Exile In The Gramola: A Jewinican (Re)Collection, Roberto Alejandro Santos Jan 2010

Exile In The Gramola: A Jewinican (Re)Collection, Roberto Alejandro Santos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Exile in the Gramola: A Jewinican (Re)Collection is a poetic attempt at navigating the multicultural landscapes of the ethnic hybrid. It is a collection of poetry that aims to reveal how we ourselves become acculturated in the process acculturating others, and which also aims at promoting opportunities of cross-cultural dialogue, cross-cultural negotiation, cross-cultural overstanding, and cross-cultural endorsement.

Through the themes of exile, divorce, familial separation, and the mixing of the cultural movements of hip-hop and bachata, Exile reaches beyond ideas of ethnicity and cultural norms in order to reveal the hardships we share in our only commonality--our humanity.

The Illumination Of E. E. Cummings' Poetry In J. A. C. Redford's "Love Is The Every Only God", Amy Louise Aucoin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The choral work love is the every only god, composed by J. A. C. Redford, was published in 2001, placing it among the initial choral concert works published in the twenty-first century. love is the every only god is a song cycle for divisi mixed chorus with piano accompaniment based on six poems by E. E. Cummings. The work is organized into six movements with two interludes and lasts approximately twenty-five minutes. Beyond his regard for the art of poetry and care in choosing a text, Redford sees himself as an illuminator of the text, providing the listener with a …

The Tragedy Of Nigel Rain, Jason W. Dockery Nov 2009

The Tragedy Of Nigel Rain, Jason W. Dockery

Theses

This work is a two-part collection of poems examining creative loss and gain and human dysfunction. The first part details the struggles of Nigel Rain, a persona born through an artist’s pen who finds himself abandoned by his creator. Nigel believes himself saved through the perpetuation of desire, and these poems show Nigel’s attempts at redefining his purpose in life by projecting his fortunes upon a woman he believes to be an embodiment of the Tarot card of helpful fortunes, the Star. Nigel’s tragedy is his failure to realize and ultimately survive the fragility of human connections. Language proves as …

En esta tesis se presenta una coleccion de veintiseis poemas de mi autoria que tienen como base una tematica lesbica. En estos se abarcan subtemas como la sensualidad femenina, el amor, y el desamor. The Animal Coming Together, Rodney Gomez Aug 2009

The Animal Coming Together, Rodney Gomez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This project is an ekphrastic collection of poems. The term 'ekphrasis' is usually used to refer to texts that respond to or are influenced by particular works of visual art, but it can sometimes be used to refer to texts that respond to non-visual art as well, such as musical compositions. I take the more inclusive approach to ekphrasis: most of the poems in this collection are based on paintings, but several are based on photos, films, sculpture, multimedia works, musical compositions, and art generally. Most of the poems are based on Chican@ and Latin American art. The collection is …

Framing Masculinity In The Poetry Of Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Margaret Garry Burke May 2009

Framing Masculinity In The Poetry Of Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Margaret Garry Burke

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper examines how the contemporary Irish poet, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, is destabilizing traditional notions of the masculine and feminine. Female Irish writers have been suppressed and silenced by a strong patriarchal society and it is interesting to study how Ni Dhomhnaill uses vivid masculine imagery to delineate new boundaries within the institutionalized male/female construction. The two works that I explore, “Nude” and “A God Shows Up,” represent her complex journey toward a strong feminine voice.

Flaming Red Wig, Carla Christina Howl Jan 2009

Flaming Red Wig, Carla Christina Howl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Flaming Red Wig" is a collection of short stories and prose poems with a critical preface. Both the preface and the creative work explore notions of artifice, apposition and entering into a text (both written and character) with stillness or intrusion. I try to create an examination and communion with language on much the same level, ultimately yielding a musicality that creates a rhythmic discourse and dynamic between the significance and the notion. The title of my thesis refers to the obvious motif of artifice and the reoccurring theme of emotional pain attached to gender and humanistic role within specific …

Hello Kitty Goes To College: Poems About Harassment In The Academy, Sandra L. Faulkner, Bernadette Marie Calafell, Diane Susan Grimes Jan 2009

Hello Kitty Goes To College: Poems About Harassment In The Academy, Sandra L. Faulkner, Bernadette Marie Calafell, Diane Susan Grimes

Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Faculty Scholarship

This essay presents a series of poems that fictionalize professors’ and students’ experiences and narratives of sexual harassment in the academy through the use of the cartoon character, Hello Kitty. The poems demonstrate administrative and fellow professors’ reactions to the standpoints of women of color, untenured professors, and students that experience harassment. The essay argues that a fictional account is necessary to represent these experiences given the academy’s prevalent power structure. The use of feminist and critical race theory places the poems in the context of the harassment literature and demonstrates how reactions to the presentation of standpoints are an …

Film-Poetry Synthesis And The Birth Of Experimental Cinema In France, Scott Ross Jan 2009

Film-Poetry Synthesis And The Birth Of Experimental Cinema In France, Scott Ross

Theses & ETDs

French poet Guillaume Apollinaire’s 1917 lecture “L’Esprit nouveau et les poètes” announced the beginning of the Parisian poets’ sincere engagement with cinema: in the following decade, the French literary community became increasingly involved in the development of film theory and criticism, and France’s young generation of experimental filmmakers began to consider modern poetry as a potential inspiration for their work. Some theorists and filmmakers even proposed the widely interpreted concept of a cinépoème: a cinematic poem. This thesis examines the presence and influence of French poetry in three such cinépoèmes made in the late 1920s. In Emak-Bakia, Man Ray employs …

Light Suite, Jessica Fiorini Dec 2008

Light Suite, Jessica Fiorini

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Light Suite is a collection of the work I produced during my enrollment in the University of New Orleans Low Residency M.F.A. program. The writing, format and length styles reflect my experimentation with my craft. It also provides insight as to what my "poetic voice" is. Light Suite attempts to entwine personal experience with engaged observation and occasional flights of fantasy. The following poems illustrate my attempt at diversifying personal, poetic style. There are travel, prose, and accidental meaning poems. There are poems that feature personal narrative and collaboration. All of my works do share one characteristic and that is …

Effects Of Online, Collaborative Discourse On Secondary Student Writing: A Case Study Of The History And Ecology Of An Electronic Exchange, Julie Henderson Rucker

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Technological environments where teens spend much of their time after school are environments that educators seldom use in classroom instruction. These Web 2.0 environments are participatory, collaborative environments where teens share music, files, pictures, and ideas and are influenced by the information shared by others within their Web 2.0 environments. This study looks at a particular online environment, the Bread Loaf Teacher Network, and how secondary student writing is affected by the collaborative nature of electronic exchanges conducted on this online network. This study analyzed the history and ecology of one electronic exchange (a technological, participatory discourse community within the …

Body And The Text/Body Of The Text In Mina Loy’S Songs To Joannes, Lucia Pietroiusti Mar 2008

Body And The Text/Body Of The Text In Mina Loy’S Songs To Joannes, Lucia Pietroiusti

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay advances a close reading of Mina Loy’s Songs to Joannes, a sequence of poems dedicated to her failed relationship with the futurist Giovanni Papini and published in 1917. Through a close analysis of the typographical complexities by which Songs to Joannes is characterized, I attempt to draw explicit connections between Loy’s radical approach to physical existence and sexual activity in the poems, and her equally radical departure from the conventions of poetic form. In the systematic tension between form and content, then, I illuminate the ways in which Loy’s poetry redefines the familiar concept of the ‘body …

Corinna A-Maying The Apocalypse, Darcie Dennigan Feb 2008

Corinna A-Maying The Apocalypse, Darcie Dennigan

Poetry

Corinna, A-Maying the Apocalypse simultaneously celebrates and laments that “we are but decaying.” Betraying a love of old poems and symbols and new words and forms, these are poems where “the moon’s spritzing its perfumes and the phlegm is thick and fast” over cities and Starbucks and suburbs. The poet is in love with the rhythm of the man-made world, and “the rhythm is so strong sometimes / it blows up the room.”

'Grung Tell Me Wud': An Introduction To Karl, Daryl Cumber Dance Jan 2008

'Grung Tell Me Wud': An Introduction To Karl, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

Olive Senior informs us in 'The Poem as Gardening, the Story as Su-Su: Finding a Literary Voice' that Jamaican elders believe the ground is the place where ancestral wisdom is located and they will explain and validate their warning or advice by saying, 'Grung tell me wud' (36). Jamaican linguist/literary critic/poet/and novelist Velma Pollard has put her ear to the ground of Jamaica and shared many important words of ancestral wisdom with us. This was a natural development for the talented girlchild born into an artistic family in Woodside, Jamaica, a rural community rich in folk traditions: her father was …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Gypsy Soul, Wolf Spirit is a collection of thirty-six poems; the majority of the poems are written in - or evolved from drafts written in - iambic pentameter. Writing formal poetry was a challenge I decided to embrace because I believed that it would allow me to evolve as a poet.

The themes that connect these poems are represented by the collection's title: Gypsy Soul, Wolf Spirit. There is the dominant thematic presence of both the natural world and the spiritual realm within the collection. My intention was to lift the reader to a state of mind, through language, where …
