'Meaning Strides Through These Poems': Ted Berrigan's The Sonnets And The Poetics Of Sociability, Joshua Martin May 2014

'Meaning Strides Through These Poems': Ted Berrigan's The Sonnets And The Poetics Of Sociability, Joshua Martin

All Theses

In the field of modern/postmodern poetry studies, the Second Generation New York School of poets has been, and continues to be, an undervalued aesthetic movement. Following the now famous First Generation New York School - a literary and artistic coterie containing the likes of Ashbery, O'Hara, and Pollock - the poets of the Second Generation lived, worked, and often died in New York's Lower East Side and, in the process, emulated and altered the aesthetic of the First Generation. This thesis attempts to contextualize the achievements of the Second Generation New York School by focusing on the movement's de facto …

Transylvania, Texas, Joshua Murray May 2014

Transylvania, Texas, Joshua Murray

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis is a collection of poems about my experience realizing that I was transgender, working through my feelings prior to this realization, the moment of realization, and the fallout that comes afterword. It begins by dealing with the feelings of depression and alienation that accompany unrecognized feelings of gender dysphoria, examining feelings of disconnect from the body, the mind, and everyday life. It builds to the slow realization of being a trans woman, a woman taught to be a man by society, and the joy and relief that comes with that epiphany. Finally it looks at what comes afterword, …

Roubaud's Circus: Playing With Words And Animals In Les Animaux De Tout Le Monde, Miranda R. Mueller Jan 2014

Roubaud's Circus: Playing With Words And Animals In Les Animaux De Tout Le Monde, Miranda R. Mueller

Master's Theses

It is commonly held that there is a solid, defined line existing between men and animals. This thesis explores the ideological boundary and, through a close examination of Jacques Roubaud’s collection of poetry Les animaux de tout le monde, imagines the line as a fluid structure that can be broken, approached, and multiplied.

In a circus theme following the playful style of Roubaud’s own verses, I include several close readings of poems as well as an analysis of Roubaud’s influence from Lewis Carroll’s nonsense genre, the Fables of Jean de la Fontaine, and Medieval bestiaries in order to create a …

Performance Dialogues: Conversations In Poetry And Dance, Rebekah Moriah Bray Jan 2014

Performance Dialogues: Conversations In Poetry And Dance, Rebekah Moriah Bray

Theses & ETDs

This thesis was concerned with the problem of identifying a relationship between poetry and dance as performance arts. The first chapter explored historical developments among the arts of poetry, music, and dance to suggest that these areas, though distinct, are also harmonious. The second chapter of this thesis was an exercise in interdisciplinary experimentation through the conception and production of a poetry and dance performance. The final chapter of this thesis argues for the recognition of poetry and dance as languages in dialogue with their audiences. Through the process of researching and writing this thesis I discovered evidence to support …

“No Outside Of Nature”: Investigations Toward An Ecopoetics, Kyla Stevens Jan 2014

“No Outside Of Nature”: Investigations Toward An Ecopoetics, Kyla Stevens

Theses & ETDs

Belonging to no single school or camp, ecopoetics is expansive in its reach, the discipline composing a theoretical diversity that has resulted in a process of engagement with the natural world. It is a sense of between that seems to be the essential tone of ecopoetics; the edges between disciplines, between ecology and poetry, the boundaries between ecosystems and habitats—areas of tension where the edge of science and art, of poetic innovation and ecological thinking, meet. Central to ecopoetics’ address of the between is an intense awareness of location, a writing practice that enables consideration of emplacement, of ‘being located.’ …

A Fusion Of Mediums And Reversing Ekphrasis: Using Photography To Respond To The Poetry Of George Oppen, Taylor Meredith Jan 2014

A Fusion Of Mediums And Reversing Ekphrasis: Using Photography To Respond To The Poetry Of George Oppen, Taylor Meredith

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines and reverses the creative practice of ekphrasis in order to argue for the fusion of artistic mediums. This is done, in part, by responding to the poetry of George Oppen through original photography. By translating Oppen‟s poetry into a series of corresponding photographs, I produce my own examples to support the claim that textual ideas and imagery can be applied to the visual arts. I also support this claim by referencing several well-known writers and visual artists who have employed the use of ekphrasis and created works of art that significantly contributed to major artistic movements. This …

Critique Is Not Enough : The Empirical Imperatives Of Innovative American Poetry, Christopher Rizzo Jan 2014

Critique Is Not Enough : The Empirical Imperatives Of Innovative American Poetry, Christopher Rizzo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Critique is Not Enough: The Empirical Imperatives of Innovative American Poetryproposes that innovative modern and early contemporary American poetries redefine the relation of knowledge, consciousness, and poetic performance to lived experience. This study demonstrates how the radically different poetic projects of Walt Whitman, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and Charles Olson not only equally insist upon empirically investigative poetics, but also endeavor, each to each, to individualize their poetic methodologies, which thus challenges the generalized Enlightenment myth of rationality. In that each of these writers undertakes to redefine the relation of knowledge, consciousness, and poetic performance to lived experience, they also …

Alternative Mappings Of Belonging: Non Son De Aquí By María Do Cebreiro And Rasgado By Lila Zemborain, Mariela Méndez

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

This essay examines the travels of the poetic speakers in two poetry collections: by the Argentinean writer Lila Zemborain, and by the Galician poet and critic María do Cebreiro, to postulate a revision of notions of belonging in its intersection with gender and space. Rasgado (2006) is a sort of poetic diary written by Lila Zemborain, who resides in New York, responding as both insider and outsider to the World Trade Center attacks on 11 September 2001. María do Cebreiro's book, Non son de aquí (2008) similarly follows the path of a nomadic speaker intent on redefining the terms of …

"Dae Scotsmen Dream O 'Lectric Leids?" Robert Crawford's Cyborg Scotland, Alexander Burke Nov 2013

"Dae Scotsmen Dream O 'Lectric Leids?" Robert Crawford's Cyborg Scotland, Alexander Burke

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis applies a Cybernetic interpretation to a selection of poetry by the Scottish Informationist poet Robert Crawford, drawn mostly from two collections: A Scottish Assembly (1990) and Sharawaggi: Poems in Scots (1990). Crawford is contextualized by observing the poetic influences of Robert Burns, John Davidson, and Hugh MacDiarmid, as well as the philosophical influence of George Elder Davie’s The Democratic Intellect. This paper argues that, in response to the Two Cultures hypothesis put forth by C. P. Snow and the widely-held belief that Scotland is irrevocably fractured, the shifting boundaries of the many disparate Scottish cultures are mediated by …

Liu Yuxi In The Paradox Of The Sign, Kyle David Anderson, Dr. Steven P. Sondrup

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Western perspectives on Chinese literature and poetics have generally been overly mystified (or even nonexistent). This fledgling view of the knowledge and literary achievements of China is to be anticipated during the beginnings of a cultural exchange between the East and the West.

Fire In The Pasture: Twenty-First Century Mormon Poets, Angela Hallstrom, Tyler Chadwick Oct 2013

Fire In The Pasture: Twenty-First Century Mormon Poets, Angela Hallstrom, Tyler Chadwick

BYU Studies

In the foreword to the poetry anthology Fire in the Pasture, poet and BYU English professor Susan Elizabeth Howe explains that a poet's desire is "to make readers see what they did not see before, to offer insight, to create empathy, to provoke thought, or to express beauty, soundness, depth." Editor Tyler Chadwick, a poet and doctoral candidate in English at Idaho State University, has gathered into one substantial volume the work of eighty-two contemporary Mormon poets, and the majority succeed in conjuring the emotional, spiritual, and aesthetic rewards Howe describes.

This anthology is the first major collection of poetry …

Bilingual Quotations In Renaissance Poetry And The Relations Of Romance Languages, Treb Hw Winegar, Dr. Christopher Lund Sep 2013

Bilingual Quotations In Renaissance Poetry And The Relations Of Romance Languages, Treb Hw Winegar, Dr. Christopher Lund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The study of bilingual quotations, made possible by this grant, has led me into a number of fascinating, related sidetracks which have been very little studied, especially since the waning of the French school of literature compareè. I have taken the time to study some of these sidetracks since they are relevant to the phenomenon I proposed to study. Others I have been able only to marvel at and reserve for future study.

The Foreign Ear: Elizabeth Bishop's Proliferal Wit & The Chances Of Change, Kelly Barrett Brown Sep 2013

The Foreign Ear: Elizabeth Bishop's Proliferal Wit & The Chances Of Change, Kelly Barrett Brown

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Abstract

The Foreign Ear: Elizabeth Bishop's Proliferal Wit & the Chances of Change

Elizabeth Bishop has been widely celebrated as a painterly or photographic poet, a naturalist and geographer, and yet she was a subtly exquisite musician of wordplay attuned to subvocal effects. This dissertation examines a network of Bishop's affinities and aesthetic commitments, including her wish to "say the most difficult things" and "be funny, if possible." One surprising claim regarding the poet's variously called "All Eye," "the famous eye," etc., is that her sense of the spiritual is rather antithetical to an ocular regime: even those extremely fluid, …

The Language of Trees is a poetry collection based on a series of walks, and rooted in the experience of place on a small island off the west coast of Canada. Prose poems and a serial poem that gives the collection its title, reflect the poet's leanings towards experiment. The preface discusses poetics and the poet's technical approach to form.

[No Titles In Utopia], Esteban J. Rodriguez May 2013

[No Titles In Utopia], Esteban J. Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The intended purpose of this thesis it to compose a collection of poetry consisting of four sections with each section containing between four to ten poems. The poems themselves will range between one to three pages and will be divided according to their particular subject matter, such as, but not limited, to childhood reflection, father-son relationships, the estrangement from suburbia and modernized America, and ekphrasis-inspired pieces that weave both art and narrative elements together. My main goal with this collection is to write poems in a clear straightforward manner without obscuring language, and constructing persona narratives that invite the reader …

Strange Little Vehicles, Andrew Merecicky May 2013

Strange Little Vehicles, Andrew Merecicky

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

It isn't an exploration in or an experiment regarding. It is a praxis, as a commute is the opposite of an adventure. As le chat regarde le poisson. As when one looks at anything, it becomes strange. That is, a thing (a thought, a feeling, Gertrude Stein's "piece of coffee") once considered becomes little and different. It is the world that is large and alike. It is ultimately the similarity, the recognition of which we, who feel small and unique in the grand scheme, find terrifying. Language is always, as Lyn Hejinian wrote, social; it is a vehicle.

As I …
