though, as Miss Muffet, or What Came After reveals! As it turns out, the spider didn’t scare Miss Muffet, but instead befriended her and joined her in an adventurous escapade across the countryside. The pair meet Little Bo Peep (whose true story is also a bit more involved than her nursery rhyme suggests), stop a theft, and eventually end up as performers at the king’s castle.
Love That Dog, Nicole Clark
Love That Dog, Nicole Clark
Children's Book and Media Review
Jack, a young student in Mrs. Stretchberry’s class, is sure that he doesn’t like poetry. He doesn’t understand any of the poems he reads in class, and he is convinced that poetry is only for girls. Through his teacher’s gentle persistence, Jack begins to see his own life experiences in the poems he reads— and develops his own identity as a poet. This gradual change culminates in a visit with one of Jack’s newfound-favorite poets: Walter Dean Myers.
Papa Is A Poet: A Story About Robert Frost, Nicole Clark
Papa Is A Poet: A Story About Robert Frost, Nicole Clark
Children's Book and Media Review
Told from the point of view of his young daughter Leslie, Papa is a Poet provides a brief and lyrical snapshot of the life and personage of Robert Frost. Lines taken from Frost’s poetry are seamlessly woven into the narrative to tell the story of the family’s life on their New Hampshire farm, their move to England, and the first publishing of a book of Frost’s poetry upon their return to the United States. The detail with which their day-to-day life is described makes clear how Frost drew on what he saw and experienced all around him to write his …

Feminism In The Works Of Fawziyya Abū Khālid, Muneerah Badr Almahasheer
Feminism In The Works Of Fawziyya Abū Khālid, Muneerah Badr Almahasheer
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Feminism in the Works of Fawziyya Abū Khālid" Muneerah Badr Almahasheer examines how the Saudi poet Fawziyya Abū Khālid (1955–present) addresses feminism in her poems. Although distinct, Islam is frequently conflated with Arabic culture; consequently, women's role in Islam is commonly misunderstood. Therefore, following Western feminists, Muslim feminists have called for readings and understandings of the Qur'an, wherein the authority of the historically patriarchal interpretations is not assumed, and the sanctity of the text is valued. Through this lens, Abū Khālid's poems critically interrogate Arabic Muslim identity, particularly with regard to gender. A selected reading of Abū …
